I have some sources for Java programs which where developed in netbeans. I want to install netbeans, but what version (of course one for Java 6)? Are there different versions for OpenJDK and Sun's Java? There are lot of sources available from programs which don't want to run in our implementation of OpenJDK.

Perhaps use Google to research what Linux or the BSDs use with our version of OpenJDK?

Hi
It will be interesting to try this and document which is the latest Netbeans that can run on OS/2-eCS with OpenJDK 6.
Here are the old Netbeans archive:
https://netbeans.org/community/releases/old.html
Version 6.9.1 says it requires Java 6. Since version 7 it requires Java 7, I guess Oracle tried to sync the release numbers with Java.
If you have any luck let us know and post the script.

On the old forum (2011) there was a comment by lpino :
http://www.os2world.com/oldforum/index.php?topic=3092.150 (http://www.os2world.com/oldforum/index.php?topic=3092.150)
Is anyone trying to make Netbeans (v.6.9.1) work under OpenJava?. I had have some success and it starts and run, but it's very unstable and it crashes constantly.
Looking the thread there is no more details about it.

I downloaded 6.9.1, but according specs our implementation of OpenJDK is not up to it. Our version is too low. Nevertheless I wanted to try. All they can come up with is Windows, all kinds of flavors of Linux and the Mac. For the independent stuff go to the bin directory and launch program something.exe. I did that, but its a Windows program. That's it, they didn't even took the liberty to say how to proceed if that doesn't work. Going through the Linux sh file it seems not too difficult to do it without installer. Only its a puzzle and the sh is almost not readable. Independent seems for them so much as another distribution of Linux.
-
Perhaps post the sh script if you are still having problems
-
Downloaded netbeans-5_5_1.zip. This distribution still have OS/2 stuff for installing and using. Lets see, if that work we always can try to trick a higher verion of netbeans.

Start at 5.0 I got that one working !
Above that 5.x+ the CMD states that the startup line is to long. There's thread on this somewhere around too.

Thanks for the tip Greggory. The only complaint so far is that it can't find Java. For the first cmd file you can fix it with --jdkhome statement, but within this command file a second is called and that one is complaining with the same message. Have to figure out how to solve that puzzle. Had input the lines
set path=q:\JAVA160\bin
set BEGINLIBPATH=q:\JAVA160\bin
set CLASSPATH=
set JAVA_HOME=
set SWING_HOME=
This works in my command files for starting Java programs, but in this case REXX doesn't like it. So I have to study a little more ;-)

Here's the other CMD file just use that:
E:\TMP\UNZIP\NETBEANS-5_5\NETBEANS\PLATFORM6\LIB]nbexec.cmd --jdkhome x:\java6jdk
This starts up 5.0, but zero testing.
Edit: just tried 5.5 and it's works too. See attached
Or the use the Windows eXe files (eCs 2.2):
pe nbexec.exe --userdir e:\tmp --jdkhome E:\Programs\Java\JavaOld\OpenJDK6-GA
Tip: always PE the Windows exe first, sometimes it just works !

I have netbeans 5 running. Thought I had to feed the Java home directory in the same way as the programs. Wrong!
I edited the file "netbeans.conf" in the directory "\netbeans\etc". I changed the line "#netbeans_jdkhome="/path/to/jdk"" into "netbeans_jdkhome="Q:\JAVA160"" and that did the trick, I had ""Q:\JAVA160\BIN", but that's wrong, because in the process the \BIN directory is added.
Deleted version 5, unzipped version 5.5.1. Edited the file "netbeans.conf" in the same way. But running gives the error "SYS1065: The input line is too long." after the line "Q:\netbeans\platform6\lib" in the command window. I did start with "netbeans.cmd".

I said it would say that - use 5.5.
E:\TMP\UNZIP\NETBEANS-5_5\NETBEANS\PLATFORM6\LIB]nbexec.cmd --jdkhome x:\java6jdk
or get rid of the script:
pe nbexec.exe --userdir e:\tmp --jdkhome E:\Programs\Java\JavaOld\OpenJDK6-GA

Sorry, thought that 5.5.1 was a bug fix or so on 5.5. Tried 6.9.1 with modified command files from 5.0, but I get same error "SYS1065: The input line is too long".
-
Downloaded 5.5. Installed it the way it should, get the same message that the line is too long (this is interesting, because we can compare with 5.0 and see the differences if any.). Do it your way, yes it installs, but I get the feeling that some things are missing in the menu, but I could be wrong. Furthermore, you need to go through all the command files while they are stuck for a part on version 4.1. Also lots of directory names are not updated with the one used in the zip file.

Ask Dave to redo the sh file, like he offered. Or use the windows.exe file should call everything too (did you actually use the Win exe) ?

The usual way around this error is to use a response file. A response file starts with @ and lists all parameters, one on each line and is run like foo.exe @response instead of foo.exe /param1 /param2 /etc.
Also watch out for long path names.
BTW, which zip are you using? netbeans-6.5.1-200903060201-ml-java.zip?

No, I used your option "nbexec.cmd --jdkhome x:\java6jdk" but with a different drive and path of course ;-). Don't have much of a success with pe, most of the times it doesn't go or work.

