Title: VLC Crashes While Streaming
Post by: christech on June 12, 2024, 06:32:26 pm
Hey all,

I am trying to use VLC 3.0.19 to stream some IPTV. It loads the playlist and starts streaming but crashes and locks the system after a few seconds, has anyone else had this issue?

Hello christech

Do you have some IPTV sample that you can share to give it try?

NASA TV from YouTube works fine today on VLC (Media - Open NetworkStream)  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21X5lGlDOfg

Also found this free M3U8 that also seems to works fine on our VLC:

By the way I'm using VLC 3.0.20.

Regards

Does it work okay for other videos or is it just IPTV?

Local videos appear to work just fine. I have a 1Gb connection, so I think I can rule out a slow connection. For $hit$ and giggles I pulled the heatsink off the CPU, and surprise surprise the thermal paste had dried up.. going to fix that and see if it helps. This system has had other random issues. I checked the RAM, and it passes all tests. Will get back here in a few days after some more testing. I can play the 'Tears of Steel' video but it starts getting choppy after 30 seconds every time. The YouTube video does not play at all.

OK, let's get down to basics.

a) what processor?
b) what, if any, video card?  - that one depends on if the processor has a built in video or not.
c) how is the monitor connected -VGA, HDMI and so on?

I assume you are streaming off the net so have you checked external network consistency?  Mine has a tendency to drop out during times of maximum load because the main fibre is shared between 4 services.  I have seen my 1Gb connection drop to to below 500K at times.

So I cleaned up my system, re-applied thermal paste to the CPU and I have the same issue, even after swapping out my GPU. I previously had a FirePro 2270.

Current setup:
Xeon 2.79 GHZ
ATI FirePro W5000 - DVI connection

Still can't play YouTube video that Martin linked, the Tears of Steel video plays fine for 30s and then start getting glitchy. I have a Samsung SSD for the boot drive.

Do you have a firewall ? (give a try without it)
How long did you use the SSD (lot of writes on it ?). Last time you did a fstrim on it from under linux ?
