It was mentioned in the previous post that ACPI.PSD has to be patched and to be use  with /ST=0 in it's command line.

So it was. Unfortunately, I didn't think to read through this thread again, to find vital information, that needs to be in a README.

I am not inclined to use a patched PSD for normal operation. I am also not inclined to maintain a separate CONFIG.SYS. I tried that for a while, and it was turning into a nightmare. Updating ACPI would also turn into a problem.

I need to evaluate what needs to happen. Perhaps I will put OS/4 into a virtual machine, and test it there.

I heard about something like that, many years ago. It turned out to be a clock synchronizing signal, sent over the power lines (to sync all of the wall clocks). Why it would affect only one machine would be a puzzle, but looking for something like that might solve the riddle.

what PSD do you use ?  in case ACPI.PSD,  hope  it is patched  and /ST=0   is added to command line

I use the latest ACPI from Arca Noae (3.22.06).

I think somebody had better smarten up, and at least document things like that, if they want users to do testing for them.

Meanwhile, OS/4 is, again, broken IMO.

4270  -  a bug in clock03b.sys  was fixed. the issue were sporadic traps

Well, I get TRAP0008 immediately after the first 'PIC' message, on both machines where I try OS/4. It is definitely not "sporadic".

I wish the WhatNew file would get updated, so a user might have some idea about what the developers are messing around with.

Ok, I made changes in new revision, but with more strictive check.

I don't care who fixes it. At the moment, I don't need anything that OS/4 provides, while I do need the QSINIT fix for the 512 meg memory limit, when 4 GB is installed (also fixed by OS/4), and I REALLY like the RAMDISK. That means that I will use the latest QSINIT (I always use a matching HD4DISK.ADD), as long as it works. I will also test OS/4, when it works with the current QSINIT package, but I probably won't actually use it, until there is a reason to do so.

Thanks to all of you...

Applications / Re: WarpIn application install database...

The easy way is to use WarpIn to remove the entires (don't uninstall), then reinstall, changing the target as required. You may have a problem if the package doesn't allow you to select individual paths for the DLLs. Most will automatically select the default path (usually either \OS2\DLL or \eCS\DLL).

I will comment, that you are simply making work for yourself by doing that.

problem is this file does not appear to use the standard OS2 INI file formatting

The INI Viewer, from FM/2 (in the tools), works, for me. The file name is "DATBAS_G.INI" where G is the boot drive letter, so you can use a single WarpIn install with multiple boot drives, if you like. I haven't tried using it to change anything in the INI file.

Do you have a clue what might went wrong?

I was looking this over, again. It occurs to me that you may need to use LXLITE to unpack the files before using the commands to it run in single CPU mode. I think that
Code: [Select]
LXLITE /U+ fname.exe should do it (if it will work). Be sure to keep a good copy of the file.

Doug, the point is not about avoiding something, but about getting the best out of the available options. Actually, you can't compare directly one option with another, because each of them has its own case of usage.

So far, OS/4 has added nothing that seems to be useful. It does break system dumps, which is a major handicap for those who develop software for eCS. Add the questionable legal status, and I don't see any reason to use it. That doesn't mean that I will stop testing it, but I won't spend much time trying to figure out problems, until it offers some advantage. One must also remember that it is not guaranteed to work in all cases (or even work, at all). I find that those releases which work, work well. Those that don't work, are completely broken, but there is no clue what was changed, and it should be obvious to the programmers that there is a problem. It seems that they just make the package available, whether it works, or not.

Quote
The way it goes now the developers seem to divert more and more from the standard. No doubt they have good reasons for that, but imho it's a mistake.

If they are doing that to figure out exactly what works, and doesn't work, I cannot find fault (even when it doesn't work, at all). However, if they intend to make a proper release in that state, I agree that it is a mistake.

