Setup & Installation / Re: Is eComStation DEAD?
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:32:31 am »
I don't think it's dead. The new ACPI and driver fixes in eCS 2.2 beta 2 allow easy installation on machines that were out of reach a year ago. This beta is only a few weeks old, and there are a few large pieces to add before the next beta.

Not many people work on eCS business, so they likely have to choose between talking about working, and actually working. I expect we'll find out soon enough how things will go with eCS.

Storage / Re: Using a 1 TB USB hard drive
« on: January 30, 2014, 05:41:54 pm »
Pete's instructions didn't work. DFSee still sees the drive as a 500 GB. Ian's instructions did work.

The OS2DASD.DMD /D:0 /BOOTABLE /D:1 /FULLSIZE allowed DFSee to change the geometry. Even after changing, DFSee had the wrong volume size. So I ejected and reinserted the drive. Now DFSee had the right size. I created a partition.

I then went to LVM, and deleted the partition, which was a big floppy as Pete had noted.
I created a single primary and saved. Then I formatted JFS. I ejected the drive (but that failed -- after saying it was safe to eject, it said I had not ejected. I then did a chkdsk and the drive appears to be OK.

I then moved the drive to another eCS system that does not have the OS2DASD.DMD line that provides for the fullsize, and it recognized the whole drive.

Thanks everyone, and I hope you can see how to combine Pete's, Ian's and my posts into instructions on how to format a 1 TB portable hard drive.

I use a 2TB USB hard drive (Seagate Backup Plus) to store data on... but not to boot from.

I used DFSee to adjust the size of the existing NTFS partition and created a JFS volume with the appropriate settings.

//Jan-Erik

OK, apparently I don't know how to "adjust" the size of the NTFS partition. I remade the NTFS partition using Windows 7, and now eCS can't use it at all. JFS sounds like a good idea. This is a new Toshiba 1 TB drive that is half the physical size of a normal portable drive.

I don't intend to boot this drive. I have little use for a bootable USB drive at this time.

Please give details of what needs to happen to the NTFS partition so eCS will recognize it.

Thanks!

I'm looking at using a 1 TB USB portable hard drive. But eCS sees it as a 500 GB drive. What do I need to do to see the full 1 TB?

Programming / Closed source parts of eComStation
« on: December 27, 2013, 07:20:12 pm »
I'm wondering how much work there is left to leave the IBM parts of eComStation behind and going to an unencumbered product?

OS/2 Kernel
MPTS
MMOS2
Presentation Manager
WorkPlace Shell
GRADD Graphics subsystem

I'm sure I forgot a few, and there are lots of little bits that haven't ever been replaced (look inside the OS2 directory tree, but those are the big subsystems.

File and Print is largely replaced by SAMBA and CUPS.

Marketplace / Re: OS/2, software and books on eBay

I agree with most of what Eugene is saying.  eBay has nice store features, and I'm not using them. Can the OS/2 market support an eBay store with enough business to make it worth it?

This is just a list of the OS/2 museum excess items on eBay.

If buyers do not step forward, I will eventually recycle the items.

I know this is an old post, but the URL is still good, and I'm still selling off a bunch of OS/2 items not needed by the OS/2 Museum.

In particular, there is the OS/2 Technical Compendium, which is an excellent 5-book summary of the OS/2 Application Programming Interface.

Setup & Installation / Re: ecs2.2 beta refresh
« on: December 16, 2013, 03:41:18 pm »
The beta fixes my installation on Lenovo Thinkpad X60, which has normal issues of an aging laptop. Before eWPS would crash, both during installation and during normal boot. I'm guessing the problem was the battery widget, which still gives wrong information, but no longer crashes.

I'm interested in the posts on newer laptops. It appears that Thinkpads in the xy10 series work, but in the xy30 have the memory hole. I have gotten my W500 WiFi to work, but I'm interested in how that would be on a newer laptop. I would like to see a reasonable function on a laptop currently for sale. The xy40 series is current.

Setup & Installation / eCS demo CD beta 5
« on: December 06, 2013, 07:26:16 pm »
Posting this from eCS Demo CD

running on Thinkpad W500.

I tried to boot on VGA, but got no display. I switched the display to the LCD and then when I booted I got a display.

USB support works for my thumb drive.

Thanks Roderick and everyone for all the work you did.

Utilities / Re: Update eCS beta ISO

Thks, but I don't have any floppy drive.

I do have a USB floppy drive, and I'm able to test the latest drivers with the current beta. I guess you'd have to weigh the advantage of testing now vs. the cost of a USB floppy drive.

I'm using GenMac update v0.2.0 network driver. These are hacks done after development of GenMac ended. Thanks to Andy Willis for working out the details of Intel 5100 and to Doug Bissett for collecting and distributing the fixes.

I took the W500 with new XWLAN software to the public library. The first time, the system would not get WiFi. In fact the system froze. But I rebooted, and it worked fine. I'm attaching a screen capture of "Scan for Hotspots", showing 32 access points in the main reading room.

Web applications / Jetty
« on: November 18, 2013, 04:45:05 am »
The news announces that Jetty 9 is out, and runs on Java 6.

This isn't the case. Jetty 9 requires Java 7, because it implements the Servlet 3.1 API.

OS/2 and eComStation users have OpenJDK 6, so we can run up to Jetty 8.

When I got the W500, it had an Intel 5300. I took that out, and replaced it with a 5100 that I bought on eBay.

When doing this, there are three antennae on the 5300, but only two on the 5100. I puzzled over that for an hour. Does it matter which lines are attached? I now wish I'd photographed the card after installation.
