Hi
Sometime ago I discussed a graphic representation (high level / Interpretation) of OS/2's architecture.
I putted it on EDM/2 : http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components)
Now I want to identify which files of OS/2 belongs each component. I'm stating with Presentation Manager here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager). At the end I want to identify the files for each component, OS/2 Kernel (as a package), PM , SOM, WPS and Control Program.
I will appreciate your feedback, since I'm doing this research almost blind and sometime Google does not have information about each OS/2 file :)
Regards
-
My first example is Presentation Manager. I had listed as files that belongs to OS/2's Presentation Manager this ones:
Name Comments
OS2SM.DLL OS/2 session manager dynamic link library.
PMATM.DLL PM Adobe Type Manager dynamic link library.
PMBIDI.DLL
PMCLIP.DLL
PMCTLS.DLL PM controls dynamic link library.
PMDDE.DLL
PMDDEML.DLL
PMDRAG.DLL DLL Forwarder. PM drag/drop dynamic link library.
PMGPI.DLL PM graphics programming interface dynamic link library.
PMGRE.DLL DLL Forwarder. PM graphics engine dynamic link library.
PMMERGE.DLL
PMMLE.DLL DLL Forwarder. PM multiline entry dynamic link library.
PMPIC.DLL PM picture dynamic link library.
PMPRE.DLL
PMSHAPI.DLL DLL Forwarder. PM shell APIs dynamic link library.
PMSHLTKT.DLL PM shell's dynamic link library.
PMSHELL.EXE Presentation Manager Shell Program.
PMSPL.DLL PM spooler dynamic link library.
PMUNIF.DLL
PMVDMP.DLL PM virtual DOS machine private dynamic link library
PMVIOP.DLL PM VIO calls private dynamic link library.
PMWIN.DLL DLL Forwarder. PM dynamic link library.
PMWINX.DLL
But I still need to know which other files belongs to Presentation Manager.

Hi
I don't know if someone knows what are this files to include a little description of it.
- PMCTL.MSG
- PMCTL.REP
- PMMRGRES.DLL
- PMVDMH.DLL
-
I'm also wondering if "SOFTDRAW.DLL" can be consider part of Presentation Manager. It is called by PMGRE.DLL and PMMERGE. And SOFTDRAW uses PMGRE.DLL and PMMERGE.DLL too.
-
Hi Martin
Sometimes you can open a file with a text editor to find out a little about the file:-
- PMCTL.MSG - contains what looks like error messages; probably for PMCTLS.DLL
- PMCTL.REP - contains what looks like the title
' P M C o n t r o l T e m p l a t e f i l e '
and is related to displaying messages from PMCTL.MSG
The text editor trick does not really help with DLL files though
- PMMRGRES.DLL - contains the current "window theme"; this url may be of interest http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm
- PMVDMH.DLL - I could only guess at this; and my guess would probably be wrong... :-)

Thanks Pete
I updated the page with the info you gave me.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components)
Now I have my doubts if PMWINX.DLL belongs to PM, since it references (calls) PMWP.DLL...uhm..
Regards
-
There exist forwarder DLLs to PMMERGE.DLL for compatibility with older OS/2 versions. Most likely you can be sure that DLLs starting with "PM" have an impact on PM.

strings is another command that is good for extracting text from a binary file, often best to pipe through a pager such as less, N:\OS2\DLL>strings pmwinx.dll | less
I think that pmwinx is part of the subsystem that IBM added to allow recompiling Win9x apps for OS/2 (Open32) which has evolved to Odin. It can be classified as PM and Open32. It's hard to compartmentalize some of this stuff as it serves multiple purposes or ties different sub-systems together.
-
Thanks Dave. I understand that it is hard to classify some files, but let's try our best :)
I'm also wondering if "BDIME.DLL" and "BIDIPM.DLL" should be consider part of PM. It references PMBIDI.DLL, PMWIN and PMGPI.
Regards
-
BDIME.DLL is the "Bi-Directional Input Method Editor (IME) for OS/2 PM" so I guess you could call it part of the PM but really it is more like a PM application.
BIDIPM.DLL seems to be where support for Bi_directional support for the PM lives so could call it part of the PM or perhaps the Presentation Manager section needs some subsections.
-
PMMRGRES is the resource library for PMMERGE. Run RDC from Resource Manager on it to see what's in it (from an empty directory, preferably, because it creates a ton of files). I'm not sure if it contains code as well.
I assume PMVDMH has something to do with VDM support.
-
Thanks for the replies. I updated the list. http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components)
Alex, can you give me some examples on how to use RDC? I just tried it but it is not generating anything for me, maybe it is because I don't know how to use it.
Regards.

