Applications / Re: A button to set window to ideal size
« on: October 12, 2018, 07:31:43 pm »
Hi David,

How do you define 'ideal size?  Does it depend on monitor resolution, I imagine a 28" 1920x1200 monitor has a very different 'ideal size' to a 21" 1920x1080.

The idea sounds good but I think it would need the ability to define each person's ideal size.

Why do you think I keep on complaining about a lack of USB 3 drivers?

On the other hand there are some boards that have PS/2 sockets for both mouse and keyboard and if they have a combi PS/2 socket that allows use of a keyboard it is still possible to move around the screen - slowly.

From what I have seen even new Intel processor based boards are now using USB 3 for keyboard and mouse which limits ArcaOS - OS/2 to ancient boards and hardware.

Since it is a USB 3 only unit your only chance of getting ArcaOS on to it is to remove the hard disk, put it into another machine and install ArcaOS on it there (can be an image file with DFSee) return it to the IdeaPad and hope it will work - might need tweaking.

I have used this method to get ArcaOS running on my Ryzen powered motherboards that only have USB 3 in all its variants.  In my case I use an image of the boot partition (made with DFSee) of an AMD 3850 APU based machine put on the hard disk when it as connected to a working machine via a USB/SATA caddy. Any additions/updates are made over the network

Thanks Lars,

Would the output from LSUSB of the various keyboards be helpful?

Are you referring to the 2.2.8 version that comes in two WPI archives?  If so have you also installed HobLink x11 that is required to run it?

I have it running on my WSeB CP2 computer that I use for graphics manipulation but have not tried it on a ArcaOS box.

Hi Lars,

Any chance you could send me the modified USBKBD.SYS so I can test it with my USB keyboards with extra keys?

Regarding a screenshot utility go to hobbes and search for gotcha.  That utility allows selective screenshots, full screen, full windows or selected areas of windows.

For setting the default font the only utility I jnow of is setdf101 (available on hobbes) but it has a very limited set of fonts.  The other thing would be to use an ini editor to change the fonts that way (not recommended unless you are sure you know what you are doing).

The best person to tell you about Japanese is Alex Taylor.  He is also our font expert.

To see all the Japanese glifs you need the full utf8 font (search these forums for information on that Martin brought it up some time ago - https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1806.0.html).

Hi Dave,

It is good to see that there is a move towards adding bldlevel info to these DLLs, it should make keeping track of them a little easier.

It was a very long time ago when I had problems with SUSE and I moved over to a deb based system, which as far as I am concerned works much better - a case of 'once bitten twice shy' I don't trust the RPM package system.

Here we see another drawback of the RPM way of doing things.  Since Lucide is provided as a WPI,  why didn't whoever built it add the obscure required DLLs to it?  From what I have seen the WPI format allows for testing of various files to check they are the ones needed and put them in the required places.

Thinking about it I suppose the fact there is no way of knowing which version of a RPM loaded DLL is, no buildlevel, which makes it rather difficult.  It also assumes that all the newer DLLs are backwards compatible with the earlier ones, which isn't always the case.  This was the reason I gave up using SUSE Linux many years ago - updating one program had the tendency to break others.

Sorry that was scan codes.  I used win05key-v309 on OS/2 and checkscancode v4 on win 7

Hi Lars,

Here are the outputs from usbres and lsusb for a similar adapter to the one Neil is using.  It passes the multimedia keys from my Logotech PS/2 keyboard but on a  Kensington USB keyboard they are not seen even the ones with identical keycodes.

Just a question for clarification.  Does the printer have a built in postscript interpreter?  I ask because many years ago I helped setup a company with Xerox Pantone printers and they had quite a sophisticated postscript interpreter.

If your printer can do postscript  and you have a PPD file for it you should be able to add it to the PSPRINT Driver and run it over the network using the SLPR output port.  I run all my Brother colour laser printers that way.

Is that a PS/2 to USB converter or is it the part that plugs onto the PS/2 header and hence you are using the keyboard as a PS/2 keyboard?

Hi Martin,

When you say you want to reprogram the commandline window what do you want to do with it?  If it is to change the size on opening use something like /k mode 80,45% in the parameters section of the properties dialog box, I use that to give me a reasonable sized window for things like the dir command.  It is also possible to customise the dir command with something like SET DIRCMD=/o:-d /p  (which gives a sorted by date and paged display), in CONFIG.SYS.

Anything else , sorry but you are on your own.

BTW, Thanks for the ME Editor.  I find it useful when I need a text file open and available on the desktop for days - the other editors force a reboot after a week if they are left open.

I should mention that if you have your NAS box on 24/7 and you want to auto connect to it when you start your computer you can do that.  Mapper file menu, 'autostart', enable'. it will put a start netdrive connections in the 'Startup' folder.
