Programming / Re: Setting up a NewView development environment

Thank you for your responses.

The project files contain relative path specifications, which are correct. I have temporarily changed them to absolute paths, but without success.

I will try to contact Alex and will report here if there are any news.

Programming / Setting up a NewView development environment
« on: August 13, 2025, 07:38:01 am »
I am currently setting up a development environment for NewView. Sibyl with FP3 is installed. I downloaded the NewView source code and copied it into E:\Projects\Sibyl\NewView. So far so good.

I adjusted the env.inc file for the folders. Running project-setup.cmd failed with an error. Inserting a semicolon on line 112 seems to help:

Call Lineout 'STDERR:', Right( sigl, 6 ) '+++', STRIP( SOURCELINE( sigl ))

After that the project files for Sibyl are created. Next I run the makeall.cmd script in the \NewView\Sibyl folder. There I hit the same error as before and made the corresponding adjustment in the script. Now the resources are build.
Unfortunately compilation fails with this error:

Sibyl compiler version 2.5 Compiling: E:\PROJECTS\SIBYL\NEWVIEW\SIBYL\MAKEALL.PAS Compiling: SYSTEM.PAS Fatal Error at [0,0] in SYSTEM.PAS "Syntax error (INTERFACE expected)"

Invoking the project directly in the Sibyl IDE reports that System.pas cannot be found. The paths are correct and System.pas is in its place. Does anyone have an idea where the problem might be?

Thankful for any help,
Michael

Programming / Re: Powerbasic for OS/2

As far as I know, version 1.5 was the last version of VisualAge for Basic. Unfortunately, the update is nowhere to be found.

Version 1.1 is unfortunately extremely unstable, especially when trying to use the language's object-oriented features.

Speedsoft Sibyl might be a good alternative. It's easier to learn than C++ and more powerful than Basic.

Setup & Installation / Re: BonusPak installation, fail.

I also had problems with this approach. I installed a Warp 4 in a virtual machine with IBM Works. I then took over the finished installation to ArcaOS. Perhaps someone can help out with an existing installation and copy it to you.

Everything that is necessary is the complete IBM Works installation directory and the following files from the \OS2\DLL folder:
fpwrec.dll, fpwwpps.dll, ien30pde.dll, ien30pwr.dll

With the Rexx-Script "Ibmwdesk.cmd" included in IBM Works, the program folder on the WPS is generated and the necessary additions to the config.sys are made.

Note: The instructions refer to the German version of IBM Works. It may be that the files in the OS2\DLL folder may have other names.

I was thinking more along the lines of a lean Linux or BSD. And while I'm dreaming, I wanted it to run as a 64-bit system in the virtual environment and be able to use memory above the 4GB limit.

All of this is purely theoretical, of course, and without knowing whether it would even be technically possible.

7
What might be a better option would be a kind of XP Mode, like in Windows 7. A lean and fast virtual environment for running a modern browser. And as if that weren't dreamy enough, perhaps even seamless on the WPS.

Events / Re: Warpstock 2024: Coming? Not Coming? Why?
« on: September 12, 2024, 08:38:23 am »
Hello Lewis,

First of all, I would like to praise you for your commitment. We are all aware of the situation of trying to achieve something with the few developers. Therefore, you also deserve my greatest respect.

The reasons why I don't come to WarpStock are varied. Partly professional and partly private. But that has nothing to do with the event itself or the prices or anything else related to it.

Nevertheless, I have to agree with Sigurd. The most modern bootable system is of no use if you don't have the latest software for OS/2. OpenOffice may still do its job, but it is already outdated, and not just under OS/2. And the browser is now the most important application in the private environment and in the office. We're welcome to open a new thread. Everything stands or falls in this segment.

Apart from that. A careless Linux port also does not take advantage of the advantages of WPS or other OS/2-specific technologies. The technologies for which we all appreciate and love OS/2.

The situation is what it is. I think it's a huge shame. ArcaOS runs extremely well and reliably on my ThinkPad. If it weren't for the browser situation, I wouldn't even dream of looking for an alternative system. But a point has now been reached where daily work can hardly be completed.

So all that remains is to wait and see whether a solution might be found. Of course, Arca Noae's job is not to develop a browser. But you are our contacts and it is “your” operating system. If you can't find a solution to this, who will?

Graphics and Window Design / Re: Bigicons
« on: December 21, 2023, 10:22:57 pm »
Hello Martin,

most icons are packed in DLL files. These can be extracted with Martin Lafaix's Resource Decompiler, for example. I quickly tried the pmwp.dll and the pmviop.dll. The result is in the ZIP file.

I am still looking for more images as soon as there is some time for it.

@Dave
I didn't even think of that. Thanks for the tip.
But after a first short test, not much has changed, except for a few additional objects on the desktop. Unfortunately, the colors were not taken over. Styler is of course deactivated.
So these are then adapted via the scheme palette.

12
I think it's less about functions than an overall fresher look. However, it is likely to be difficult without the source code.

I have been using OS/2 for exactly 30 years now. During the Christmas holidays I will take a closer look at adapting Arcaos to the look and feel from OS/2 2.1. It would also be nice to have a high-resolution icon set, corresponding adaptation of the color (probably the simplest part) and maybe a few smaller patches of the Pmmerge.dll.
Let's see what is feasible ...

Ok, thank you for the information. I was subscribed to the IBM OS/2 and DOS ServicePac CDs at the time. Only the full version of version 1.1 was included here. Unfortunately, a 1.5 or a patch could not be found. At least not until mid 98, after which I canceled the subscription.

Hi Martin,

as far as I know, there were only full versions of VABasic.

Unfortunately, what I can't find anywhere is VisualAge for Basic Version 1.5.
SoftMaker's DataMaker for OS/2 would also be interesting software. As would the project management software OPUS 2.0 or MGI PhotoSuite.

@Martin: Is there a way to get VisualAge for Basic for OS/2 free use permission from IBM? I think it's still a very viable solution for developing small programs quickly.
