Title: USB 3 - ArcaOS - Hardware Reports
Post by: Martin Iturbide on June 12, 2020, 02:07:13 pm
Hi

Since ArcaOS 5.0.5 was released with USB 3 support, I would like to update the reported hardware lists on the OS2World wiki.

Please let me know if you hardware is on the OS2World wiki, or if you have any new hardware you want to report with ArcaOS 5.0.5.

Here are the links:
- Laptops/Notebooks (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Laptop_Computers)
- Desktop (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Desktop_Computers)
- Motherboards (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards)

Just post your feedback here, or contact me directly.

Regards

Hi Martin,

the new xHCD USB3 driver is working on my TP X250. However I experienced performance issues with my mouse, when using the X250 in the docking station.

Greetings from Potsdam/Germany,
Mike

Hi Martin,

the usbxhcd driver works well on a thinkpad w520 laptop, with Arca kernel. But with os4 kernel the complete usb stack 12.5 and 12.6 will not work anymore. You see none of the usb devices with this versions; version 12.4 works well with the os4 kernel

best regards
Bernhard

Hi Martin,

You can update the MSI A320M Pro-VD Plus to all the USB 3 ports and the USB 2 ports that hang off the USB 3 controller and the VIA USB 2 ports are now working.    Not sure about speed though.

My  ASUS Prime B350M-A and Prime A320M-K also have all the USB 3 and USB 2 ports working.  Again not sure about speed.

Regarding speed of the USB 3 ports.  I don't have any USB 3 sticks to test with but my CH-326U3S SATA Hard disk dock (USB 3 with USB 3 hub) does move files to/from the HD faster.

Hi Martin,
The sound on the stack is crumpled. The problem is manifested if loaded more than one processor. The problem is present in all stacks of version 12.x.

Thanks for the feedback, I had updated what I can on the wiki.

Mike K: I had included on the X250 page your report about USB 3.x. I will appreciate if you can post the pci.exe report with the USB 3x turned on inside the BIOS (like it is right now).

Bernhard: I dont have the thinkpad w520 reported on the OS2World wiki. I will create a page for it. Can you please provide me the Hardware Report from pci.exe of your machine (lsusb is also welcome) (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Extracting_Hardware_Information_from_ArcaOS_and_OS/2).

Ivan: I updated MSI A320M Pro-VD Plus. Did you got some time to also test the audio of this mainboard?

Ivan: ASUS Prime B350M-A, also updated with USB 3.x.

Ivan: I don't have the Asus Prime A320M-K reported. I will create a page for it. Can you please share the pci.exe report?

Matt: I just updated the wiki page to reflect USB correctly. It was only to change the icon is just changing "image:nope.gif" to "image:Check.gif" on the table line.

Igor: If the USB sound driver got broken it would be good to validate it a little bit with other users (device, HardwareID, driver versions) and open a ticket to Arca Noae. Just let's not confuse things with Lars' USB Drivers, or specify in detail the combination of drivers not working.

Thanks to all for your help.

The USB audio, that gets installed, is the older AN version, that doesn't work (well, it makes noise). Use E:\CID\SERVER\ARCAPKG\USBAUD2.WPI (E: is the drive where you mount the installer ISO, or DVD), and it will probably work.

Hi Martin,
I use TI PCM2704.
Lars drivers work great with this hardware and in any configuration.
The error occurs when installing the 12.x kit from Arca. At the moment, I checked version 12.06 and
audio driver from version 12.06. I see a problem in the fact that USB 12.x drivers do not work correctly in a multiprocessor system.
If there is 1 processor in the system (either only one is present, or the rest are not loaded or stopped) - everything works
correctly.

Thanks Bernhard.

I just updated the page. "Lenovo Thinkpad W520 (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_Thinkpad_W520)"

Just as a little note, you seems to have your "pcidevs.txt" outdated, that is why the PCI.EXE report gives you some many unknown. But your report was good for me since I was able to search for the devices and find its name.

I'm attaching an updated "pcidevs.txt", it can be fun also if you can generate the report without dock and also with the dock to see the difference :)

My Thinkpad 25-2, based on a Thinkpad T480 (I build my own Thinkpad based on a T480 with the Palmrest, Keyboard, Touchpad etc. from the Thinkpad 25, all the inside electronic is a T480 with 32 GB RAM, Nvidia MX150, 2 TB SATA SSD etc. USB Hardware see Screenshot; unfortunately sound is not working so far, have to dig there):

USB 3 Driver work very well. USB DVD is working, USB DisketteDrive is working.

PCI.EXE attached.

Well Done!

I successfully booted a USB stick with ArcaOS 5.0.5 on a Lenovo E490 - unfortunately the drives all have GPT partition tables so I couldn't actually install it, but mouse, etc worked - couldn't check sound as it was only at the install screen.

