Networking / Re: Copying SAMBA users and groups
« on: February 20, 2017, 06:47:18 pm »
Thanks Paul and Herwig. I looked at b4smb.cmd, and it lacks the groups file, and backs up a few files that look extraneous, like *.pid. It looks like a great start for a backup/restore script.

I can see the backups on my system. I had not known they were there.

If I have a SAMBA server, and I want to migrate to new hardware, how can I transfer my users and groups from the old server to the new one?

more components were packed as .rpm packages

I hope not!  OS/2 is not a Unix/Linux system and should never be.

This seems to be Arca Noae's position. More .rpm, a few things that aren't .rpm will become so. For people on other branches, like eCS, MPC or Warp 4, .rpm capability will be an important option.

Try transferring some files. The weak point could be the speed test program.

For those of you who are concerned about the future of device driver support, please view the Warpstock videos on the topic. These videos answer pretty much every future device support question in this thread.

I don't want to speak for AN, but I see the purpose of the release of ArcaOS is not bring support for these new devices, but to bring together the current level of support to allow more people to install the OS, and also to purchase legal copies of the OS.

The release of ArcaOS is actually taking time away from the same developers who work on new device support. After the release, I'm hoping for some good progress to be made.

And for those pioneering types who want to press the limits of what can be installed, the ArcaOS installation DVD is going to be a nice resource.

Maybe someone will answer your questions. I signed an agreement with Arca Noae that says I won't disclose the details of what I'm testing.

Since you already know everyone who is working on the project, and what they are doing, I think you can pretty much guess what will be in the 5.0 release.

Are they going to test it AMD processor servers?  I do hope that AMD multi core processors get as much beta testing as Intel ones.

What is wrong with AMD processors?

Networking / Re: Secure telnet to AS400
« on: February 06, 2017, 01:45:35 am »
Thanks, I have the last rollup of Personal Communications. TN5250 has a secure setting in the communications That offers SSL. AS400 docs call this telnet, and don't admit to the plain kind of telnet most of us are familiar with. I'll bet they are both actually subsets of the telnet standard.

These are the instructions I found, so I know I'm on more or less the right track.

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzaiw/rzaiwscenariossl.htm

I wonder how secure SSL from nearly 20 years ago would be?

Here are some screen shots of communications setup:

OS/2 provides secure telnet to AS400, but setting it up is a little hard. I'm finding directions for the i-Series, but some of the rest isn't obvious. Like a lot of things in the era, Java 1.1 seems to be a requirement.

\IBMGSK40 is required, too. (Ever wondered what it was for?)

Mensys has moved a critical file from \IBMGSK40 to \ecs\bin\GSK4IKM.CMD, so that needs to be moved back.

Has anyone done it? I'm not really familiar with AS400.

Storage / Re: Someone has seen this before os2.ini
« on: February 02, 2017, 03:42:54 pm »
Since no one has used a boot volume that size (although I use 20 GB a lot), maybe it's too big. Try reducing free space a little bit. It would be interesting to know if there is some limit.

This really ought to work, because OS/2 was actually supported in the days of 64 GB max partition size.

I'm fine with it too. I upload occasionally. I don't think there are that many legitimate uploaders.

Apparently, I had not instantiated an extended system tray. Once I did, I can see the ClamAV GUI object in it.

Thanks!

Applications / ClamAV GUI
« on: January 18, 2017, 02:35:02 am »
I'm trying out the new ClamAV GUI from Netlabs.

Port of ClamAV-GUI by Joerg Zopes, release 0.4.1 for OS/2.

ClamAV-GUI is a Front-End for Clamav AntiVirus written in C++
using the QT4 Toolkit.

I installed ClamAV using RPM/YUM and got it working by editing my clamd.conf and freshclam.conf files.

When I start ClamAV GUI, a splash screen shows and then the program hibernates invisibly. Any idea how to troubleshoot?

"...Firefox can't find the file at /G://APPS//TCPIP//PMMAIL//PMMAIL//TEMP//TEMP.HTM..."

Actually, that is a bug in PMMail, that never showed up until FF 38.8.0 arrived (apparently, the command line parsing has changed in Firefox). PMMail 3.22 (and later) has a fix for it. If you still use older PMMail versions, you probably need to make an intermediate program to change the double slashes to single slashes (of the appropriate type), before passing the command to Firefox.

This is true, and helpful. However, the original poster was using PMMail/2 version 2.00.1500. While I recommend the latest version of PMMail, it's really hard for me to criticize people for keeping old software when I'm running OS/2.
