Mail-News / Re: PMMail and filters - this one is not working...why?

Search for ".-z" in Help, for me it comes up under the "ICSL Help" section.

So it does, Odd that I can't search for "-z" and find it. The docs say "-z", not ".-z" (could that be the problem?). This would seem to be some sort of a problem, that needs to be investigated. I will create a problem report. It could be the way that it is coded in the help file, or it could be a problem with searching in the help program.

I am now using this functionality and it seems to be picking up the SPAM fairly well!

Many years ago, I learned that BogoFilter is a very good way to filter SPAM. I still use it, but I am pretty sure that my ISP has a pretty good SPAM filter too, so I never see SPAM any more. That concerns me in two ways. One is that I don't know if the ISP is filtering out good messages, and two, I can't test that Bogofilter is still working.

One tip: Try to train equal amounts of good messages, and bad ones. If you get it unbalanced, it doesn't work as well.

Oh yeah, its out there, just sort of burried inside the Help screens. This is supposed to provide wildcard match where the "xyz" occurs at the end of the string (that's the meaning behind "-z" option), so in effect you would be picking up stuff like "bad_player@spamer.xyz".

I don't find it. What version of PMMail are you using? Way back, after VOICE got the code, it was discovered that a number of those things actually didn't do what they were supposed to do. That was fixed, but not necessarily according to what was happening, or what was described, in the previous versions of PMMail.

I would also suggest that this sort of SPAM filtering is very much better handled by the PMMail SPAM filter (BogoFilter), than by trying to manually build the type of filters that you are attempting to use. The SPAM filter does require some initial training (good, and bad), but once it is trained it will do a great job, and is easy to use. On going training will be required, but it is a lot easier than trying to figure out complex filters..

So to deal with this I figured that I'd just "beef up" my existing filters by adding the following;

Code: [Select]
(h.fromid.-z = "click" | h.fromid.-z = "xyz")

...alas, this does NOT work, and I cannot figure out why???

Okay, it has been a LONG time since I tried complex filters, it is much easier to do as Matt suggests.

However:

I don't see "-z" documented. Do you mean something else?

I would expect that "h.fromid." should be "h.fromid" (without the trailing dot).

If that doesn't help, I suggest going to the PMMail user mail list, and ask where PMMail users hang out. You can subscribe (or unsubscribe) here: http://www.os2voice.org/mailinglists.html if needed.

Are you saying the SB16PNP should have worked? If so I must have missed something ?

Possibly. You initially said you were using VLC. That thing is a bit of a challenge to install, because of the way it is packaged. I prefer PM123, which is easy to install https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/sound/players/PM123_1-42.exe

I am listening to MP3 files, from VBox in win 10, using the SB16PNP device for ArcaOS, and PM123, as I type. Sound is not very good, because the speakers in the laptop are not very good. Plug in better speakers, and it sounds much better. Definitely no breakup. Note that I do need to turn up the volume to 100%, or it is not loud enough to hear.

Networking / Re: WIFI on Lenovo W520
« on: June 03, 2022, 06:22:59 pm »
I don't know what the W520 does, but my L530 does not have a manual switch for the radio (which usually only enables/disables, enabling the radio). It does not work, because there is no way to turn on the radio. I can load a driver, using GENMAC, and it acts exactly like a wired NIC, when there is no cable plugged in (think of it as the radio replaces the cable). I can assign an IP address, and ping it, but that is about all that can be done.

In windows, there is an additional driver, that appears to use ACPI to turn on/off the radio. We have no such thing.

If I boot to Linux Mint Cinnamon, the device works, and when I shut down Linux, it does leave the LED on. It remains on after booting to ArcaOS, but it seems that the LED, and the radio enable, are not actually connected, in any way. Again, I don't know if the W520 is the same as the L530.

You may want to review the information at: ftp://genmac@ftp.os2voice.org/ (the pasword is "unsupported", all lower case, and no quotes), if you haven't done so.

VLC 3.0.16 (and older) is chopped and stuttering. MP3's play fine using PM123 , but MP4's & MP3''s are bad using 1 Processsor and get much worse when the number of processors are increased. This is on 2 machines running Linux with 2 virtual installs of 5.0.7 on each one.  I've probably forgotten to do something basic but can't figure out what that might be. I've tried enableing VT-x/AMD-V but no help there. I'm using a Bridged connection but don't think thats a problem, DOOABLE works GREAT!