QSINIT, on the other hand has solved a serious problem with memory being limited to 512 meg (4 GB installed), on some machines. As a bonus, it adds the RAMDISK that uses memory above what OS/2 can normally access, which also offers the possibility of using that memory for other things. There is also no question about the legality, even though the license is not very good. I suspect that that is a misunderstanding on the author's part. The intent seems to be to prevent somebody from profiting from the project, but it puts the project into a gray area, where it is not clear if it is meant to prevent inclusion in eCS (which could be argued to be non profit), or if it is meant to prevent General Motors (for example) from using it to make a profit by using eCS with QSINIT. Either way, it makes QSINIT mostly useless, and therefore irrelevant because no business, or government, can take the chance on what a judge might think about it. Then again, the license is probably unenforceable anyway. Oh yeah, you can play a couple of games with it, but I am not too sure why anybody would want to do that. I can see the possibility of adding a "standard interface" to the machine, making things like video adapters, or disk drives, more compatible to the eCS drivers (much like what virtual machines do).

DMT which is installed by eCS2.1+ and run during boot also helps quite a bit in keeping cruft out of the ini files. I do find that it occasionally locks up here when running, probably a timing issue.

DMT definitely helps, but it is not a complete answer (I think DMT could be a lot more aggressive, but I am not an expert).

I haven't had it lock up, although that may be happening on one of my little used boot systems now. It stops booting at DMT, and I haven't had the time to sort it out, yet.

One thing that DMT does do, is confuse CLEANINI. If CLEANINI only prints a few lines, and stops, close CLEANINI, create something on the desktop, delete whatever it is, then, CLEANINI will do it's thing.

started from SVN4250  is no more compatible with alternative loader

I assume you mean that it is not compatible with QSINIT. Until that gets fixed, I have lost interest in OS/4.

needs patched acpi.psd

Another good reason to avoid OS/4, IMO.

Also don't forget you can use the CPU Monitor under Programs --> Utilities to turn off (and back on) processors rather then editing config.sys and rebooting.

That works, if you don't use a recent ACPI. If you do use ACPI, it will turn off the extra processors until the load gets high enough that ACPI turns them back on. The monitor will change that, until ACPI decides to change it again.

Quote
I just tried and what I noticed was that after starting the cpu monitor program it defaulted to disabling core 2 thru 4 even though they were enabled before I started the program

In fact, it is quite likely that ACPI had turned off  processors 2 through 4, and that is what the monitor found when it started. The monitor program is not compatible with ACPI (or, it could be argued that ACPI is not compatible with the monitor).

I expect that it was "INIs". I use CLEANINI, and FPOS, most of the time (about every other week, but that may depend on how many files you look at, using the WPS). I use this as CLEANIT.CMD:
Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
W:
CD \UTILITY\CLEANINI55
If exist CleanINI.LOG DEL CleanINI.LOG
Cleanini /c /multipass /Restart /remote:delete
pause
W:\Utility\fpos080\FPOS.EXE

The programs are on the W: drive, in the directories as shown. You would need to change that to match your system.

I got CLEANINI from: http://home.t-online.de/home/C.Arnold/download/cleanini55.zip and FPOS from: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/wps/fpos080.zip.

I also run CHECKINI /C about once per year. Do it multiple times, until it no longer asks for a restart.

For FPOS, I sort by path, then select everything including the root of the DESKTOP (You can select the DESKTOP sub directories but I suggest not doing that), then I do File-> Save now, and agree to let it do it. I suggest a reboot after that, for two reasons: One is to get the changes saved, and the other is to be sure that it will still boot (did I mention do a BACKUP first?). Then, I usually do another boot, to do a desktop archive.

So - is there a way to configure something in/with Virtual PC to just let it use one core even if the Switch above is not in config.sys?

C:\OS2\EXECMODE.EXE should do that, but you may need to do all of the EXEs and DLLs for virtual PC. Just do EXECMODE.EXE with no parameters for help.

Note, that it will still use all of the processors, but only one at a time after setting it for SP mode (Single Processor).

FWIW, VBox (version 1.6.1, for OS/2) uses all 4 cores, without a problem (for me). There are some other limitations.

Your vision in replacing PM would need way more than all current available OS/2 developers even if you count that one which have the knowledge but decided to not support this platform anymore for various reasons. Visions are fine. But if they are so much above what can be handled in a realistic time frame they are counterproductive.

I agree. When you have a row boat, and 100 people want to cross the river, it may be possible to get them across, two, or three, at a time. If a freight train comes along, and wants to cross the river, guess what will happen if you try it.

'Nuff said.

I'm sorry to hear about the webcam issue with the USB driver package.

Well, it took two tries, but it works now. Apparently the fix will be in the next release.
