Title: Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen - 20T1
Post by: Martin Iturbide on December 07, 2023, 02:13:25 pm
Hello

I got my hands on a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen - 20T1 (20T1S0D400 - Intel i7-10610U CPU). I installed ArcaOS 5.1.0 (UEFI) and it is now booting in dual boot with Windows 11.

I'm still missing to play more with it but I found two things:

1) Trackpoint has an issue with AMouse driver. The trackpad works find and click fine. But on the trackpoint, if I click the right left mouse button, while my other finger is still on the trackpoint (possible making a light movement), it will produce a double click. Have you experienced that?

2) The machine does not has a visible ethernet port. But it recognized a Ethernet adapter (E1000B.os2)  (Intel Ethernet Connection (10) I219-LM / 8086:0D4E) on the install procedure. I installed it and it does not give any warning on boot. I have no idea if it is for an external USB-C Ethernet thing. Any ideas?

FYI: Here I'm writing the Hardware Review on the Wiki: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_Thinkpad_T14s_1st_Gen_-_20T1

My experience with Lenovo Thinkpad T14 was that it had an RJ45 Ethernet port. Perhaps all models do not have it. I had it before ArcaOS 5.1 came out, but after all the betas expired, so I did not take a testlog.

Congratulations, Martin.

How much RAM of the first 4 GB is visible to und usable by ARcaOS?

Thank you!

Hello.

About the Ethernet thing, this machine has a "Ethernet extension connector". I need to learn about that.

Sigurd, about the memory, I checked the reports very fast it was like 2GB, but let me check the report again and post back.

Thank you Martin,

2.3 GB ist a very good value compared to other mordern Laptops, all in all it is better compared what I usually get, but less than one would like to have/need for the "big" RAM Applications.

- Installation not possible on Thinkpad X1 carbon 10th Gen.

- each 1GB on Thinkpad T470 and T480, but both of those have discret Grafics, so may 1.5GB possilbe with only Chipset grafic.

Thanks again.

I think I found more about this issue. I think it is my hand palm pressing against the "mousepad" (Lenovo calls it "Trackpad"), if I raise my palm in a very uncomfortable way to don't touch it, the trackpoint left click works as expected everytime. In Windows I don't have this issue, I guess there is some software control to improve this issue. Maybe a workarround is to disable the "Trackpad" in the BIOS.

Please report back if you can disable the Touchpad in BIOS and if Trackpoint and associated (mouse)keys still work. Thanks.

Hello Andi

I disabled the "Trackpad" (mousepad) on the UEFI BIOS (Check picture), it was very simple.
The Trackpoint work fine now, the associated keys seems to be working. and I'm happy for the moment.

I was checking more about the Trackpoint/Trackpad on the Windows 11 partition. This device is ELAN branded, and what we are missing on ArcaOS would be the capacity of turn on/off the Trackpoint or Trackpad with software. On the Trackpad we are missing more features for settings, but the one that seems to do the trick here is the "Palmcheck" function on Windows (Check picture). Sadly we don't have it on ArcaOS.

Hello again.

HDMI video output works only if you select on the BIOS "Boot Display Device = External Display". This will show in my case the AN Boot Manager, ArcaOS loading and later the desktop. It will not show ArcaOS on the Thinkpad display at the same time. If you power off, disconnect the external display, and boot again, the video will show back on the Thinkpad display.

I guess this is good, I tested here with a monitor, but I think it will work with a projector, but not both screens at the same time.

Hello

Today I tried the webcam with Wim's "UVC Webcam Server (https://home.hccnet.nl/w.m.brul/webcam10/index.html)"

I run "webcam /n" to start the webcam, the webcam led lights up, (which it is good), but when I run "wmvideo /n" does not show any output.

I got this error on "webcam /n"

Quote
[C:\PROGRAMS\WebCam]webcam /n
started.
format:yuyv
 acquire webcam
 set configuration
 negotiate video format
 obtain video format
 commit video format
 set video alt interface
 starting iso video
/n server (video) On-Line.
[00000280]
obtain video error.

