« on: March 04, 2015, 04:58:04 am »
I'm trying to run qpdfview-0_4_14-GA, but when I open a pdf, I get a message box saying

could not load plug-in for type 'PDF'

I think I loaded all the prerequisites. Is there a way to find out why it could not load the plug-in?

Hardware / Re: Any luck with Azarawicz's new NIC driver for RealTek?
« on: February 05, 2015, 03:41:20 pm »
I've been using this driver for years. It's fantastic. Early on, I reported some problem with Virtual PC, but David fixed it. Realtek hardware is pervasive, and to have a reliable driver is extra good.

I do have a network problem that causes NetBIOS to die after a long time (17 days was the shortest run time, 3 months was the longest) with a related MultiMac driver, the e1000e. I have not had the patience to chase down a reliable recipe to reproduce this bug.

I don't know why you had to chase this driver down. It's a standard Arca Noae product.

The 3c905B hardware and driver are the only really reliable NetBIOS hardware that I know.

OK, I have this working and have updated the front page of the thread.

I copied 2 GB of files to Dropbox, and NetDrive crashed half a dozen times.

Networking / Dropbox plugin for NetDrive
« on: January 28, 2015, 06:10:12 am »
I asked for help to use the dropbox plugin for NetDrive, but no one on OS/2 World was able to help.

I downloaded the RPM file and the readme from the BitWise Dropbox folder. (The password is bww)

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9nnktlb5z3iihbb/AAAbSkkvXHHPU7wSVbk2JxUea?dl=0

It turns out that you can install an RPM file directly using yum

yum install ndpdbox-0.4.0.b5-0.oc00.i386.rpm

The yum installer will hang. That's OK, just reboot the computer.

After the computer is rebooted, find the NdpDBox folder and the icon for "Dropbox Authorize".
Run Dropbox Authorize (\USR\SHARE\DOC\NDPDBOX-0.4.0.B5\DROPBOXAUTH.EXE) and log in to your dropbox account.
Go back to the Dropbox Authorize screen and save your secret file.

Go to NetDrive and create a resource for dbox. Enter the full path to the secret file you created, your userid, and registration key.

This should create the share and you should now see your dropbox files.

I hope this helps others use the dbox plugin.

The installer does not mark DLLs to load high. I unzipped highmem.exe to do the deed. In the program directory I used

Code: [Select]
highmem -b *.DLL
to mark both code and data high. When I exit from OpenOffice, the computer sometimes the mouse stops moving and the computer is unresponsive to remote control. Is there a safer way to use high memory? Is there a way to revert after marking high or mark "low"?

Off Topic discussions / Re: Ain't much left of my reputation...
« on: January 18, 2015, 09:04:12 pm »
I think your estimate is low by 100 x. It's not just Microsoft, but other companies that no longer exist, but hold the rights. Read "Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?" for the whole story of why IBM did what they did.

It would be cheaper to write it again from scratch.

Patching what's left seems like the best strategy. Thanks to all the developers who are busy doing that.

I'm also thinking about SNAP, where Mensys has the source code, but no one has stepped forward to update it. If we can't use the source to recompile one video driver, then why would the source code to the whole operating system help?

Applications / Re: OpenOffice 4.1.1 GA - pre-requisite uninstall?
« on: January 10, 2015, 12:57:00 am »
I installed from the WPI, with YUM getting all the required libraries.

AOO 4.1 is running fine.

In order to get WPS integration, I uninstalled only the OOoWPS and OOsWPSWizard using WarpIN, then let the AOO 4.1 WPI reinstall those parts. My WPS appears to be integrated correctly.

I still have not figured out the Java integration.

This is what happens when I try to rip the DVD with DVDDAO. The resulting file is 200 MB rather than 8 GB.

The DVD is a cheap, new SATA unit. RSJ doesn't work with it (or pretty much any other SATA drive), but CDRTools2 and DVDDAO work just fine. I can navigate to all the files on the DVD. Oddly, if I try to copy a file from the DVD, it doesn't work.

Code: [Select]
[d:\temp]copy s:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_7.VOB
S:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_7.VOB => D:\temp\VTS_01_7.VOB
SYS0030: The system cannot read from the specified device. "D:\temp\VTS_01_7.VOB

I've tried VLC and SMPlayer, but most DVDs will not play. Is it some kind of encoding problem?

It almost looks like it is scanning from track to track, but no output.

An old DVD from when DVD were a new thing plays just fine on either program.

Google Docs provides a pretty nice way to edit documents. Their native format appears to be PDF. Thanks to having a decent Firefox port, this works pretty well on eComStation.

Google Docs is oriented toward the cloud, but can operate on documents stored locally on the hard drive. If documents are stored on the cloud, then this is a reasonable way to share the document between your eCS machine and your phone/tablet. At least with iPad, Google docs can also open docs on the eCS SAMBA shares, if you have SAMBA server running.
