Applications / Re: Shared folders IFS for VBox Additions, the test version
« on: December 25, 2018, 06:52:46 pm »

So, now we have two versions of OS/2 additions -- mine and Knut's. Mine has some features,
missing in Knut's version (his version has non-working WPS Drives object, for example. And
automount won't work, only manual mount. Plus no drive letter pinning support).

Hi Valery, did someone else than me reported he has issue for shared folder to be handled in wps, as advised you some posts before? No problem with fc/2, but in wps it shows as an empty drive even if it contains some folder and file,
Virtual machine is OS2 Warp 4.5 with your Guest Additions

Ok, I applied all suggestions, I still cannot get the usb pendrive appearing/recognized/managed as a new volume, neither in WPS nor in FC/2.
The only evidence that OS2 detects this USB device is the Resources Manager in OS2 System calling it, among the other USB resource list, "USB device 1.1.2" (this icon disappear if the USB stick is unplugged). Not even DFsee detects it.
I've also bought a new 4 Gb USB pendrive and reduced its volume size to 1.86 Gb Fat32 to see if it was a matter of >2Gb size.

But I've widely appreciated that all of you have tried to help me for this in anyway, providing friendly and competent indications, and even though I could not complete this task, at least I've learned other things good to know and have introduced some utility software good to have in any case.
USB hardware connection was wished but not so strictly fundamental in my OS2 Warp 4.52 VBox guest system, I can manage files exchange through the shared folder or ISO burned volume, and print works whith my network printer driver successfully configured.
Then I take the chance to thank you and wish a Merry Christmas.

Hi Doug, no startup.cmd acting, the autostart of vboxservice.exe in Startup folder gives same effect after having checked as told in a previous answer, but if you feel that might be the problem, will revert again in a startup.cmd script.
D drive in my system is what Vbox is setted for CD/DVD/ISO drive as IDE secondary master. E is a new removable drive/volume appeared after the config.sys editing following your suggestion, F is the Vbox shared folder as per Guest Additions functionality, and it works, should be referred to this line in config.sys:  IFS=C:\OS2\BOOT\VBoxSF.ifs  .
The command LVM.EXE /RediscoverPRM in the OS2 command window gives no answer, prompt goes again blinking on [C:\] one line below.
Here's my config,sys:

Lars, Doug, Ivan, Dave: my Warp 4.52 runs lvm and lvmgui and has a DFsee installation as well.
as lvm starts it displays devices 2 to 9 by 96 Mb each, while device 1  is the 2047 Mb system disk,  warning time by time incorrect partitioning informations and failed last IO informations for those devices 2 to 9

Hmmm. This indicates that you are using a version of OS/2, that does not auto mount USB devices (so old, that I had forgotten about that). I don't remember what you need to do to get a USB device mounted, in that case. With an LVM based version of OS/2 the command "LVM.EXE /RediscoverPRM" should mount it, but there should be no icon, until it is mounted (which is why I suspect an older, pre-LVM, system). That may also explain the "Not Ready" message.

Another possibility, is that the stick has been left dirty, and requires a CHKDSK /F to make it usable. Be sure to EJECT the device, before removing it. EJECT should work, if the device is not compatible with OS/2, but you may see the "Not Ready" message too. I also don't know whether you will be able to initialize the device, for use with OS/2, or not, without LVM.

Just trying to come up with other possibilities.

it is the OS2 Warp 4.52 .  Do you think -apart from preparing the volume >2Gb  that I'll try to do-  Lars'driver installation could be useful in this situation ?

Hi mauro

The output from pmdll indicates no problems...

Must admit that at the moment I have no idea why the usbcfg.exe call to GETDESC.DLL fails.

With regard to accessing a usb stick: If the usb stick is larger than 2Gb you need to "prepare" it before you can use it - see the USBcfg Help FAQs.

Pete

OK

delete these 3 lines and replace with:

BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
That'll get you up to 8 USB sticks/disks, up to 1 USB CD-ROM drive and up to zero USB floppy drives.

USBCDROM.ADD is completely bogus (but it won't hurt if you load it …)

ok thank you, now the situation appears to be lean, no more warnings anywhere.
Resuming:
with these lines on USB devices in config.sys

REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\apps\AMOUSE\AMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

the system boots with no warning lines, no error windows as the desktop loads, and I have those drive/devices A to F as expected, where E (iconized as a removable disk) should be the usb stick which refuses to open as device not ready, F is the Vbox shared folder and D is the CD/DVD/ISO removable, as before.
Still cannot handle the USB stick volume but I think have moved a step forward from my first help request post.
I'm slightly optimist

Hi mauro

The pmdll output image shows it is checking GETDESC.DLL not usbcfg.exe

In pmdll Options I have the following checked:-

Load System DLLs
Test load DLLs
Tree View

Using File, Select I select drive, directory and usbcfg.exe.

