Programming / Re: A little help with OS/2 Warp Architecture Components
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:06:53 pm »
hi Daniel

Yes, I was trying to build this graphics some days ago since I wasn't able to find any high level architecture/component graphics on the internet.

Maybe you are right, possible a ring level is not an adequate for a architecture component graphic. I will remove the rings of this graphic just to focus on components.

Send me over the scans for inspiration, I really need to have some more references.

Regards

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply.

About the rings I was using this reference from "OS/2 Architecture - A Programmer's Overview (Scott E. Garfinkle, 2000)"

It says:
"Ring 0: Kernel, Device Drivers, Filesystems
Ring 1: Not used
Ring 2: "IOPL" -- mostly print and video
Ring 3: Everything else"

That's why I was drawing it that way.

Programming / A little help with OS/2 Warp Architecture Components
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:40:47 pm »
Hi.

I'm trying to build a graphic with the OS/2 Warp and eComStation architecture component.
I want to make a graphic inspired on some I had see for Linux and MacOS X like this ones.  Something at a very high level and based on Warp 4.52 - eComStation 2.x

http://maxwit.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/document/maxwit_linux_arch_small.jpg
or
http://lh3.ggpht.com/-evdkq9J856I/THL-ZxAZB6I/AAAAAAAAeTI/VZ-ZHSV8EKQ/400px-Diagram_of_Mac_OS_X_architecture.svg.jpg

I have this draft version:

But I still miss:
- where does DIVE, DART or GPI goes? ohh and OpenDoc.
-  I guess DSOM should be in same block as SOM, right?
- Uhm.. no idea what goes in Ring 2.  Is there any specific component names that goes there?
- Any suggestions on how to improve the graphic?

I know we may not reach a 100% agreements since this is only a visual representation at a high level, and sometimes we really like to dig as deep as possible, but your comments are welcome.

I hope that at the end I can write something and post it on EDM/2.

General Discussion / Re: osFree Website

Hi Daniel.

On the last Os2World crash (end of 2012) the site went down. Valery is still coding for that project, and I had moved the domain to a newer direction. I think they are going to put back the server soon.

You can connect to the IRC to #osfree (efnet) and talk to valerius there. I always find him on the morning (South America time) connected.

General Discussion / #OS2World IRC Channel
« on: March 06, 2013, 04:07:47 pm »
Some years ago we launched an IRC channel for OS2World.com but it never had enough traction.

The channel is on the efnet and can be accessed if you have chatzilla installed on firefox with this link.
irc://efnet/os2world

I connect frequently to this channel from time to time, and there is no activity, I'm the only member on it.

So my question is, would there be someone with more experience creating IRC bot, and hanging out on IRC wanting to collaborate taking over the channel ? (well, it is the efnet, so it is like the wild west there).

Also, is there any interest on group, online chat rooms on the community ?

Any comments are welcome.

Hi Melf.

I don't know how old is your LG K5. Do you think it can be a AHCI missing driver error?
Can you check enabling it?

1)  Virtual Machine on VirtualBox as a Guest.

Ok, if I switch the adapter to Intel PRO 1000 (In the guest VM options), the boot procedure just go fine.

The Demo looks good, it has:
- OpenJDK, QT, Odin preinstalled.
- Firefox 10.0.11
- QMetro, Blubbels, SeaHaven Towers, SimSu, QSoloCards

The eCS 2.2 beta demo CD looks very similar to eCS 2.1.
The good things are it has the boot options just like eCS 2.1 to select which drivers to load (AHCI, ACPI, etc).
The icons looks slight changed, I haven't tried the rest yet.

My issues:

1)  Virtual Machine on VirtualBox as a Guest.

When I try to run on it on VirtualBox the boot procedure get locked when trying to load the network card.

2) On real hardware. Thinkpad L420.

- The trackpoint and trackpad does not work. I had been having this issue since I tried eCS 2.1 on this machine. An external USB Mouse is required.

- The Intel Centrino N 6205 wireless card is not recognized, of course.

I'm going to keep testing it.

Does anybody wants to share their first impressions about the "eComStation 2.2 Beta Demo CD".

I will be trying it today and post something back.

Hi Sigurd.

I want to take your comment more like a "reality check" than "pessimism".

Please notice that in the past OS/2 had been very aggressively hit by the press. They always say "OS/2 is a superior product but...". Or what happens today, that we have no press at all (since we are a non-relevant platform).

Now, I don't care if someone write a positive article about eComStation. But we need to focus on the positive things about eComStation and fight/help/support/suggest/chip in for the stuff that is missing.  So, I don't think it is bad for us that someone write a positive article about eCS.

I'm glad that we are going to have a new eComStation release, I can put all the negative points on the table, I can still complain about the long term strategy, but today I'm glad that we are going to have a new release.

Thanks Melf for letting us know. I will try it.

Let's see if we can upload some eCS-OS2 screen videos on YouTube easily :)

You are right. I'm having the same issue.

The author released it as "AS IS" freeware and do not longer code it, so we are on our own.

But if you are happy with OpenWatcom, I recommend you to stay that way. It is better to use an open source IDE. I just wanted this software to be freeware to help anybody that has code made with this tool .
