Events / Warpstock 2015 presentations
« on: July 04, 2015, 05:08:52 pm »
For people interested in attending/viewing Warpstock 2015, I'm soliciting presentation topics

Here are some of my ideas -- please add your own.

  • DLL heck: how to resolve conflicts along the LIBPATH, ecspecially with RPM/YUM
    vs. other installers.
  • OS/2 loader and the 512 MB problem. QSINIT and RAM Drives.
  • Config.sys: Reviewing the order of execution of statements in Config.sys and
the proper order of loading drivers.

Applications / SmartSuite can't find default.mwp
« on: June 29, 2015, 03:30:06 pm »
This is with SmartSuite and all the fixes I can find applied. Most installations seem to run fine. One computer gives this error message:

Quote
Cannot open SmartMaster default.mwp. Please select another SmartMaster.

Default.mwp seems to be where it always is. (\LotusW4\SMASTERS\WORDPRO\default.mwp)

Attachments:
1. opening a Word Pro file.
2. instead of opening, Word Pro preferences opens.
3. Then this error appears.

How can I repair this?

Hardware / Re: Unexeptable priner speed.
« on: June 23, 2015, 06:28:27 am »
How does that software emulation work on OS/2? The printer (I have one, too, but a 4090) seems to have PS on board. Also here, it prints at a similar speed to Mac (don't have Windows handy).

What I found is that PostScript support on OS/2 is kind of messed up. There are three PS drivers for the 4090, IBM, eCups and PSPRINT. All seem to work, but with minor differences.

General Discussion / Re: OS4 kernel and associated files
« on: May 30, 2015, 09:08:19 pm »
Thanks, OS4User. I will go that route when I get a chance. As I work with QSINIT to find the rest of my RAM, I'm seeing a conflict with the Arca Noae release of MultiMac (R8169.ADD). This may affect the OS4 loader as well. If I revert to MultiMac from eCS 2.2 b2, QSINIT works well to show the full RAM of the system.

Thanks, Doug. I tried QS_INIT, and it seems to fix the memory hole. I'm seeing 3492 MB now. If I change BIOS settings for video, the available memory goes up or down as expected.

Well, I'd hoped for answers to my questions, but here are the files, in hopes for answers later.

I'm not using any com port, so there won't be a log.
I've attached the config.sys.
os2loader.ini is unchanged from the distribution.

This memory hole problem is unexpected. I thought I had this same hardware working without a memory hole. Perhaps it can be eliminated in BIOS.

I have a new system that is limited to 512 MB RAM.
I'm trying out the OS/4 loader and kernel in order to see close to the installed 4 GB.

The OS/4 loader is working fine to load OS/2 loader.
It works with updated DOSCALL1.DLL
But it still reports 512 MB RAM.

I cannot load the OS/2 kernel, even with Alt-F7 to suppress the LOGO.
The machine simply resets.

I cannot load the OS/4 kernel.
Loading: acpi4.sys. File not found or corrupted.

Where can I get acpi4.sys?
Do I even need the OS/4 kernel just to see 4 GB RAM?

Removing pluginreg.dat brings back the Flash plugin. Thanks!

Sure it does. No plugins are recognized.

I have Flash 11 installed.
1. create new profile
2. flash 11 works. Plug in is recognized and I can switch it on and off.
3. surf around a while
4. flash doesn't work. No plugins are recognized
5. restart Firefox/system. No change.

Applications / Firefox plugins stop working
« on: May 09, 2015, 03:25:29 pm »
I'm using Nightly (Firefox 24 compiled by Dave Yeo). I used it for a while, then my plugins disappeared. Even though all the files are still there in the plugin directory, Firefox no longer uses them.

I created a new profile, and the plugins are back. So I used that profile for a while (moving all my bookmarks and passwords to the new profile), but in a few days, my plugins are gone again. I made yet another profile, and they are back.

Any idea what is going on? Is there a way to restore plugin capability to a profile?

What version of SmartGIT do you use, and where did you get the old version?

Setup & Installation / Re: What's your WPS setup ?
« on: April 19, 2015, 03:56:34 pm »
I developed Suntan Special for this purpose. When I build systems, either for sale or for my own use, I do a minimal install of eCS or OS/2, then zip it up. Then I run Suntan Special. It makes all the changes I've become accustomed to over the years in a single automated run (which can take a couple of hours, what with reboots and everything).

While my business selling Suntan Special and eCS preloaded systems has slowed in recent years, the industrial and commercial use has not. Setting up for an industrial application is different (hide everything on the desktop, or else run without a keyboard, mouse or monitor). I haven't done a new release of Suntan Special in a while, but it's useful enough to me that it's still getting updates.

Setup & Installation / Re: QPdfView install problem
« on: April 09, 2015, 02:13:27 am »
There is likely a LIBPATH problem. That is, an earlier version of one of the DLL files that is a prerequisite that is loading instead of the one you installed. There is a command line utility, which, that locates where a DLL is being loaded from

which -d foo.dll

shows which DLL file will be loaded.

There is also a nice program for testing if whole chains of DLL files can be loaded. That is PM DLL Lister (pmdll in Suntan Special). That can also be good for finding the older DLL that is being loaded.

The hotel looks like it's in downtown Wichita, which gives good possibilities for food and entertainment within easy walking distance. We try to make these events useful to those flying in without the need for renting a car.

If you bring a computer that you'd like to see eCS installation / configuration attempted, we usually have some time for trying things.

I'm still arranging presenters. If you're planning to come to Wichita, let me know what presentations you'd like to see.

Multimedia / Re: Media Servers for OS/2 ?
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:29:56 pm »
I currently use SAMBA server and/or FTPserver to transport media files to the iPad. Mediatomb sounds like a good thing, particularly if running under Java 6.
