How can I get more young people to code for OS/2 and became part of the community

Getting young people interested in coding for OS/2 and becoming part of the community involves a blend of outreach, education, and creating opportunities that resonate with their interests. Here are some strategies to consider:

1. Promote OS/2's Unique Value:

Highlight the Niche Appeal: OS/2 is a legacy system with unique strengths, such as its stability, and it provides an opportunity to work on low-level systems programming or legacy systems that are rare to find.
Connect with Retro Computing Enthusiasts: Many young people are drawn to retro computing as a hobby. Position OS/2 within this niche to attract those who have an interest in preserving or reviving older systems.
Showcase Its Relevance: Emphasize how skills gained in OS/2 development can translate to modern systems programming, driver development, or even embedded systems.

2. Make Learning Accessible:

Provide Learning Resources: Create beginner-friendly tutorials, guides, and resources that introduce OS/2 programming in a fun, engaging way. Consider creating video tutorials or interactive workshops.
Leverage Modern Tools: Use modern platforms (YouTube, GitHub, Discord, etc.) to share code, collaborate, and teach OS/2 development. Make sure OS/2 development environments are easy to set up, possibly using virtualization or emulation.
Hackathons and Coding Competitions: Organize online or in-person events where participants can work on OS/2-related projects. This could be a good way to engage young programmers and show the excitement of building for this platform.

3. Engage with Schools and Universities:

Collaborate with Computer Science Programs: Offer guest lectures, workshops, or projects related to OS/2. If possible, provide internships or mentorship opportunities where students can gain real-world experience.
Open-Source Contributions: Encourage students to contribute to open-source OS/2 projects. This can serve as a great entry point for them to get involved with the community and learn.

4. Modernize the Image of the OS/2 Community:

Be Active on Social Media: Engage with younger audiences on platforms like Twitter, Reddit, or YouTube. Share OS/2’s history, its strengths, and what the community is working on today.
Create a Vibrant Online Community: A supportive, welcoming environment is key. Consider using platforms like Discord or GitHub to host discussions, share projects, and mentor new developers.
Highlight Career Potential: Show how working on OS/2 or similar systems programming can be a path to becoming a sought-after expert in legacy systems or even cybersecurity.

5. Offer Mentorship and Guidance:

Mentorship Programs: Pair young developers with experienced OS/2 developers to provide guidance, encouragement, and advice as they navigate the system.
Contribute to Meaningful Projects: Allow younger programmers to contribute to projects that have real-world impact, making them feel like they're part of something significant.

6. Gamification and Rewards:

Create Challenges: Offer challenges or competitions where developers can solve real-world OS/2 problems or develop new features.
Offer Incentives: You could offer prizes, community recognition, or even financial incentives for significant contributions to OS/2 projects.

By creating an engaging, accessible, and rewarding environment, you can inspire young people to explore OS/2 and become a part of its development community.

Applications / Dynamic Icons - Not Showing Thumbnail Icons.
« on: September 09, 2024, 11:14:37 pm »
Hello

I was wondering about this issue with Dynamic Icons.

- First I turn Dynamic Icon on for all the desktop. "System Setup - Workplace Shell" under the "Icon Size" tab, "Icon Display = Dynamic Size".

- Second, I set "SET BIGICONSPATH=C:\SYS\ICONS\BIGICONS" or any other icon theme.

The issue is that if you you can not no longer see the icon thumbnail (?) that PMView can do that to an PNG, BMP or PTR image. I think it puts the Thumbnail on the EAs or something.
--

Workaround 1: There is a work around to disable "Dynamic Icon" on the folder, but it is more like a workarround instead of how one will like to see the icons. And also the icons will get smaller to the default size.
--

Workaround 2: Remove the PNG, BMP, PTR images from the PNG Icon Theme. I like this one since the icons are not small, but for the other images that does not has "thumbnail" it will not show the icon of the theme.
--

Do you think it will be good to request the author to try to find some solution for this? Like trying first to display the "thumbnail" of the image file instead setting the default image icon first by default?

Any other workarounds? Did my issue makes sense ? (sometimes it is hard for me to explain desktop/GUI things  ;D)

Hi again

I was thinking if it can be possible to upscale the Warp 4 icons with AI, but it still looks too creepy  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Great experiment, I enjoyed reading it (translated in English).

Which is the screen resolution that you have for that laptop?

Utilities / Re: Booting OS/2 with an Animation
« on: September 08, 2024, 12:30:56 am »
Hello

Just to document this old thread. The OS/2 Warp 3 Beta 2 CD-ROM has a boot animation:

First, there is like little OS/2 logos and it switches to the big one
Second, after some loading the OS/2 circles disappear and appears in an animation.

Hello Doug

There is an INF file with documentation.
Go to "System Setup - Workplace Shell" to the "Icon Size" tab and press the Help button there.

PNG Icons Themes
If you want to change the PNG icons themes, I have this little draft document here:

For any PNG icon theme you want to put on ArcaOS, it is as easy as pointing it on the config.sys with:
- SET BIGICONSPATH=C:\SYS\ICONS\BIGICONS

Change Default Size.
To change the default size of all the desktop icons, go to "System Setup - Workplace Shell" under the "Icon Size" tab.

Internet / Re: Dooble releases-Qt6
« on: September 06, 2024, 02:47:43 am »
Hello

Here in Ecuador Whatsapp is used a lot. I also tried with Qt6 and Dooble here.

I changed the agent to a different one so it can load the page, otherwise it asks you to update the browser:
- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/128.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Here on my side is very slow. I was able to link it, it took some time to load my chats, I can see those, but it is very slow here in my VM to be able to chat. It seems it takes a lot of CPU resources.  But it is nice to see it loading, I will try to test it on real hardware this weekend.

Thanks for all the efforts of porting Qt6 and Dooble !!!

Topic was split to "Retro Machine - DOS VDM - OpenOffice". Let's hope I did it right.

Let's continue with the 64-bit discussion.

Multimedia / Re: Updated Uniaud32 build
« on: September 01, 2024, 05:20:31 pm »
Updated to latest 6.1.x kernel code: https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-6.1.107-20240901.zip

Thanks Paul

I tested it (Release version) with ArcaOS 5.1.0 (BIOS) guest on VBox 7.0.14  (Windows 11 23H2 host).
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps. Just like the included ArcaOS 5.1 Uniaud.
-- I still have an issue that the first time I play a wav, I hear it loud (100%) and the next times I play it I hear it lower respecting the volume setting. If I drag a file to force the drag sound it sound 100% again, I play another wav  and it is 100% again and the next times respects the volume control (40%). It's the same issue from 3.01.03 (5.14.7), not a new issue.
- VM Intel HD Audio: Works, Audio control working, no traps.
-- But it still produce sounds in a lower volume. I had to rise it to a 100% to be able to hear something in my speakers, it is the same issue as the 3.01.03 (5.14.7).

For me it is working fine I'm keeping it on my VM.
