There was also a defect, now fixed, where the urlgrabber dir was in upper case instead of lower case.

Ah, the joys of using software from a case sensitive operating system on one that is case insensitive.

Isn't there a way to make the ports case insensitive when on OS/2?

Thanks Leo,

I dug up an old Trendnet print server we have and hooked it up to our HP CLJ 3500 printer and for the first time I actually got a response from it from OS/2 - even if it dis just say PCL XL error.  Up to now we have been trying to use the print server in one of our NAS boxes without success - the print server does not wake up the box.

Now all I have to do is find out what the error is all about and if I can fix it.

Hi Leo,  as a matter of interest just how are you printing to a print server and what server are you using?

guzzi, thank you for that information.  I will see if I can download it when I get back to the office.

Out of curiosity where does one get this AOO4.1.1.1 GA?  I tried the dropbox page but it requires a password and for some reason putting bww as the password does not work.

Storage / Re: How long is a HPFS CHKDSK?
« on: February 16, 2015, 02:27:46 pm »
Hi Erich,

The VM container size has nothing to do with the partition size or the number of partitions in it.

I may be old fashioned but we always make a small HPFS boot partition which is then imaged using DFSee to allow a restore should there be problems. A second, or more, JFS partition is used for everything else (because of the work we do we do use more partitions to keep classes of work separated).

Google XR_C006 this is/was a beta fixpak from IBM testcase that works with most versions of Warp 4 and its derivatives.  It will give you LVM and the necessary support files as well as OS2DASD.DMD that is necessary for large partitions.

You might also consider using UPDCD to create an updated CD that includes all the fixes and other updates that you can then use to build your OS/2 VM without all the problems of updating a bit at a time.

Eirik,

The host system only looks after the virtual disk container file NOT the disks contained within that file.

If the partition within the VM becomes corrupted then the OS of that VM must be used to do the chkdsk.  In the case in question it could well be a constrained memory issue with such a large partition which could lead to a format and re-install with a better partition layout.

The last time I did a chkdsk on a 20GB HPFS partition it took about 90 seconds.

May I ask why you want such a large HPFS partition in the first place?  Our standard partitioning on all our OS/2 machines and VMs is to have a 1GB HPFS boot partition and then several JFS partitions for such things as programs, data and storage.  On our test machine we have several 500GB JFS partitions created using the IBM JFS that appeared in one of the later fixpacks and with WSeB.

I just started up the test machine - it has auto chkdsk on all partitions - and it took 22 seconds from power on to full desktop (it has three 1TB disks and one 500GB disk - boot partition is 2GB HPFS the other six partitions are JFS).

Setup & Installation / Re: Completing Warp 4.5 install

Replace the gradd97 with the free SNAP video (SNAP-os2-3.1.8.exe , the free reg code should be available from the same place)

To do anything I think you will find that you will be missing a lot of DLLs (we have a collection of nearly 90 that are needed and are extra to the base install.

If you want to run any java applications you will most probably need openjava 1.6 and I would add Xworkplace to your list.

Hi Dariusz,

OK, what you have should work so it looks as if there is a problem with the software.

As an aside, we have no problems using PMView to list and display the thumbnails in the open dialog as a directory with 3803 pictures and likewise on my home setup I can access my photos directory that has well over 90,000 photos in it.

Networking / Re: Any benefit to running dual/quad port NIC?
« on: February 10, 2015, 11:24:48 pm »
Olafur,  with most small NAS boxes the second ethernet port is only usable as a failover and then only if the managed switch will allow it.

Dariusz,  On a workstation there is little use for a second ethernet port especially since OS/2 doesn't have the necessary software to make use of the failover ability.  If you intend to use your new workstation as a firewall device then there would be a use for the second port - first port input from the wan and second port output to the internal lan.  Other than that they are usually used in servers either as failover or for running different subnets.

Hi Dariusz,

One quick question because I don't know the NSA325 at all.

When you set up the shares on the NSA325 did you enable SMB shares for that partition?  If you didn't you would most likely see a null connection which could throw up the trap - the fact it is a sys3175 tends to point to this.

Edit: also check the password for that share is, or isn't case sensitive which could also give that problem.

To answer your question.  When we use the open file dialog in PMView to get picture files on the NAS we see the thumbnails and if we then move the pictures to a local disk the thumbnail is still there with the picture.  I am not sure if anything is actually stored in EAs or it is the results of our having fast processors and a Gigabit lan.  In fact we have never investigated it because we see no problems.

Regarding SAMBA, the server is available as standard on the NAS boxes we use so it was just a matter of setting up a client on the workstations.  I understand that there is such a thing available as standard on eCS.

Hi Dariusz,

Here we have SAMBA setup to do things like mapping a NAS partition to a drive letter.  The only slight disadvantage with that is, if the NAS is in sleep mode the first access is slow but this depends on how fast the NAS wakes up.  Other than that there are no problems we can see.  We store a lot of the photos we take of clients engineering equipment on NAS boxes and can call them up and manipulate them on there.

Hi Dariusz,

Does your media server have an FTP server?  All the NAS boxes we have do and we use that copy full partitions into storage.  In fact that is how I changed most of the HPSF partitions we started with to JFS ones - copy to NAS, reformat as JFS and copy back, the only thing I had to do was copy the FTP client to a different partition before formatting the partition it was on.
