Off Topic discussions / Re: Thinkpad Yoga S1 12 weird *A* key

I kind of miss those old IBM keyboards you could wash in the top rack of the dishwasher.

I agree that replacing the keyboard is the way to go. Lenovo hardware maintenance manuals make it pretty easy if a bit tedious.

Applications / Lotus 123 DOS version
« on: July 21, 2020, 02:56:00 am »
Does anyone run this? I know it does NOT run on a recent machine running ArcaOS, but how old does the machine have to be before Lotus 123 DOS will run?

This issue is DOS support. I know there is a project at Arca Noae for refreshed DOS support, but it isn't ready today.

Hardware / Re: Thinkpad X250 for ArcaOS?

The travel routers work better than the OS/2 XWLAN software. We have QT4 WPA_SUPPLICANT, but I think the travel router is better than that, too. But travel routers are not perfect. Some WiFi sources are hard to use.

I don't like having to carry an extra small thing and two wires to connect it to the laptop.

There are two problems with newer laptop hard drives. Some are GPT, and you have to change the AHCI to use /!U in your own menu to see them at all, and then all you can do is wipe.

The other problem is there is no support at all for NVMe "hard drives".

I posted an X250 on another thread yesterday. I am an ArcaOS reseller, and I maintain web pages for machines that I sell with ArcaOS pre-loaded. You can visit those web pages and decide if the X250 is what you want. There are directions for installing ArcaOS if you want to do it yourself.

If you have been paying attention, you already know that the built-in WiFi will not work with OS/2. The adapters that work are based on Windows 2000 drivers, so you need a pretty old WiFi card for internal WiFi to work.

I looked in my list of old OS/2 drivers. It looks like I was using a 3cxe589et PCCard network interface. I used it for a second interface while using a Thinkpad T21 and Injoy Firewall. It ought to work.

Arca Noae doesn't list support for the network.

https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/multimac/

I think BSD doesn't have this network driver either, so that doesn't look promising.

It was a long time ago, but I think the 3com PCMCIA had OS/2 drivers. I'm sorry I can't remember the model number.

Use RPM/YUM to install the toolkit. Or download from a Warez site.

I seem to recall that was the case, but I haven't tried since eSXi was a beta. VMWare support is really good at OS/2.

Arca Noae will fix all of the bugs I noted in due time. I need to supply them with appropriate bug information. Note that they aren't even accepting bug reports on the preview release unless it's on ArcaOS 5.0.5.

Note that USB does work on every machine I offer.

I haven't seen any demand for an AMD system from Blonde Guy thus far. I don't have anything against AMD.

I am an Arca Noae reseller, and I have a few computers available for sale. This is one of them. I thought I'd report on the behavior of the ArcaOS 5.0.5 installation and USB 3.0. My computer web pages can also be used as a guide to install ArcaOS yourself.

Manufacturer: Lenovo
Model: ThinkCentre M900
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz
USB 3.0 controllers: 1
USB 2.0 controllers: 0

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 is installed. Mouse and keyboard work, even with KVM. Support for Mass Storage sometimes is working, but generally not satisfactory. Bug report not yet submitted. Update (July 24: I tested again with a 2 TB external USB hard drive, and it is working pretty well. USB sticks are less certain to work)

This is a tower computer with optional PS/2 and Parallel ports. ArcaOS installs easily from DVD. Audio is working on Adapter 0.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices including USB 3.0 sticks.

The OS/2 API and the Win32 API are very similar as of 1999. After the Windows 2000 beta things really started to diverge. So the best document I can think of to use is 1999 MSDN. They printed 1000's of sets; I'm sure there are some still around.

The advantage of this over newer docs is that in 1999, Win32 contained little that wasn't in OS/2.

I have not seen a table comparing the API. There must have been one in the ODIN project.

The OS/2 API as described in the redbooks is better documented than Win32 in the MSDN. So the IBM OS/2 docs were actually useful to program Win32. Now you can just type a Windows API function name into google and get the documentation page.

Screen: 12.5 inch Color LCD, 1366 x 768 pixels

USB 2.0 controllers: 1

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 is installed. With the USB 3.0 Enabled setting in BIOS on Auto, mouse and keyboard sometimes work, even with KVM. Support for Mass Storage similarly sometimes is working. With USB 3.0 disabled in BIOS, USB 2.0 support is working with Mass Storage. Mouse, keyboard and KVM work sometimes.

Normal operation of the laptop does not require USB. The built-in mouse and keyboard are not USB.

This is a small laptop. There is no support for the built-in WiFi. I use a travel router connected to the Ethernet port. To me, the travel router has more and better capability than XWLAN. The router uses GL.inet software controlled by a web interface that runs just fine in Firefox.

The WPA_SUPPLICANT is part of XWLAN. And your card won't do WPA, so it won't work under Linux or Windows, either. I don't remember any PCCard with OS/2 drivers that will do WPA.

Maybe use a travel router with the built in ethernet?

Audio, Video, DVD-RW all work well. Brubopeep also has optional PS/2 ports, Parallel port and PATA (IDE ATAPI) support available.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices. USB 2.0 Mass storage device work with USBXHCD.SYS disabled.