Hi Martin
Have a read through http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm for an example of using rdc.

Thanks for the replies.
Any other "Presentation Manager" file that I'm missing on this list:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Files)
A little help to know what does the file does on the ones that has a blank comment is also appreciated. If we do not know for sure, we can take our best shot.

You should probably define "Presentation Manager".
Didn't OS/2 1.2 have Presentation Manager?
My OS/2 2.11 has a couple of floppy disks labeled "Multimedia Presentation Manager".
Was Presentation Manager in OS/2 Warp Version 3 the same thing?
Dave
-
I believe the Presentation Manager was introduced in OS/2 1.1, only 16bit with an interface similar to Win 3.x (it actually came first) with a Program Manager that was more advanced then Win3.x as windows could be independent of the parent and a file manager.
You can re-experience the experience by backing up your desktop and running (from a maintenance partition or such)
MAKEINI OS2.INI OS2_13.RC
OS/2 2.0 Introduced the 32 bit Presentation Manager though it took a while to go fully 32 bit, along with the WPS.
Probably what you have is a primitive version of MMOS2

Hi Dave.
As far as I know Presentation Manager was included on OS/2 1.1 and the version that we have today on Warp 4.52/eComStation is the evolution of that component. Presentation Manager is the GUI of OS/2 (not to be confused with the Workplace Shell which is the "Desktop Environment" that was included since Warp 3 (If I recall correctly) ).
I think that your disks on OS2 2.1.1 labeled as "Multimedia Presentation Manager" is what we also know MMPM/2 which is all the multimedia software that runs (in part) over PM. MMPM/2 is not a vital component of OS/2 if you don't need sound/video support. But PM is vital if you want to have a GUI on the OS.
Everybody is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.
Regards
-
As far as I know the WPS was introduced with OS/2 2.0.
-
Thanks for the correction Dave.
Returning to the subject, yesterday I updated the page an separated the files from PM and Open32, and created a new "component page" for it.
I know that it may be hard to draw the line on which file belong to which OS/2 component sometime, but the idea is to have the closer interpretation than we can.
So, you are all welcome to discuss if I'm missing any file or improve the file description of that PM page on EDM/2.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Files)

Wouldn't PMSPOOL.DLL be the support for the printer spool?
PMBIDI.DLL looks to be part of the BIDI (bi-directional text support for languages like Hebrew) and
PMVDMH.DLL may be the support for seemless Winos2.
-
Thanks Dave. I added the description. I will see if I can separate the Win16 and Spooler files from PM later when I improve the EDM/2 components category.
-
Thinking about it, maybe some of these DLLs such as PMSPOOL are more part of the WPS. Back when I only had 4MBs of ram and used alternative shells such as Filebar instead of the WPS, they all implemented their own printer spool.
-
Thanks for your help.
Now I'm putting PM (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager) to the rest, until any other comments arise, and and I'm moving on to SOM.
I'm listing the SOM (and DSOM) files here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files)
Any comments on files descriptions, missing or that should not be there are welcome.

Presentation Manager (PM) is the window management component of OS/2 - mainly window handling and related.
MMOS/2 (or MMPM/2, Multimedia Presentation Manager/2) was/is the multimedia component - video and audio. Currently OS/2 and eCS work on the Warp 4.52 version of Presentation Manager to show the desktop and all its windows.
IIRC, OS/2 had a Presentation Manager also in its 1.2 release, much different from the 2.0+ releases in code, features and appearance (OS/2 1.2 shares much code with the older versions of Windows NT/2000, to the extent that many character mode OS/2 applications run flawlessly under NT/2000).
-
Hi
I'm wondering if OS2\ETC\WPDSERV.IR and \OS2\ETC\WPSH.IR should be part of SOM or WPS ?
Regards
-
Hi Mentore
The reason that OS/2 code up to OS/2 1.3 works on NT/2000 is the OS/2 subsystem those operating systems contain. Remember that M$ were very involved in OS/2 up to and including 1.3 so I guess it was to their benefit that their early OS/2 apps could run on Windows NT/2000.

It seems that is getting hard to get details on SOM.
I'm still trying to find some description for some SOM files: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files

All true AFAICR. The IBM staff completely rewrote the window management after the IBM / MS split. IIRC, they also switched the pure PM programming interface from FAR PASCAL call scheme to C call scheme (indeed I saw many FAR PASCAL calls in Windows code some year ago, for and old Win16 program ported on Win32).

