Applications / Re: Firefox 45.9 XUL.DLL error
« on: February 13, 2019, 08:32:12 am »
I had the psprint problem on one of my systems too. It was with the latest Seamonkey. In the end I uninstalled some printers and got it working.

Before I tried different ps drivers too without success. Copied them over from a working system did not work too. Think I used the pr...exe comming with pmfax(?) to delete the queues and drivers until SM was happy. I guess my printer installations where messed up badly. Though I had > 6 printers installed which I didn't even owned at that time with different queues and.... So cleaning up this mess was not a bad idea anyway.

Hardware / Re: Turning Off Monitor (DPMS) with Panorama
« on: January 27, 2019, 04:31:41 pm »
There may be more than one way to switch off displays. At least for desktop systems (external monitor) there's an easy one. For my package of the black utility I write to the PCI registers of the ATI graphic card to disable primary and secondary output. After that the connected monitor decides to go into power down as there is no graphic signal available on any input any more. With other graphic adapters it is enough to write to the proper VGA registers. Older graphic card bioses seem emulate the VGA registers well enough to do the job. But not the ATI X300 and up.

With notebooks usually there is no such electronic which looks at input video signal. Guess you have to find the register(s) which switches the backlight converter on/off. No clue if this is standardized in ACPI or any other standard.

I tried to refrain from answering you again but as you constantly preach your point of view and ignoring what others say I have to make a final post on this from my side.

For me it seems you don't want to take advices from others and you absolutely don't want to discuss arguments coming from others. Instead you constantly complain that others are not polite enough to you. ('hatred', 'sidelong insults', .... ). For me it's obvious you understand a lot of what was written here in a different way than I do. That's okay. People are different. Communication is a complicated thing especially if it happens only in written form and when non native speakers are involved like me.

For me all what you write here is a lot of marketing speech which is hardly related to OS/2. Neither your religious things nor your private things belongs to this forum (only my personal POV of course). Even most of your technical talking is hardly related to OS/2 ('tetris for windows', even your ES/x are clearly different to OS/2 as of your own words, and even your goal is NOT to run OS/2 software but to rewrite all of them at best). That's the reason I will ignore all your future posts.

As you constantly emphasize your skills and your project leading capabilities to try to motivate others to follow your ES/x development I think you neglect that there are other experienced people here with similar skills and know how. I for myself work in computer industry for more than 30 years. I've programmed basic graphic VGA drivers and applications like your tetris more than 30 years ago. I've worked for so much different projects, small and big, software, hardware, complex systems, ... that I've seen so many successful projects but also failing ones. I've seen so much people who talk about projects and ultimate features although they don't had the insight to really understand what they are promising. A lot of time people are simply to childish to have an overview of what it really takes to make happen what they are promising. Some 'programmers' built there first C hello world program and think from now they are the hero software leaders who will lead the world in the near future. That does not mean you fall in this category. But your resistance to discuss the consequences of your talking ('we can rewrite them all') is not the best requisite for handling such a big projects well IMHO.

Anyway I wish you success with your projects. Maybe sometimes when you have something OS/2 related or even Linux related I'll even test it. But I for myself being not very interested in Windoze or DOSish stuff anymore.

Live long an prosper.

Or copy the data to a JFS formated USB stick. I've an additional JFS partition on my ArcaOS boot stick which would be fine for that.

410
No clue how you tried to shrink the JFS Partition but why don't you simply copy over all files? Maybe booted from ArcaOS stick while both disks are attached.. Or rar the files and unrar on the target afterwards?

The problem is so many OS/2 apps aren't open source and most of those that are, are ports to begin with.

We can rewrite them all.  It just takes teamwork.
I wish you success. But before I believe in your work I need to see something that really works. You do not need to rewrite f.i. PMView for that. You only need to recompile Apache Open Office and Seamonkey on your kernel to proselytize me. Or current Firefox 64 instead SM if you like.

We, the current remaining OS/2 community can not even do that. But you talk about as it would be an easy job for you or a small group of believers. Of course in theory it's true

We can rewrite them all.
But in practice it's no more than a lot of hot air. It's clear you do not have the slightest idea what work it would take to do what you're talking about. Even if a few hundred developers would devote all their spare time on your projects I don't believe you can reach the 'simple' target - AOO and SM on your kernel - within the next 10 years. Please proof me wrong.

I have written a Tetris-like game for Windows.
In case you missed it, this is os2world.com not windoze.spam.

