Title: Help ! How to: Installing MPlayer/2 !
Post by: Greggory Shaw on July 11, 2014, 02:11:35 am
I need help proofing an article for Os2world.com - Howto: Installing MPlayer/2

http://www.os2notes.com/os2mplayer2.html

1) Any additions needed.
2) Grammar and spelling.
3) Don't report any formatting errors, will fix last.
4) Does the Set statement for the codec dir needed anymore ?
5) Add to the Frequently_Asked_Questions sections
6) Add to the Tips sections

And FINALLY someone to add it to the Wiki for Martin, it's really a lot of work - a little help is wonderful sometimes !

Cheers

Greggory

Looking good. One thing I notice missing is any reference to fonts, how to specify which font to use. Not sure whether komh's build of MPlayer supports truetype fonts and whether it depends on mzfntcfgft. If nothing else there should be a reference to bitmapped fonts. See http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/fonts-osd.html (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/fonts-osd.html)

Thanks Dave ! Totally forgot about that, I'll add it in, yes to TT fonts:) I was fighting with that when playing DVDs. Trying to turn them off without success ?

Thanks Gregg. The article looks great.

My observations / doubts are:

1) On point "2.2 Install Codecs". Are the codecs on the same mplayer installation files, or do I have to download them somewhere else.

2) 1.5. I think it will be a good idea to upload "http://www.os2site.com/sw/mmedia/video/regionset.zip" also to hobbes, since not everyone has OS2site userID and password to download files.

3) 1.8. The testcase UNIAUD32 is no longer here: http://www.ecomstation.co.kr/komh/testcase/uniaud32_test.zip

4) Maybe you can add some screenshots, I like them ?  :)

5) On 1.9 References, you can always add the URL of the original project: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html

I haven't use MPlayer, so I think it is great article.

Before someone does that, the legalities of it need to be checked. I know that in 2003 it was illegal to change a players/video's region. I don't know what the status is currently, and as to how it got there I have no idea, honest, I didn't even notice it.

Any human person that wants access to os2site, check the top of the readme file, top left link of os2site.com's front page.

Strictly speaking, MPlayer is illegal in many countries as it includes dvdcss which allows breaking the encryption on that DVD that you just bought and in some countries watching your DVD on an unlicenced player is worse then physically stealing the DVD.
There are also patent issues with various codecs being patented. This is also true for various other programs that are on Hobbes such as LAME though generally the patent holders don't object to non-commercial use.

I also didn't even notice about the legality of it. I was only suggesting to have more access to the file. But it is up to hobbes to decide which files can they host.

So, I don't care taking back the Suggestion #2, maybe it is good enough on OS2Site.

Thanks Martin, and codecs are separate, see 1.2 for the link to download them.

I agree let Hobbes decide.

I'll have email him and see if current UNIAUD is Ok

Sure, but it's VIO

I'll add it, I have completed the list I used.

Martin here's the easy version for using MPlayer, it's based on my FirefireDD install script !

http://www.os2notes.com/os2mplayer.html

Tip: Remove the old unless AVI codec, it was driving me crazy, having to right clicking then select mPlayer just to play. So after removing the old codec MPlayer becomes the default player !

Hi Greggory,

Thought I would give this a try on my 4 core box - everything is OK except no sound output.

On checking, unimix does not show anything other than line playback and mic volume, yet systems sounds work.  Any ideas?

There's no 'Master Playback Volume or CD playback options' ?

That's strange my install script nor the guide changes anything. Do you get sound from playing PM123 or any other vid/music player ? If not then the driver is misconfigured.

If you do get sound from PM123 or other vid player then:

1) use the latest mplayer, earlier versions use different config options
2) make sure the 'config' file is in the \home\default\.mplayer\ directory
3) change ao=kai:dart  to  ao=kai:UNIAUD  or remove it

And that's about it, but it sounds like your driver, I have a dual-core /w ACPI with no problems :(

4) try the latest UNIAUD driver: download (http://www.ecomstation.it/ecsoft2/prog.php?progid=879&name=Uniaud%2C+Universal+Audio+Driver&sys=os2+ecomstation&language=en)

Or use my install script - http://www.os2notes.com/os2mplayer.html

The drivers are the latest as confirmed from your post.  Although we have had this machine for over 18 months this was the first time we tried to use sound on it - and that was only because it was up and running when I decided to try your how to and I couldn't be bothered to go to my office.

I can't get sound out of VLC or a CD in the CD drive using WarpCD player so I will have to investigate further to find the problem.  I have a memory of having to set various IOs on another box a couple of years ago, copy it and then load it at every boot of that machine - maybe that is what is needed here.  Anyway that is for another time - after 2 in the morning here so I think it is time to call it a day.

Thanks for your help.

...

Added the subtitle section.

And is at final rough draft thank goodness, took a lot longer then I thought it would. Any last minute suggestions or questions answered ?

I recommend using the install script, it sets everything up nicely ! Including associations.

Hi Ivan

No, just those two, though if I unimix -names list I get the attached list:

I did not know about the -names option for unimix; not sure how much use it is in comparison to :-

unimix -list > mixer.txt

which will show the names, control ids *and* the values in use.

Which of the currently available drivers are you actually using? - there is a bit of a choice on http://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/

What chipset/mixer is involved? - seems to me that some versions of uniaud work better than others with some hardware.
