Hi
I want to create this thread to get some help on finding some old software for OS/2 that it is missing.
I don't have any attachment to this software, but since I'm reorganizing Hobbes and checking some archives sites, I want to see if it possible to find some old software to have it properly organized and archived.

Hello.
I want to start with:
TopBar , by Antony T. Curtis, it went by the name "topbr036.zip".
Here it is some info:

Hello Martin, I still have a demo-version of Pixel in my filebase:
http://cyberia.dnsalias.com/cgi-bin/maxfind.exe?Action=Search&SearchStr=pixel521.zip&DateButton=Month&DateStr=2023-06-15&MultiPage=0
The author describes his piece of software as "highly unstable" and this was really true.
Best, Harald
-
Thanks Harald. And also thanks for the software remark.

I don't know if this software can be considered abandon ware. At that time I had registered the software, but it never reached a level where it could have been used in an acceptable way.

I don't know if this software can be considered abandon ware. At that time I had registered the software, but it never reached a level where it could have been used in an acceptable way.
For what I know it was a public alpha software available for free download, and I'm not sure if it was ever fully released.

A little OT, but I feel it is worth.
What I'd love to see are the sources for X128 0.5, a rather working ZX Spectrum emulator. It was fairly good, albeit a little unstable.
Also - but alas, surely there will be no results: the sources for
- Notamusica (music engraving via TeX with an interesting object oriented GUI)
- MainActor /2 (the only video editor available for OS/2)

Unfortunately, what I can't find anywhere is VisualAge for Basic Version 1.5.
SoftMaker's DataMaker for OS/2 would also be interesting software. As would the project management software OPUS 2.0 or MGI PhotoSuite.
@Martin: Is there a way to get VisualAge for Basic for OS/2 free use permission from IBM? I think it's still a very viable solution for developing small programs quickly.

Hello
@Martin: Is there a way to get VisualAge for Basic for OS/2 free use permission from IBM? I think it's still a very viable solution for developing small programs quickly.
I had been only able to get formal permission from IBM to re-post print material (publications). I was not able to request the same thing for software, otherwise I would go to get Warp 4.52 as unsupported freeware first. ;D
VisualAge for Basic for OS/2 is abandoware, which does not mean it can freely distributed. But maybe it can show up on archive.org since public libraries has some exceptions in the US copyright law (108 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/108)). But that does not give me the right to republish the link or upload it to hobbes.
But I was wondering if version 1.5 was only a patch, or a full version (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/VisualAge_for_Basic)?. If it was a patch I will like to have it, so it can be uploaded to hobbes.

Hi Martin,
as far as I know, there were only full versions of VABasic.
-
I see Winworldpc has VABasic 1.1 for OS/2 and Windows
-
Hi Martin,
as far as I know, there were only full versions of VABasic.
No, IBM issued patches for VA Basic, for some reason it was only available from the website and not from any of their FTP sites and I lost my copies of the patches in a Partition Magic related incident in 2000, by that time IBM had taken down the website.
-
Ok, thank you for the information. I was subscribed to the IBM OS/2 and DOS ServicePac CDs at the time. Only the full version of version 1.1 was included here. Unfortunately, a 1.5 or a patch could not be found. At least not until mid 98, after which I canceled the subscription.
-
Hello. So, officially we are looking for the VABasic 1.5 patch for OS/2 that used to be publicly available on the IBM support Site.
If someone has the filename, dead link, or (more important) the file, please let me know.

There was a large 1.2 patch for both OS/2 and Windows before 1.5, even that would be better than nothing as it solved a lot of issues.
-
I have a Beta of VA Basic 1.2.7 for OS/2, but it is easily available at www.vetusware.com. No idea if it works, but the install does. Tried to find a version 1.5, but no luck. Perhaps it was released on developer connection CD's like this:
https://archive.org/details/IBMDevConR2V2
which has a load of interesting stuff from the waning days of IBM OS/2. 24 CD's to downlaod... maybe there are other editions that can be dug up too.
Regards,
P.S. - anybody know how many versions of these 'Release 2' DevCons were made? Seems there were 3 levels, 'Member', 'Premium' and 'Advanced', and only sent to subscribers who had a subscription at the time the DevCon was cancelled (in 1997).
-
Hmm, Devcon_12 has 'VisualAge for Basic v1.0' and 'VisualAge for BASIC Server V1.0 for OS/2 (IBM).
So I assume need a newer one.

first of all, big compliments for your great work and for the idea of finding missing software.
I can help a little
The two programs are apparently no longer available on the Internet. The links I know are no longer accessible. But I have local copies and have attached these.

I used filebar since it appeared on the Stardock Essential diskette. In runs under 3,0 prolly earlier, but you can use it in worlplace= as a replacement for pmshell. Its not resource hungry.

Close but no cigar:

Sadly, archive.org doesn't have the zip in store. Antony is still very much active. I have a feeling he would answer back promptly if reached out.
If you're lucky, he might have the source code on a zip drive or somethin' :-)
Trying to dig his second website, topbar was long gone - http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://cyberkinetica.homeunix.net/*

ATOK (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATOK) is commercial software; TTBOMK the Windows version is still sold but the OS/2 version was discontinued years ago. I'm pretty certain you won't find a legitimate copy anywhere except possibly the secondhand market (ebay or whatever), and even then I'd call it a long shot.

One of my useful pieces of software is Xact. It is written to make graphs, line, bar, etc. I have version 7. Version 8 came out when I could not afford it. Now that I have the funds, the company SciLab in Germany has closed shop. Since the company is gone, does anyone know if we can get the OS/2 version of Xact 8.0?
Thanks,
ME
-
I've been looking for a while, unfortunately there are only the demo versions to download. Would you archive version 7 for the community?
-
Hello Mike
I can try to find and contact the developers/owners of "Scilab GmbH, Hamburg". But I was not able to find the name of the people involved in that company. I think I found out that "Arnd Beissner", cause of a interview I found on the "OS/2 Warp Monthly Newsletter". If you have any other names of the "Scilab GmbH, Hamburg" I can give it a try.
I got this info:

If you're able to split the contents of the CD (OS/2 only) you can give it a shot at sending a ZIP package on the Internet Archive or other sources like that. I don't think Hobbes archive is a suitable solution, since we're still talking about a commmercial software with all that regards licensing and rights.

Dear OS/2 community, : )
I am looking for an OpenSSH client that runs on OS/2 Warp 3.
Currently installed are OpenSSH 4.0p1 and OpenSSL 0.9.7f (2025-03-22).
With this version I cannot connect to current SSHds with this anymore, as the KEX is too old, so client and server can't negotiate anymore.
It is still possible to connect to older SSHd versions, but I'd rather have current versions running.. ; )
I have tried [this one (https://www.hobbesarchive.com/?detail=/pub/os2/util/remote/OpenSSH_7-7p1r4.zip)] but this does not work on Warp 3, as it appers to require stuff that is not implemented. Hobbes comment also says this version is tested to run on Warp 4.52.
Question is, can I somehow update the KEX security stuff to keep running the old SSH version, or do I actually need a newer SSH version? And if so.. is there still one left that runs on Warp 3?
I'd like to thank you a lot for your time and efforts. : )
Mathias