...This is not something unique to notebooks, desktops also have the same problems.
I wasn't clear enough. I usually mean self build desktop systems. There are still a lot of good compatible boards available. And compatible industrial boards will be available even a few years from now I'm sure. Of course you have to buy proper stuff. Often not the cheapest crappiest stuff the next supermarket wants to sell you. But you've a chance to get something that works in contrary to notebooks where you don't have these option anymore.

And wifi is not needed for desktop systems. Except for the few of us who do develop wlan stuff on a desktop system ;). Otherwise no wifi needed (and often not wanted) with desktop systems.

Even USB2 is available for desktops easily. Either still on the mobo or via PCI card.

So for desktop users like me (and Julien) high resolution graphic (and/or multi-head) do have much higher priority. Of course different people - different needs. We'll see how AN sets priorities.

Don't really care for Wifi. And you can always get around that with a Wifi bridge and wired NIC,.

A WiFi bridge works, as long as there is a wired NIC to attach it to. apparently, newer computers don't have anything except WiFi any more (especially laptops). They don't have CD/DVD drives, or anything but USB 3, either.

As long as there is CSM in BIOSes, I'm not sure if UEFI is so important.

Apparently, that is becoming less common too. Without some sort of BIOS support, OS/2, in it's current form, has no hope of running on new hardware. UEFI support is a much more important project, than supporting high res monitors.

As usual it depends on POV.

Doug I know you're a notebook guy. But we desktop users see these two points contrary. Wonder how the main AN customers sees this. I got the impression their company customers (which mainly pay their bills) are running dekstop systems. But maybe you've a better insight.

FAT32 does not support files larger than 4GB, period.
And older versions of our driver only supports up to 2GB. IIRC you need a pretty new version of fa32.ifs if you need >= 2GB.

Applications / Re: SeaMonkey 2.42.9 CPU spiking
« on: December 16, 2018, 10:36:22 am »
I see similar spikes on my dual core. But my profile is rather old. And sometimes the spikes goes away. On guess is chatzilla or the email client. Unfortunately switching profile to default results in a hard hang when I close the AddOn manager (which does search forever otherwise).

On a 4 core system 3 cores are running at 10 - 40% constantly while core 0 is near 0 utilization. When I close SM utilization goes to 0.x for all 4 cores. Again switching profile to default end in the same hard hang. But a trp report is created on this machine. But that's another problem.

Dave - which of your SM versions is the best to test and track down problems? I'm not sure we are all running the same. My about:buildconfig is -

Networking / Re: Test build wpa_supplicant v2.7
« on: December 03, 2018, 09:33:20 pm »
I've updated wpa_supplicant again. This is now at the same level as the official 2.7 as it was release yesterday.

https://bitbucket.org/Andi_B/os-2-wpa_supplicant/downloads/

Unfortunately I had to delete the old versions cause some sites directly linked to an old version. The drawback is I don't see the download counter for them. I didn't find a way to simply rename the binary on bitbucket.

General Discussion / Re: ES/2 will be renamed e/OS2
« on: November 23, 2018, 03:45:20 pm »
IMHO every name which includes / is far from good. People often talked ridiculously about OS/2 as being only half of an operating system ( /2 ). Moreover for the casual user input to search engines with / in a name gives all but proper results.

Another annoying thing is that on non US keyboards / isn't that easy to type as the Americans are used to. But of course it's your name and you have to like it and live with it :-)

Networking / Re: Dual Network adapters
« on: November 01, 2018, 05:26:40 pm »
Configure all adapters (wired and wireless) in MPTS/NAPS. I usually configure the wired adapter first. F.i.
- first adapter Intel(R) PRO.. - Protocols 0 - TCP/IP, 0 - NETBIOS (not over TCP/IP in this case, you would need a different number if you're using 'Netbios over TCP/IP')
- second adapter GenMac Wrapper... - Protocols 1 - TCP/IP, ...1|2|....

You need to use different protocol numbers if you have the same protocol bound to different interfaces though. Hence the 0 and 1 above for TCP/IP.

Usually I do not configured the wireless in TCPIP config. So \mptn\bin\setup.cmd has only one ifconfig lan0 ... statement (actually more in my case as I use alias addresses too. But that's a different story). If the wireless is up and running dhclient & xwlan/wlanstat does the TCP/IP reconfiguring (if needed).

But if you have a GenMac supported interface which is running at bootup you can also configure fixed TCP/IP if you like. You only need to use different networks for different adapters (f.i. 192.168.... / 10.0....). Probably this is not what you like so I do not explain more on this now. Ask again if you need more information.

OS/2 can boot from FAT, HPFS and JFS. I've never heard it can boot from FAT32.
