I will take some time and look writing about it. I do not want to give incorrect information.

Networking / Re: apache2.4 configuration

When I have added the -f Httpd.conf entry the pid file is not found.

The pid file holds the correct pid number so if I do a manual kill that does work.
I am not sure that is a good idea. I can write a workaround to automate the kill.

apache -k restart

will do the same thing because apachectl is a shell script

Networking / apache2.4 configuration
« on: March 24, 2024, 02:25:11 pm »
I am attempting to use apache 2.4 with Python 8.1  and use apachectl to stop the server.
Starting the server runs fine. The httpd.conf file has:
PidFile "d:/apache24/logs/httpd.pid"
and the server creates this file on startup but then "apachectl -k stop" does not work and complains that there is not a pid file.

Does anyone know how to make this work?

General Discussion / using DETACH to make the desktop more responsive
« on: March 22, 2024, 05:05:49 pm »
When a command line program is running that does not need user input then DETACH makes the program run better. It does not interact with the desktop so the desktop runs like it has the computer to itself. This has been particularly useful for java based programs which can be run in the background.

Article Discussions / Re: Too many cases of "OS/2 is dead, dying, etc"
« on: March 18, 2024, 10:39:59 pm »
Hello JT

- 1st: On 1996 when the rumor came out that IBM's Gerstner said it will not longer invest in OS/2.

I knew an IBM Exec in 1994 that told me then that IBM had agreed to demands from Microsoft to not market to home users any more. It took a while for the heads of the divisions to follow this new direction. I was told the reason for this change was that IBM was getting a preferred price on Windows 3.1 for resale on IBM machines which was going to be pulled by Microsoft if OS/2 was marketed to regular users. The PC division of IBM was making a lot of money then and did not want OS/2 so Gerstner decided on the new direction. At that time the divisions of IBM were separately managed and where separate profit centers. OS/2 was a money losing profit center at that time. Later I talked with Gerstner and he was happy with the change.

Communication / Re: COM Port Setup

I have a terminal program called "Talkthru for OS/2" which has a decent com ability. I also use ZOC which has some different features. Talkthru is what I use for serial coms and it should correct your problem. You need to fiddle with the speed line settings.

What boot manager do you use? It would be nice to mix UEFI and non-UEFI disks on a system.

I would like the same thing due to large amounts of data on MBR disks.

On fresh installs on all my B550 based boards I get through the Ist phase and then it rebooted and the screen is dark with a blinking cursor in the upper left side.

I was loading an Asus x570-PLUS with the same situation. The way it worked was to use the bios to set the boot device to the USB and then on first reboot change the boot device back to the boot drive. I also had to change the ACPI line in the config.sys to remove the /VW before the first reboot for the install to see the USB. This was new behavior from earlier versions.

On my system with 7 sata connections I had to remove all the sata connections except the boot drive sata connection for the install to recognize drive C:   Once installed the other sata connections were connected again and worked. This was the same as earlier versions.

Another new item was the ArcaOS splash screen last a lot longer than in the past.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS and Storage - Discussion

Hi Greg,

Do you really need 8 disks?  I have 5 on one of my Ryzen test units, the sixth place is a DVD unit and I have never had to disconnect any of them when I update the OS.

The smallest drive is a 1 TB unit all the others are 2 TB units which give more than enough space for storing data and programs.  I think you might have shot yourself in the foot with the extra eSata cards.

What motherboard is it?  My MSI B550-A Pro board has as standard 6 disk connectors as well as 2 M2 slots so no lack of disk space (see specifications section of attached manual).  It can also have 15 USB ports though I don't have them all attached.

I can't attach the manual as it is too large but it is easy to download from the MSI manuals site.

I have lots of data and some are used as backups of others. I also have hot-swap cages to add and remove drives, that requires bringing down the system to change drives. The problem with needing to remove drives for an install is required if there is more than one drive. The total number does not matter, except for the unplugging of everything.

I am of the opinion that Secure Boot should be off because is serves little purpose other than enabling M to ban software.

Setup & Installation / ArcaOS and Storage - Discussion
« on: April 14, 2023, 04:54:02 pm »
I have a copy of Win and I don't even have to press the update button. It does it form me whenever it wants.

About AMD, I run my workstation on ArcaOS with a Ryzen motherboard with 8 usb slots and 2 additional eSata cards. I routinely have 8 hard disks running. The problem is to load or reload the OS i have to unplug all the drives except the C: drive or the OS cannot find the boot device. I am wondering if 5.1 does this better.

Hey Greg,
Apologies - you and Jan-Erik are basically the only two to provide feedback.

Cheers,

Paul
That is alright, It has been a long time since I commented on PostgresQl. Every now and then I revisit the subject.

I had been using the older port but the current one will not start on my system. Looks like there is a path issue which I could not figure out. I use postgresql extensively in linux. The current version is very good. With well designed tables, indexes and queries it can approach DB2 speeds.