Hi
I run into some files that I don't know exactly if they are part of any of the categories I set up on the EDM/2 Components Category: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components
I have this files:
- SVGADATA.PMI
- SVGA.EXE
- DISPLAY.DLL
- BVHSVGA.DLL
For what I read this are part of the Video System for OS/2 (Base Video Handler and screen resolution). I don't know it will be good to create a category "Video System" for this files or put them under any of the categories I already created. What do you think?
Regards
-
I think that you should create a new category "video subsystem" with a sub-category "GRADD" or such. You're eventually going to have to create similar for MMOS2, networking etc.
-
Thanks Dave.
I'm creating this one: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Video_Subsystem
I'm not sure of all the files listed there applies to the Video Subsystem, I just selected them because they have a similar date of compilation.
I will keep on with this and see how it keeps shaping.
Regards
-
Look under x:\OS2\INSTALL, there's the VGA subdirectory and \OS2\INSTALL\display.log.
-
Thanks Dave. I will return later to the Video Subsystem.
Now I want to see if I can finish to put descriptions on the SOM files.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files
But it seems I'm not able to find details of what the files are for. I'm not sure what the DAT and TOC files are, seems like it got the SOM classes that got registered, or something like that.
Any help is welcome.

About: REGCONV.EXE and REGEDIT2.EXE
Will be ok to tell this files belongs to the Open32 component of OS/2?
Regards
-
Regedit2 is also an official way of editing the OS/2 ini files so not only is it part of Open32 but also part of the PM (WPS?). It's hard to put so much of this stuff under one category.
-
I just read that when you run REGEDIT2, it will run automatically REGCONV.EXE to create a fresh SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT if those files are missing.
Regards
-
Hi.
It seems I got stuck with SOM. I can not find more information to complete the table: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files)
For the moment I'm moving on Workplace Shell:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Workplace_Shell (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Workplace_Shell)
Comments about this subject are welcome. Let me know if you think I'm missing to list files that should be part of WPS on that page.
Regards
-
You could always not load the Workplace Shell and compare which DLLs are loaded compared to when the WPS is loaded, using Theseus or even pstat /L
-
Hi.
I need to learn more about Theseus, I have it running but I don't use it yet. I will check on it.
I have my doubts right now if "WINCFG.DLL" is part of WPS, it says it is WIN-OS/2 object. According to my idea it should be WPS, but it is on the line with the Win16 VDM.
Regards
-
Running strings on WINCFG.DLL, it is a PM program and has a SOM call so I'd guess it is the part of the WPS that contains and does the WINOS2 object settings.
-
I'm not sure if DSPRES.DLL (IBM:14.084#@ OS/2 Display Fonts) should be part of PM, or does it run independently of it.
-
It looks to me that SHPIINST.DLL can be listed as PM too. It has several PMMERGE and PMSHAPI functions on it.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/SHPIINST.DLL
What is the best way to determine if this is just a forwarder?

http://www.edm2.com/index.php/SHPIINST.DLL
What is the best way to determine if this is just a forwarder?
Run exehdr on it. Example of a forwarder,
Library: pmwin
Module type: Dynamic link library
Number of memory pages: 00000000 (0)
Initial CS:EIP: object 0 offset 00000000
Initial SS:ESP: object 0 offset 00000000
Automatic data object: 0
Exports:
ord obj offset name
52 0 00000000 WINQUERYUPDATEREGION forwarded to PMMERGE.3211
129 0 00000000 WINQUERYDLGITEMSHORT forwarded to PMMERGE.3185
31 0 00000000 WINQUERYWINDOWULONG forwarded to PMMERGE.3056
639 0 00000000 WINLOCKPOINTERUPDATE forwarded to PMMERGE.3162
14 0 00000000 WINENABLEWINDOWUPDATE forwarded to PMMERGE.3114
319 0 00000000 WINQUERYDESKTOPBKGND forwarded to PMMERGE.3184
...
Note that pmwin isn't just a simple forwarder but also translates function names into ordinals.
Best to pipe the output through less or such.
SHPINST.DLL has some interestingly named exports which leads me to think that it isn't part of the (2.x+) PM but I'm not sure what uses profiles. Almost looks like it is to manipulate the Program Manager which I believe was how 1.x worked
-
Thanks Dave.
I'm now using that tool too.
I'm checking on LANSOB3.DLL and LANSOU3.DLL now, the hint that I have is that both points to "OS2OM30.DLL". I'm not sure if those should be referenced as Open Class Library files, but they are also called by "LSPRWPS.DLL" so it may be IBM LAN stuff... that will be easy choice :)
Regards.
-
Hi
I just got a tip that "LANSOB3.DLL and LANSOU3.DLL " are from the Open Class Library. They are DLLRNAME'd from CPPOOB3.DLL and CPPOOU3.DLL. Thanks.
Even that the files are originally from the OCL library, I have the doubt that "as files" should be categorized under IBM LAN, since it seems (I guess) that anybody renamed CPPOOB3.DLL and CPPOOU3.DLL to fit the file name they want according to their software.
So, I'm putting them here (because I guess they are form IBM LAN) : http://www.edm2.com/index.php/OS/2_LAN_Server#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/OS/2_LAN_Server#Files)
But I also link them from the OCL : http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Open_Class_Library#Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Open_Class_Library#Files)
Yes, right now it is a mess, but I hope to keep correcting the wiki over time and found better ways to describe this.