Thanks in advance for any ideas!    klipp

Use the SoundBlaster PnP for sound in the guest. It uses far less resources, and works a lot better than the alternatives.

Hardware / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI support - GOP?

That's great to read! It seems we're well on the way to phasing out the use of DOSBOX as a stop-gap.

Not entirely. Vefi.sys is only for UEFI machines, so machines that are not installed in UEFI mode cannot use it It is also possible, that something will work with DOSBOX, and not with vefi.sys support. DOS/winOS2 does have a couple of other restrictions, that DOSBOX doesn't have. When the time comes, you will need to try it, to see what happens.

but can you comment on the stability of vefi.sys as opposed to vsvga.sys?

While doing UEFI testing, I have found that vefi.sys works remarkably well. It actually makes it possible to use DOS/winOS2, on a machine where it won't even start in normal BIOS (CSM) mode. That is, of course, because of the replacement for CSM, that Arca Noae has developed. It probably isn't perfect, but it is much better.

This could be a wrong assumption, but if pmmerge had been patched or updated by the ArcoOS team, would not the build level number increase?

It is a wrong assumption. Patches do not change the release information, although it could be done (and is done, in some cases, like the Kernel). The PMMERGE patch was not created by Arca Noae (but it is pssible that they modified the patch).

I will point out, again, that only Arca Noae has permission, from IBM, to distribute patched IBM sourced binaries. Nobody else has that permission (even eCS couldn't do that). Others need to distribute the patches, and let the user do the work to apply them. Patches are often done automatically, by installers, when something is installed.

Setup & Installation / Re: UEFI Boot Manager for 5.1
« on: May 17, 2022, 06:22:15 pm »
Hi

I have a related doubt here. From what I understand on GPT partitioned HDD, AiR-BOOT will no longer work. AiR-BOOT is only for MBR, right? or did I get it wrong?

Regards

You are correct. Air Boot does not work with GPT. It is one of the things that needs to be replaced by a different boot manager.

there's no options related to operating system in bios, as i said, this is a PS/2 and it's supposed to be supported by warp 3.
the only bios option i know about OS/2 is related to ram over 64MB. pre warp 4 need it, warp 4 and above not.
and of course, it's not the problem here, as it's a 386sx bus, maximum is 16MB.

That is the setting that needs to change.

57
Been a long time for me since I have run Warp 3 but I think there is something or somethings you may have to turn off in the Bios. anyone remember?

If I remember correctly, early Warp 3 needed to have a BIOS setting (something about booting OS/2 warp) set on, and later versions (including later Warp 3 fix packs) needed that set off. Try both ways, if you find it.

Please check your incident in Mantis. Apparently there was a discrepancy in your e-mail address, that may have been incorrectly fixed. That can mean that you don't get notified of updates to the incident.

For anybody following this, it looks like one of the data separator characters got changed to a semi-colon, somehow.

Well, first, make a backup, so you don't end up with worse problems. Of course, you could simply restore the file from a backup, if you have one (you do backup, of course).

Realize, that even if it is called ADDR.DB, it is NOT a database file. It is a plain text file. If you look in the Help, you will find a section that describes the data format (Address Book Data Format). Be sure to read the Note at the bottom of the page.

Now that you know the data layout, you should be able to open the file (in the text editor), and you will likely spot where something went wrong.

If you go to http://www.os2voice.org/mailinglists.html you can subscribe to the PMMail/2 User mail list, when PMMail users hang out. That is the best place to get help with PMMail problems. It is pretty low volume.

Good to know that it runs on a singe processor system, but my system is about 16 years old and behind for more modern disks.

16 years is not "old". I test ArcaOS, with a few systems that are older  (including the Dell, which I am using to post this). I wouldn't want to be using any of them as my main machine. I do use one of them as an ArcaOS based NAS box. I got a SATA adapter, and now have a 2 TB SATA disk, for storage, and a SATA SSD for the boot system. It has 1 GB memory, a gigabit NIC, and a single P4 processor. It is a little slow (the bus speed, for the SATA card, is only 1.5 Gbs), but it does the job.