Sigurd. Nice, you made a custom Thinkpad Retro. I will make a page for it with your report. Do you still have the original "Lenovo ThinkPad 25 - Retro (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_25_-_Retro)", or it was used for your custom Thinkpad? If you still have the original one I can use the pci.exe report to complete the HardwareID of it.

Paul: Can you run the PCI.exe and generate the report on the USB flash? lsusb report would be also nice, but I think it will be harder since some DLLs may be missing on the installer boot  image to make it run.

The error occurs when installing the 12.x kit from Arca. At the moment, I checked version 12.06 and
audio driver from version 12.06. I see a problem in the fact that USB 12.x drivers do not work correctly in a multiprocessor system.
Hello Igor
You can try to kill ACPIDAEMON.exe with top.exe or similar tool. Or rem in config.sys acpidaemon.exe. And test.

Thank you for the idea. I tried - it didn’t work. I updated ADCI to the latest version 3.23.13 and stopped the ACPIDAEMON.exe. But the sound is still torn when loading multiple processors.

Hi Martin,

thanks, but the Original T25 is for sale now and therefore OS/2 is already deleted. I think it does not make much sense to make special side for the T25/2 as it is the only available "unikat" around. Others did the same as me, but with differenzt T480 hardware (i.e. no Touchscreen). It might make sense to make a page for the T480, as the T25/2 is almost one. But there are so many things today not working or limited, that this may make no sense either (i.e. only 1 GB RAM visible, no Sound etc.).

By the way please do not wonder, I deleted my ArcaOS Channel on Youtube as well as I do not have the time nor motivation to keep it going on.

Thanks for your ongoing support for OS/2-eCS-ArcaOS!

All the best!

Sigurd

Thanks Sigurd.

I created a page for ThinkPad T480. (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T480).
Please let me know if you can let me know the missing things on "General Specs". Or anything you can add.

I was wondering, since it is a modern hardware, which USB 3 is the one working, since it recognize two devices:
- Intel Sunrise Point-LP USB 3.0 xHCI Controller    8086:9D2F
- Intel JHL6240 Thunderbolt 3 USB 3.1 Controller (Low Power) [Alpine Ridge LP 2016]    8086:15C1
Is that like some USB ports are the Sunrise and some other are the Thundebolt USB 3? Are both working on the T480? I don't know how this new hardware operates with Thundebolt.

Also, a lsusb report will be interesting to know the webcam hardwareId and any other USB internal things.

Quebopeep

http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/quebopeep.html (http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/quebopeep.html)

Manufacturer: Lenovo
Model: ThinkCentre M93p Tower
RAM: 8 GB
Hard drive: 500 GB SATA
USB 3.0 controllers: 1
USB 2.0 controllers: 2

USB 3.0 works on all ports, and with mass storage and audio. However, all computers seem to suffer from problems with hubs, KVM and other devices, and once problems occur, USB drivers get confused and then mouse, keyboard and mass storage do not work reliably. I thought I'd post this up here. I plan to submit a bug to Arca Noae, but feel free to post more information if you use hubs or KVM. Bugs are not limited to this computer.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices. USB 2.0 Mass storage device work with USBXHCD.SYS disabled.

I am using a cheap Aimos 4 port USB/HDMI KVM switch between 2 Linux boxes, my old Warp 4 box and the ArcaOS test machine.  No problems at the moment.  It uses a single connection USB cable which works with AOS on a USB 3 port.

I also have an Atolla CH-326U3S USB 3 external SATA docking station wit a 2 port hub built in.  It also works but the one annoying thing is that it has to be powered up for the hub to work since it relies on its external power supply rather than being powered from the computer USB port.

I am using a KVM from AirLink 101 for Keyboard and mouse with 1 PS/2 port on each computer and a splitter cable for the mouse & keyboard.  The Arca 5.0.5 USB 3 is working fine on my 2 machines.  I have a separate HDMI splitter for video as the new MBs don't have VGA outputs that work for me.  The HDMI shifts automatically when I turn on a different computer, but also has a small remote.  Very happy with Arca!

Everything works sometimes with my IOGear KVM, which is the same model line used by the developer. I suspect the intermittent nature of the failures make it harder to debug. I'm still gathering information on it. I don't have a second KVM to test with, which might help.

Hi Neil,

Are you sure it isn't a dry joint in the KVM?  Maybe it would pay to get a cheap one from Amazon to test.
Title: Re: USB 3 - ArcaOS - Hardware Reports
Post by: Neil Waldhauer on June 27, 2020, 02:01:22 am
Looking at the reviews, this KVM is an emulated one, so it will have some problems emulating my real keyboard and mouse. I use a really odd mouse to help with an injury I had a few years ago. Cheap KVM have different defects having to do with machines coming up without mouse, keyboard or video when booting with focus on another machine.