Hello

I completed the description of this machine on the OS2World wiki.
https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T14s_1st_Gen_-_20T1

I will try next to get the ethernet port cable to confirm if the network works. (ThinkPad Ethernet. Extension Adapter Gen 2 - 4X90Q84427)

Yes, that is the one I was looking for.

I am not sure what is the best way to tackle this. Why don't we start testing whether or not my latest development version works?

Run webcam and wmvideo (so without parameters) to test with named pipe.

Wim

I can notice that the Webcam lights turns on.

When I run wmvideo (no parameters) the application shows, but I get no video, Snapshot and Testshot menu does not do anything.

Thanks Martin,

So basically the same result. Now it is time to try and get some more information about what is going on. So I modified webcam.exe to do so when you specify an additional parameter.
With that parameter specified it will show some more debug information and it will create a webcam.bin file  containing video header data.

Just run webcam /* by itself and report back your results like you did before. Attach that webcam.bin file too.

Regards,
Wim

Hi Wim

I run webcam.exe /*

I'm attaching the console log and the bin file.
Just i detail I forgot to tell you before, the webcam.exe program keeps running, it does not quit automatically, I usually do the ctrl+c myself after a while of not reporting anything else on the console.

Thanks again Martin. This webcam actually contains both an "Integrated Camera" and an "Integrated IR Camera".
Scanning the USB descriptors by the webcam program resulted in setting up the "Integrated IR Camera" but no video data was obtained.
I suspect that by using webcam /m the "Integrated Camera" would be setup instead of the "Integrated IR Camera".

However I decided to change scanning the USB descriptors to always use the first camera rather than the last one.
So please test again with this version using webcam /* and report back like you did before.

Regards,
Wim

Thanks Wim

I'm attaching the BIN and log.

Appears that ObtainThread is working alright in so far that it scheduled all eight UsbStartIsoTransfer()s. Still error code [0000280] which means timeout error.

Perhaps the 3 seconds timeout value is just too short. Therefore I now changed it to wait forever. Please test and report again.

Regards
Wim

Thanks Martin,

After scheduling all eight UsbStartIsoTransfer(s) the ObtainThread now awaits forever signalling of their completion by the USB Host Controller Driver.
Apparently this signalling does not occur at all. Reason unknown. It seems to me that there is something wrong with the 12.14 USB Host Controller Driver.
Perhaps it is a good idea to plugin an external webcam to see whether or not  that webcam does indeed work well with the USB Host Controller Driver.

Wim

Hi Wim

Today I finally tried the "Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Logitech_C920_HD_Pro_Webcam)" that used to work on the past. The webcam camera lights up, but as you suspected I can not get video from it.

I tried the same "Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam" on a Thinkpad L420, with USBUHCD 12.14 (USB 2.0) and the devices worked you webcam10.zip (from your website) and "webcam-test-20240101.zip ".

Maybe it is an issue with USB 3.x.

Hello.

Going back to the network adapter of this machine, I got the special cable adapter to connect the Ethernet cable.  (PN: SC10P42354 (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/accessories-and-software/cables-and-adapters/cables-and-adapters_adapters/4x90q84427?orgRef=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F#)). I checked the cable on Windows 11 and it worked.

When I installed ArcaOS 5.1 it recognized the adapter with the E1000B driver.
It has the following HardwareID, 8086:0D4E which is listed on Arca Noae website (https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/multimac/).

But, I can not get network and I'm not good with Network troubleshooting. On boot, the device driver E1000B.OS2 (1.1.8 ) does not report any problem. The lights of the cable light up. But on the T14s I get no IP or DNS, so no ping.  On "NetWork adapters and Protocols" I have the E1000B driver and IBM TCPIP (0). Nothing else.

ping to 127.0.0.1 replies "no route to host".

What do you suggest me to troubleshoot this Ethernet adapter  and TCPIP ?

Regards

Hello.

On "DDNS Configuration" I get a "(MSG04) Configuration failed: DHCP client is not running" error.

So I run C:\MTPN\BIN\setup.cmd and it restarted the DHCP server and I got IP !!!!!
Seems that "DHCPSTRT -i lan0 -d 0 " did the trick.

DHCP client won't start again on my next boot, I need to find out how to turn it on in the config.sys.