Don't know what is the cause, the message just pops up. I tried to start nbexec in 6.9.1 and it generates the message with nbexec.cmd.
Also watch out for long path names.
Tell that the developers of netbeans, I don't know if we can freely change that. Don't know what happens.

I go to https://netbeans.org/downloads/6.9.1/index.html (https://netbeans.org/downloads/6.9.1/index.html) and choose for OS independent Zip. I choose Java SE and download. Same story for other versions, but sometimes there are more choices, then always for IDE.

or get rid of the script:
pe nbexec.exe --userdir e:\tmp --jdkhome E:\Programs\Java\JavaOld\OpenJDK6-GA
Tried this one, but get the message "Failure to load "Q:\netbeans_691\bin\netbeans.exe" due to bad or missing MSVCRT.DLL
I run it with Odin 0.89 (latest?), in system32 directory there is no such file as MSVCRT.DLL.
If you was successful on this one, what did you do to avoid that message?
-
Find a Windows msvcrt.dll and put it into your Odin directory and retry.

Had an old one, it seems to work, but the installer comes back with another complaint that it can't find Java, even with --jdkhome and the location of Java. But pe destroys your ini in some way. I had a problem with a restart with the desktop and checkini did come up with lots of errors. Looks like that dll's from a real Windows does do lots of harm when added to the Odin directory.
-
I'm pretty sure used to mix in real Windows DLLs with Odin. Looking in my old Odin directory, I added msvcrt.dll at some point. Its dated from '99. It may be the version you used.

My version used version is Msvcrt.dll 266.293 01-03-99 21:44 (copied from File Commander/2)
-
it's the same version I have here. Unluckily there is lots that go wrong with Odin and there doesn't seem to be debug builds anymore so no logging. As I don't have netbeans to test, you'll have to wait for Greggory to post his setup.
-
Installed Netbeans 6.1, this is the log. Halfway you can see that it is still a no go, we're missing a dll in our SDK. Second, there is a lot coming with it we can omit, like the double byte locale.

Installed Netbeans version 6.5. Now I don't get a complaint about a missing dll, strange? I'm curious if we can delete the _ja, _CN and _BR stuff. This might trigger in later versions the error "line is too long". Here is the log;

If you want to try yourself, you need nbexec.cmd, enclosed the one I use. The nbexec.cmd has to be placed in the directory drive:\netbeans\platformX\lib. The X in platformX might be there or is a figure which is for now for some reason going up, for this version its platform9.
Next you have to run it. Go to drive\bnetbeans\platform9\lib, your nbexec.cmd is there!
nbexec.cmd --jdkhome your SDK drive\path in capitals --userdir drive\path (this MUST be outside netbeans or JAVA.
So, to get the above
nbexec.cmd --jdkhome Q:\JAVA160 --userdir Q:\NETBEANSUSER
I read somewhere in the faq on netbeans homepage that with installation problems its best to use capitals.

Tried again version 6.9.1 in identical way as previous versions and I get the error "line too long". So for now it looks like version 6.8 is the last we can use. Versions up 6.9.1 are for JAVA 7.
-
Now we know that Netbeans 6.8 does install, we still can't do a thing with it because the modules are not loaded. To do that you have to go to drive\netbeans\bin and run netbeans.cmd. But this file is from version 4.1 or so. So all directories are wrong in some sort. I'm not too deep in REXX, may be someone can help here.
The good news, I managed to install Netbeans 6.8 complete, including the modules. I got at first the error "line is too long", but from the above I saw that all kind of locale files are in it too. So I deleted all locale files except one. Did edit the file netbeans.cmd, first wrong and of course no success, re-insert other directories and I got started.
Its still not alright, I don't have icons, so the installer did not fully run. to give you an idea;

Thought that Netbeans 6.9.1 was the last version we could use, but I was wrong. Learned from the wiki that version 7.3.1 is the last one. I have downloaded this version and installed. According the wiki you have to tweak a little, but its more than a little. I managed to get it up and running
(http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/ff/7DFFZ3FF.jpg)
After setup the system had the message that there are updates. The updates are downloaded and installed(?). I had to restart, all goes fine. But closing the program was not possible, it starts over and over again. I have posted a bug with info on the netbeans site. The downloads are stored in own directories. After removing those directories with FC/2 all was fine, but the message updates are available is also present again.
Tried to compile a Java program, I had success with the Anagram game after installing a plugin, its a simple game, but it shows that its working ;-)
-
Will you consider packing a distro with all necessary tweaks, dependencies, startup scripts, et cetera?

Will you consider packing a distro with all necessary tweaks, dependencies, startup scripts, et cetera?
Its still far from so to speak. I need to go through a REXX script and there are still minor issues in the log which I have to figure out. But as soon as I'm confident that its all okay I probably will put the solution on my webpage with a zipfile for the REXX scripts and some icons.

I have updated my homepage for Java NetBeans, go to http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e36.htm (http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e36.htm) and have fun. I made this decision because it might take months before I have figured out what's wrong on some points, so there are still some issues to solve. May be you will find a solution for some of those. I have posted a bug on Netbeans which have to do with upgrading the system. So don't agree with the remark there are 2 updates. May be this has to do with what I have done to get it installed, don't know. We'll see.
I want to point out that the Dutch part of my homepage about OS/2-eCS is far behind.
