Martin,

16:9 screen ratios are useless in any size less than a 28 inch screen, not enough height to do any useful work (they were designed for TVs to let them display wide screen films).

A 16:10 screen is better, those extra pixels in height make all the difference but, if they are used in a laptop (or desktop monitor) they up the price to stupid levels assuming you can find one.

Hi Martin,

How is the nightly incremental backup setup and does it backup to an off site NAS?  That is how my old clients were setup and from memory the most lost data was three minutes work.

Maybe the big problem is you being in one country and the server in another.  And thanks for getting back what you have, now I can start on the odd questions again.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB support in original CP2 CD

Hi John,

I assume you have a working CD/DVD drive on the T41.  You can use a CD to transfer the necessary drivers to your system.  If you send me an e-mail to ivanjt at free dot fr I can send you an ISO that contains the drivers and a few odd utilities (we use it when we re-image a WSeB (CP2) computer.

Hi John,

A couple of points.
You should be able to get a wired network working without too much problem - it requires the E1000.nif and E1000.os2 which you may have to add manually.
There are a few things you need to gather together, network driver, new USB drivers including the ehci usb2 driver (get the latest usbdrv zip from hobbes usbdrv217.zip). To use a FAT32 formatted USB stick you will also need the fat32 driver, also on hobbes, and that will require WARPIN to install the WPI.

To get those installed on your system you need to unpack them somewhere and then burn them to a CD-R and use that for the transfer.

To get the USB working you will need something like the following (taken from one of our workstations)

BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBPRT.SYS
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
DEVICE=C:\os2\SYSTEM\AMouse\USBMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\tools\usb\USBRESMG.SYS

Note the number of USBUHCD.SYS, USBOHCD.SYS and USBEHCD.SYS entries depends on the number and type of chip installed - HCIMONIT (command line) USBCfg (GUI) will sort that out for you.

If push comes to shove I could e-mail you the ISO of the CD we use that has all those little things in it.

Andreas, when I said 'stops responding' I should have said all open instances stop responding, can't save,  close them or start a new one.  In fact if we try and start a new instance, command line or otherwise, we get a total system lockup that requires a hard reset (we have had a few cases where it required a total power down of the computer before it would restart).

I can't help wondering how much the totally different types of kernel between OS/2 and Linux have it creating the problems we see.

Dmitry, your explanation fills in some holes but does not explain why if our computers have been running for more that a week we can start, for example, Open office 4.12 but if after closing it we can not start vBox 5.06 and trying to restart OO throws a fault of not being able to open SC.DLL.  At that stage even EPM which we use as our standard text editor stops responding and we have to reboot.

While I appreciate the work you are doing I can't help wonder why we can no longer keep our computers up for more than a week when it used to be months before a reboot was required.  We have our WSeB SMP image that has only changed when we added new fixpaks.  It has worked for years without problems but now ....

Applications / Re: Recommendations: File Managers?
« on: June 14, 2017, 10:59:34 pm »
Here we use File Freedom http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/browser/filef202.zip as out standard file manager.  It is simple, lightweight and does the job managing files, viewing the contents of zip files etc.  The only slight drawback is that it does not show the correct file size for files over 2.1 GB - something to do with it being written in 1999 I think.

(I have the source code but am not a programmer.  If anyone would like to look it over let me know)

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS: Impossible to install!

Hi Pete,

Congratulations that you got that far on an AMD 64 multi core based machine.  On my brand new, never had an operating system installed I couldn't even get it to load the ram disk at the start of the process. The stupid thing is that I can setup a ram disk and load a copy of freedos into it with ease.

As a check I tried it on a single core AMD 64 processor machine that we have in the service department.  4GB ram and a brand new 500 GB hard disk.  Everything appears to go well up yo the first reboot when it reports 'no operating system found', yet I can load our standard WSeB image on to that machine and it boots and runs without problems.

Herwig, a question.  How much testing of these DLLs is done on AMD multi core processor based machines?  I ask because we don't have any Intel processor machines here, even our servers are AMD based.

Herwig, I agree with your sentiments but why the decision to use a package manager from the 1990s, one that didn't work very well then and still doesn't?

We have Warpin that is quite capable of doing the same thing, and in my opinion, much better.  Yes, I know it would take a little more work to use that but until someone gets RPM/YUM certified for use on OS/2 Warpin or manual install is what some of us have to use.

It would also help if there was some way of identifying the unix DLLs to allow regression analysis to find out which ones work in which situations and with which programs (if we use the latest vBox we have to reboot to use OpenOffice 4 and then again reboot to use firefox 38 - not the sort of thing that goes down well in business).

Thanks for that information Dave.  We gave that system up as a bad job years ago when we tried using SUSE on our servers.

Hi Pete,

I agree with no sound but I do have the network up.

The big problem that I see is the instability of the mouse pointer - it has a tenancy to jump to the top of the screen at odd intervals.  Response times are rather slow as well.

Andi, I also downloaded the RPMs and unpacked them.  The DLLs that were missing were not in those packages.

The fact that you don't have any problems implies that the missing DLLs are included in something you have installed but I haven't.  This is why I was asking for a zip with ALL the dependencies.   Assuming that some DLLs from other programs will be available is very bad practice - the only time that is workable is if those DLLs are an integral part of the OS - since they are not they should be supplied.

Unzipped firefox into a new directory, downloaded all the listed RPMs (and as zips) and added the DLLs to the DLL directory.  Tried to start firefox and it popped up a note that a DLL was missing - that DLL was NOT in the listed requirements.  I then went digging and finally found it and added it to the DLL directory.  Tried to start firefox again and get a message about another missing DLL that is not in the listed requirements.

What is going on with these ports and why won't they provide a zip file with all the required DLLs?

The only version of firefox that just works is the one that Dave produced.

Hi Greggory,  I don't know if this is any use to you  http://rpm.netlabs.org/experimental/00/i386/i686/

I have it because I need to download the rpm, unpack it and then fit the DLLs into our existing setups to test before we send them out to out clients (rpm/yum is not certified for use on our clients machines).