Taking the KVM out of the picture, USBMSD is fairly reliable, but occasionally doesn't recognize media. Mouse and keyboard work fine plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

I'm hesitating to file a bug. I want to come up with meaningful scenarios to reproduce bad behavior. Having the same hardware as the developer puts me ahead in that respect. If I can make it fail reliably on my hardware, it will probably reproduce on his hardware.

It's a pity that USB 11.17 and also Lars builds worked so well on this hardware -- it sets high expectations. That is also one nice thing about the M93p series -- real USB 2.0 hardware in addition to real USB 3.0 hardware.

I don't know if you use sysbench software. I plugged a USB stick into a USB 3.0 port and got 64 Disk I/O marks. An ordinary hard disk gets 805. I wonder if it should be that slow?

Jul 29, 2020 update: I plugged in a new USB 3.0 stick and get 209 Disk I/O marks. The other stick must be USB 2.0.

No, it shouldn't be that slow, but USB sticks are mostly garbage, and most of the cheap ones won't be anywhere near as fast as USB 3 is designed for (I have a couple that don't run any faster than USB2 sticks in windows 10 too). You need the expensive sticks, with high data rates, and even then they probably won't run at USB 3 design speeds. I get the most consistent, and fastest speed, using a HDD enclosure with USB 3. I don't have a SSD to try in it, but that should be even faster. I haven't measured the speed with SysBench, so I can't give exact numbers.

I also find that different controllers impact the speed. The best one, that I have, is a SUPAHUB brand, which has a Renesas chipset (I got it at Amazon). In fact I now have two of them, and they seem to be very good. I also have one that is a cheap generic thing, branded as Fresco Logic. It does not have any way to add additional power, and it is easily overpowered (it powers off) because the PCIe socket cannot supply enough power for it (at least on the two systems where I have tried it). When it does work, it seems to perform okay.

One other thing, is that the A type connectors can fail to connect to USB 3, and it may be running with the USB 2 controller, at USB 2 speeds (USB 3 controllers have two controllers, one for USB 3, and another for USB 1.x and 2.x - both are operated by the USBXHCD.SYS driver). Those connectors need to be close to perfect, to avoid connection problems, and it is very difficult to determine what connection it is actually using. Interestingly, they can also fail to connect to the USB 2 controller, which only matters if you are using an external USB 3 hub, or a USB 2 device.

It is also likely that the USBXHCD.SYS driver is still loaded with debug code, so there is some hope that it will get better, eventually.

Hi Neil, as Doug says, many sticks are garbage, though that number seems extra low. Have you tested it on a USB2 port?
Here, a 32 GB sd card that seems like one of my faster sticks (it is plugged into a stick like adapter) gives 177 Disk IO marks and a 8GB stick gives 197 IO marks. Both plugged into USB2 ports.
One problem with Sysbench is it doesn't seem to like really low seek times and doesn't give IO marks for my ram disk or SSD, leaving the access time showing dashes. The 8GB stick gives .8 ms seek times, giving a higher mark then the sd card (18ms), which actually has 33% faster transfer speeds (33MB/s vs 24MB/s)

Quebopeep

Thanks Neil, I was hoping for you to jump into this thread. I'm creating a wiki page for the "Quebopeep", if you can share the pci.exe and lsusb.exe reports I would appreciate it.
Also if you can report any other USB3 experience with the rest of you machines, so I can update the wiki pages.

Regards

The pci dump for Quebopeep (Lenovo ThinkCentre m93p tower) is attached.

The lspci only shows my mouse and keyboard, so I didn't bother with it.

The best I can say is that USB 3.0 12.06 works partially. USB 2.0 12.06  is working great if USB 3.0 driver is not loaded. I'm not sure that this is explained in "known issues" in the readme.

Phenobopeep

I am an Arca Noae reseller, and I have a few computers available for sale. This is one of them. I thought I'd report on the behavior of the ArcaOS 5.0.5 installation and USB 3.0.

http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/phenobopeep.html (http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/phenobopeep.html)

Manufacturer: Lenovo
Model: ThinkPad T450s
Screen: 14.0 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
Weight: 3.5 pounds
WiFi: Travel Router
USB 3.0 controllers: 1
USB 2.0 controllers: 1

USB 3.0 works on all ports for mouse and keyboard. Mass storage does not work with USB 3.0 driver. However, this computer (and many others) seem to suffer from problems with hubs, KVM and other devices, and once problems occur, USB drivers get confused and then mouse, keyboard and mass storage do not work reliably. I thought I'd post this up here.

USB 3.0 can be enabled in BIOS. If it is disabled, and the USBXHCD.SYS driver is not loaded in config.sys, the Mass storage works quite well.

I can operate with USB 3.0 Enabled. The Dock and the KVM, and mouse and keyboard work. Only Mass storage does not work in this case. In normal work, I do not use USB mass storage devices, so I didn't notice at first.

