Why would I want ArcaOS 5.1 if the 5.07 version I have does all that I want - it even runs on my Ryzen third generation processor and motherboard.
It would have to have some impressive improvements to make me want to change and if so what are they?
Change my mind.
-
Hi
I don't want to change nobody's mind you are free to take your own choices in life, and I respect that. There are people that have some old hardware where OS/2 Warp 4 or eComStation is running fine, and they do not have the need to update.
On the other hand, I want to use ArcaOS 5.1, because I want to try the UEFI support on some laptops that does not have Compatibility Mode on the UEFI BIOS.
Since this is an small community I prefer to use the latest release so Arca Noae will not spend resources supporting older versions at the same time of the newer/mainstream one, but for I have hear, they will support the 5.0.x branch for some time.
But maybe it will change your mind that with the UEFI mode in ArcaOS 5.1, it will allow you to have a nice HD Boot Logo when you start your machine ;D ;D ;D .
I think it will be useful for you to check the "changelog" once ArcaOS 5.1 is released and see if there is something that gets your attention.

There's better DOS and WinOS2 support if that matters to you. It will be available in various languages if that matters to you. And the stuff Martin mentioned. Other then that, if 5.0.7 works for you, stick with it, might even be a 5.0.8 eventually as fixes happen.
-
Hi Martin,
Sorry if I appeared abrupt but I was just trying to get a discussion going about the invisible product. It would have been better if they had kept quiet about it and only made an announcement when it was ready to ship.
Hi Dave,
That is the type of information I am looking for - thanks.
-
Ivan, I sort of disagree with that perspective. It is a good thing to create anticipation for a new product.Meaning sales will be good. What is bad in saying it will be out in a few weeks and it being months instead. But then I know having worked IT some things go insanely wrong and it goes that way for a time until someone gets the fix in. Arca Noae wants to be able to support the new product and continue to support the old one. This is admirable. I myself have been at the mercy of things becoming unsupported suddenly. It is a pain not to mention expensive.
-
Eugene, My experience from over 30 years in engineering (now retired for 20 years) was you didn't announce a product until you had it ready to go out the door, then you pulled out all the stops and pressed down on the loud pedal.
-
I agree with you 100% ivan! I'm not going to replace my machines just so I can claim I,m using UEFI, especially now that you seem to have RYZEN processors working without problems. 5.1 is starting to look like a myth!
-
I gave up using Intel processors when AMD produced their 486 processor. Since then I have tried to keep up with their processor evolution, hence my using the Ryzen third gen PRO 4350G - the G indicated an included graphics processor which means I don't have to mess about with expensive graphics cards which gain nothing with OS/2 or ArcaOS.
-
I don't think its wrong for Arca Naoe to say they are working on a new operating system version, or what features it will have. But I don't want them to announce that it is nearly out. That kind of announcement is pretty discouraging to re-sellers.
By the way, I'm posting from the "mythical" 5.1. If you need GPT or UEFI, this is a good change. If you don't, ArcaOS 5.0 should be fine.
I guess it's the same with the new browser. No one knows when a stable version will come out. I love the blow-by-blow of trying to build it, and even to move to a newer version, but I don't need a prediction of when the hangs and other problems will be solved. I just need to know when to press the update button.

I completely second this assertion of yours. I have seen all kinds of gigantic failures in the past years, from the Sinclair QL to Apple Lisa, NeXT and other "next big things" which should have revolutioned the computing world but were announced too early, or were too different from the advertised product.
I am following the discussions here and am eager to be able to update my ArcaOS distribution, but having almost zero spare time it's pretty much difficult for me even to fire up a Virtualbox session, let alone installing ArcaOS on a bare metal machine (I have almost five dual core / i3 machines which need just some RAM and a HDD to work...).

That's lucky - you won't get any predictions from me on when the Qt6 builds will be stable. Fortunately, I'm doing this in my spare time - not for a living - so whether I make progress or not doesn't really have any consequences.

Hi,
I just got 5.1 installed on my laptop and install and everything went fine. While trying to update from the command line or APM I get a lot of python dependency problems? Is this normal? I have not seen this happen of previous versions.

Rick

If using YUM to install updates, then no I have not seen any errors.
-
Hello Rick and others!
This is a very common problem with an easy fix!
First, there was only Python2, which is EOL since years.
Now we have Python3 also.
Yum stuff requires Python2.

and
https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=3545 (https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=3545)
Select Python2 (2.7) and Python3 packages and one of the two Python unversioned packages (I suggest the one which sets the newer Python as default) and install them in one rush.
After that, everything will fall into place.
This is a known, but yet undocumented issue with the packaging (not with ANPN).

Greetings,
I am almost there with my setup.. I have noticed this error on boot, it doesnt stop the boot and everything appears normal just wondering what it is and if I should fix it?
F320101: ERROR: F32 VERSION (5.0.5.R234) DIFFERS FROM CACHEF32 VERSION (5.0.4.R2... I didnt get the rest of it but you get the gist.

That would be produced by the FAT32 IFS and shouldn't happen on an install, and perhaps you should open an issue as it is likely a problem at Arca Noae.
Once the install is finished, try upgrading the FAT32 driver, first with the one on the ISO to see if the error is repeated.
I think there is a newer one available at your subscription page, I have

I did the update from downloads page which is what started the error, It looks like the cachef32 driver didn’t update along with it ?