That results in usbcfg.exe being test loaded and checked - see attached Captured1.jpg

Regards

Pete

your're right Pete, sorry I thought you were indicating same files operations as before.
Here below is what it shows as entire tree (a bit of merge work, it is a long vertical picture)

Hi mauro

Either drag'n'drop the file usbcfg.exe onto the pmdll program object or start pmdll and then select usbcfg.exe as the executable to load.

Regards

Pete

Pete, drag'n'drop usbcfg.exe onto the pmdll program object is just what I did to have the result shown in that picture.  Maybe there is something else to recall in a pmmdl window menu?

Do not load USBMSD.ADD twice !

as Pete wrote: " If you want USB drive and CD support add these lines:-

BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD
BASEDEV=USBCDROM.ADD /CDS:1
BASEDEV= USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 "

which of the two should be deleted ?

341
Applications / Re: USB pendrive on OS2 4.52 VBox guest

If you want USB Mouse/Keyboard add this line:-

BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS

(If using as a guest in VBox you may not need the above line)

Hi Pete,
this is not sufficient for native USB keyboard and mouse support.

But in any case, in order to keep things simple and to not confuse Mauro any further, I strongly recommend to NOT specify any HID drivers (USBHID.SYs, USBKBD.SYS, USBMOUSE.SYS) at all. That's because for the guest, VBOX properly emulates a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse, no matter what physical keyboard and mouse HW you use.
In short: you need no USB drivers in the guest to have keyboard and mouse support in VBOX.

Lars
Pete and Lars, my config.sys lines now (following your indications) are:
REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD
BASEDEV=USBCDROM.ADD  /CDS:1
BASEDEV= USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\apps\AMOUSE\AMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

then at startup I'm getting the following situation -see pictures

1 a warning tells that volume D device is not ready - have to twiceclick "Return Error code to program" before screen clears-

2 devices from A to H appeared (they were A to E in the initial situation with no config.sys mods), of which now ABDFG when called give same "device not ready" warning,  H (Vbox shared folder) is empty as it should be, E is the CD/DVD/ISO volume for VBox assumption (use to be D)

3 screenshot of the actual Hardware Resources detected.

Thank you

Hi mauro

Well, does not look like a problem with GETDESC.DLL finding support files.

What is the output of pmdll when you try usbcfg.exe ?

Regards

Pete

sorry Pete, what I should exactly do for such test?

Hi Doug, a shadow copy of Vboxservice.exe is in the Startup folder (OS2 system folder), not in STARTUP.CMD

The instructions say to put it in STARTUP.CMD. I never even thought about trying that in the Startup folder. It may be starting too late, or not even running.

Doug, I created a startup.cmd file with written as :

rem VBox Additions ring3 service
start /n VBoxService.exe
EXIT

and removed the shadow copy of VBoxService.exe from the Startup folder

it acts exactly as having a shadow copy of VBoxService.exe in the Startup folder , same Vbox Guest Additions loading, same opening situation, same system behaviour.

Hi All

@Lars - I fully agree with your points; especially the "not confuse" bit  :-)

@mauro - I guess it is possible that GETDESC.DLL cannot find a support dll that it requires. I suggest you download and install pmdll http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/pmdll-2.12.zip

Create a program object for pmdll and then drag'n'drop the usbcfg.exe onto the pmdll object. That will show if there is a problem with any support dll file(s).

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete, here below you find the pmdll output screenshot

about GETDESC.DLL:

this DLL uses these additional DLLs:
OS2OM30.DLL
SOM.DLL
DOSCALL1.DLL
KBDCALLS.DLL
NLS.DLL
MSG.DLL
SESMGR.DLL

The last 5 DLLs should all be in the \OS2\DLL directory. SOM.DLL can be a bit tricky. You should use the one in \OS2\DLL as this is the most up-to-date (there are compilers/toolkits that tend to supersede this file with their own which is a bad idea).

OS2OM30.DLL should also be in \OS2\DLL.

A word of warning regarding DOSCALL1.DLL: it has to match the kernel that you are using. The version for the W4 kernel is DIFFERENT from the version for the SMP kernel. Normally (fixpak etc.) you will get the kernel and the corresponding DOSCALL1.DLL as a matched set so normally you will not need to worry. But if you replace the kernel, you should be aware of that.

For GETDESC.DLL, at least on my system, this file is located in \ECS\DLL and not in \OS2\DLL (I am still using eCS).

Lars

Hi Lars, I have all of those DLL present together with GETDESC.DLL in OS2\DLL directory