I still have not opened the bug report, but when I do, I will announce it in this forum.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices. USB 2.0 Mass storage device work with USB 3.0 disabled in BIOS.

Strobopeep

USB 2.0 controllers: 1

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 has disappointing results for this laptop. The USB 3.0 support support for Mass Storage is not curently working. With the USB 3.0 Enabled setting in BIOS enabled, mouse and keyboard do not work. USB 2.0 support is not working, either. Neither driver supports the dock.

USB driver version 11.17 works well, including mass storage, mouse, keyboard, KVM and dock.

I have not opened the bug report, but when I do, I will announce it in this forum.

Thanks Neil for sharing.

Just something, on the Strobopeep pci.exe report I don't see the USB 3.x listed. I see two EHCI listed, can it be some mistake with PCI.exe?

You may also want to update usb.ids  (http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids)to get a better descriptions of the USB device, but I already search for those and I added it to the wiki page. (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T540p)

Thanks

I am posting a revised set of files for Strobopeep.

The earlier files are correct for the BIOS setting USB 3.0 = disabled, which is needed to run the USB 2.0 drivers. So a BIOS setting changes the PCI device list. But I'm sure you knew that already.

LSUSB ID list was missing before, so I included it again. But this time, I changed how it plugged in. For now, the exact relationship of USB hubs appears to change the list of USB devices that are attached.

This time, BIOS is set to USB 3.0 = Auto. This at least gives me intermittent USB mouse and keyboard support while the laptop is docked.

A laptop in a dock attached to a KVM is apparently a very complex USB situation. Enough things work that I'm pretty sure all hardware is working, just intermittently with our drivers.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices. USB 2.0 Mass storage device work with USB 3.0 disabled in BIOS.

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 is installed. With the USB 3.0 Enabled setting in BIOS enabled, mouse and keyboard work, even with KVM. Support for Mass Storage is not currently working. With USB disabled in BIOS, USB 2.0 support is working with Mass Storage, mouse, keyboard and KVM. USB Uninterruptible Power Supply is working well.

Audio, Video, DVD-RW all work well. Brubopeep also has optional PS/2 ports, Parallel port and PATA (IDE ATAPI) support available.

Jul 29, 2020 update: USB is working nicely with USB 3.0 mass storage devices. USB 2.0 Mass storage device work with USBXHCD.SYS disabled.

USB 3.0 controllers: 1
USB 2.0 controllers: 1

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 is installed. With the USB 3.0 Enabled setting in BIOS on Auto, mouse and keyboard sometimes work, even with KVM. Support for Mass Storage similarly sometimes is working. With USB 3.0 disabled in BIOS, USB 2.0 support is working with Mass Storage. Mouse, keyboard and KVM work sometimes.

Normal operation of the laptop does not require USB. The built-in mouse and keyboard are not USB.

This is a small laptop. There is no support for the built-in WiFi. I use a travel router connected to the Ethernet port. To me, the travel router has more and better capability than XWLAN. The router uses GL.inet software controlled by a web interface that runs just fine in Firefox.

Arca Noae USB driver stack 12.06 is installed. Mouse and keyboard work, even with KVM. Support for Mass Storage sometimes is working, but generally not satisfactory. Bug report not yet submitted. Update (July 24: I tested again with a 2 TB external USB hard drive, and it is working pretty well. USB sticks are less certain to work)

This is a tower computer with optional PS/2 and Parallel ports. ArcaOS installs easily from DVD. Audio is working on Adapter 0.

Hi Neil,

I think I am seeing a trend here.  All your computers have Intel processors and all have problems with USB 3.  All my computers have AMD Ryzen processors and do not have problems with USB 3.  Maybe others in the forum could confirm or deny that observation.

Have you tried a computer with an AMD Ryzen processor (I don't think Lenovo makes one unless it is a lower powered unit with the older A series CPUs)?

Arca Noae will fix all of the bugs I noted in due time. I need to supply them with appropriate bug information. Note that they aren't even accepting bug reports on the preview release unless it's on ArcaOS 5.0.5.

Note that USB does work on every machine I offer.

I haven't seen any demand for an AMD system from Blonde Guy thus far. I don't have anything against AMD.

Thank you Neil.

I had included your computers on the wiki, under "Desktop Computer (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Desktop_Computers)".

Everybody is welcome to post more reports of their mainboard, laptop or desktop. (or anything else that can run ArcaOS ) :)

Awesome News !!

FYI: Here it is the Arca Noae announcement. (https://www.arcanoae.com/usb-driver-package-version-12-07/)

I will check it also with my Asus mainboard, since I was also experiencing mouse/keyboard issues with Intel USB 3.
Please, the guys that were reporting issues with USB 3 on Intel on their machines, give it a try to see if something improves and please report back.