Looks that way. Try again?

That did it... I figured out what happened. When that update installs in modifies config.sys however after I did the restore on this machine I restored my saved config.sys which did not include the change.
Duh!

Greetings,
Do any of you know what MSGAPI32 is? After restoring my software post 5.1 upgrade, throws a msgapi32 error and I cannot seem to get around it? I have reinstalled the software and just used backed up data.

Hi Rick
Possibly something related to early os/2 messaging software, see http://annex.retroarchive.org/cdrom/smsw-modmad-2/MAXIMUS/index.html and scroll down to sqpck141.zip which contains the dll file of that name.
Whether it is related...

Did any of you got migration issue?

Hello Remy
Here in my Thinkpad T14s worked fine too. It has UEFI enabled and even make it easy now to dual boot with Windows 11.
Remy, do you want to give it a try with us? Post your laptop/computer model in a new thread and let's see if we can help you.
Do you want to upgrade your existing 5.0.x? or a fresh install?
Just in case the manual (https://www.arcanoae.com/wp-content/uploads/wiki/ArcaOS51_InstallationGuide.pdf) says "In addition, it is not possible to upgrade from a traditional BIOS installation to a UEFI installation."
In that case you will need to backup everything and make a fresh install.

I already posted my desktop config in the past.
It is a desktop and upgrading my ArcaOS.
AOS installed on multivolume C: W: (JFS)
E: used as recovery partition (JFS)
all partitions where chkdsk and free of error.
(2 more logicals partitions, one NTFS shr with windows in RO mode and one FAT32 shr with windows in R/W)
Have to add disk exclude under AHCI to exclude M.2 onboard disk with win7 (this works well and in place since a long time)
I'm upgrading my ArcaOS operating system.
Start on DVD allowing config.sys update to exclude my M.2 onboard disk
The upgrade function is stopping with ERROR message after reboot following first step (well done)
I use legacy (traditional) bios for my boot drive, usb and cd (upgrading in legacy mode despite both mode exist)
The upgrade function worked well under 5.0.x
Strange.
Found a few error into logs:
Copying file: Z:\var\log\diskutil.log --> C:\var\log\DISKUTIL.LOG: FAILED (error SYS0003: The system cannot find the path specified.)
Copying file: Z:\var\log\ao_upgd.log --> C:\var\log\ao_upgd.log: FAILED (error SYS0003: The system cannot find the path specified.)
and
Copying file: Z:\DATBAS_Z.INI --> C:\sys\install\WARPIN\DATBAS_C.INI: FAILED (error SYS0003: The system cannot find the path specified.)

You should't believe everything you read. Months ago, I posted a package to convert from BIOS to UEFI. The process is trivial and fully license-compliant. If you need it, do a search of this forum.
-
No UEFI conversion here.
UEFI not enabled for USB, nor CD and nor for ArcaOS HD
Just a migration/update like I did it under previous releases
-
My S1P1 ticket not taken yet!
I hope ArcaOs is going to check quickly to be able to boot and use again with my ArcaOs system
Booting win7 since the problem.

ArcaOs team working on.
Could some of you do a migration with Injoy firewall installed ?
Last message I have before the error message:
Installing IBM TCP/IP applications...
-
Hi Remy,
You should return your protocol and other files that Injoy firewall changes back to original so the injoy drivers and settings are removed.
You will find the uninstall command file in the documents somewhere, not near my server at present so cant check what it was.
The uninstall procedure will not delete any files, simply return the ini files back to normal. After you upgrade ArcaOS, simply rerun the install file.
Same procedure applies if you want to run mpts to change network drivers etc.

Hi Ian,
I uninstalled IJF drivers, checked config.sys and was well uninstalled
I run the intaller but again, went into error at same process time.
-
Always in error.
I tried to reduce the ini file which is big but after run checkini as well cleanini, the size dropped by about 20k
The remaining size is near 2.9MiB
Any idea how to lower the ini file size (without installing all products nor do a new installation)

Hi !
Because 5.1 migration failes, I decided to give a try to 5.0.8 migration i never did.
The 5.0.8 migration ended successfully !
Compared to 5.1, the migration seems having same process until end of phase 2 but then, 5.1 migration has additional TCPIP and TCPIP Applications steps ending with the error message.
Those having done 5.1 migration, do you remember having gone through tcpip processes after phase 2 (following first reboot) ?
Regards
Rémy
-
Problem found and after correction, migration to 5.1 was ok.
Migration went into error due it doesn't recognize parameter metric on the ifconfig line while it well handle the ifconfig entry command
(I added a line in the past to change some specification on my interface 0 using the ifconfig command into the setup.cmd - something which should work)
-
Hi Remy,
After all your fun and games is there any advantage going to 5.1? At the moment I am quite happy with 5.0.7 that is working without problems on my 30 inch 2560x1600 monitor.

Well, it seems to be more stable (may be better responsiveness but this is a subjective value)
Once the migration issue found, migration was fast.
currently, I'm satisfied
note: if arcamap was used under 5.0.x, this one is no more available under ArcaOS 5.1 (replaced by samba). I took my saved copy with its config file used in a local network only and it works.