I'm now trying to identify this DLLs.
NAMEDSP.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/NAMEDSP.DLL)
NAMEFW.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/NAMEFW.DLL)
NAMEREXX.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/NAMEREXX.DLL)

Hi.
I got a tip about this files.
Even that I'm not sure about it, I prefer to do something wrong and be corrected on the future, instead of not doing anything. And the good things is that what a Wiki is good for.
So, I'm putting the NAME*.DLL files on a component called WPOS_Name_Framework (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/WPOS_Name_Framework). Maybe I'm very wrong, but someone can correct it on the future.

Seems to be the file CMDREF.INF in the directory "\OS2\BOOK" on my system. Don't know if this is standard, the setup date of my system is 03-08-2005 and I can't remember what I did then. But it must be not difficult to track it down in your OS/2 directory.

Hi Joop.
I checked CMDREF.INF. The only reference I was available to find about the NANE*.* files (that I'm trying to assign to a component) is NAMEPIPES.DLL which only says it is required if you want to run some FTPREMOTE from a diskette.
But I will move on to Control Program (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Control_Program) and get back to those DLLs if someone can find a better explanation.

Hi Joop.
My goal (at this moment) is trying to assign to which OS/2 component does the NAMEDSP.DLL, NAMEFW.DLL and NAMEREXX.DLL files belongs too. I currently assigned it to a proposed component which I'm not sure on the Components page. (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components) (WPOS Name Framework)
About the CMDREF.INF (The Warp Server Commands and Utilities) has some referenced to name* functions, but from what I'm checking on these NAME*.DLL files I can not find a relation between these name* functions you are telling me and this files. So I guess are not related.
But I may be complete wrong, so anybody is free to correct me.

I'm not sure what IMP.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/IMP.DLL) does. I can not find information about the functions that it has inside.

Hi.
I'm still trying to figure it out on which component to fit this last files:
- ATMDATA.DAT (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/ATMDATA.DAT)
- DOSRFICO.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/DOSRFICO.DLL) (I'm putting this on the "Install Library"
- FILEVER.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/FILEVER.DLL)
- FKA.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/FKA.DLL)
- NWIAPI.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/NWIAPI.DLL)
- SYSFONT.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/SYSFONT.DLL)
Any ideas about "ATMDATA.DAT"? It seems realted to fonts, but which component/DLL calls it or use it. It is related to Adobe Type Manager or it is no ? Any idea to find it there is any relation with PMATM.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/PMATM.DLL)?
-
Hi Martin, this is what I found:
ATMDATA.DAT - This file contains a list of aliases and filenames separated by a '>' for Japanese ATM fonts. It has references for User Defined Characters (UDC) of the HeiseiKakuGothic and HeiseiMincho fonts. The IBM supplied CIDFont names are IBJHKGW5.CID for Japanese Heisei Kaku Gothic (JHKG), and IBJHMNW3.CID for Japanese Heisei Mincho (JHMN). See g5445854.pdf for more information. It seems to me that ATMDATA.DAT is a leftover from using Type Transformer.
DOSRFICO.DLL - DosRefreshIcons dll for System Installation. Used by RSPINST.EXE - OS/2 V3 Response File Installation.
FKA.DLL - Function Key Area DLL - Used by LXLITE.EXE and it seems that PMMERGE.DLL loads it. EPMKWDS.C knows its ordinal functions such as ORD_FKAINIT. These are defined a.o. in the BSEORD.H of the toolkit.
FILEVER.DLL - OS/2 File Version Check. INSTALL.DLL and NPFI.DLL are using it. CHECKASD.EXE - Check ASD Features Utility is using it too.
NWAPI.DLL - Network generic API's. NWDDE.EXE is using it.
SYSFONT.DLL - Used by MIRRORS.DLL and contains SYSFONT #FONTRES CONTINUOUSSCALING : Sysfont, whatever that is, and OS/2 FONT bitmaps of the Mirrors-EGA, Mirrors-OEM-EGA, Mirrors-VGA, Mirrors-OEM-VGA, Mirrors-XGA, Mirrors-OEM-XGA fonts.
Wim.

Thank you very much Wim. This information is important to me and I'm putting it on the EDM/2 wiki.
Just two little things:
1) I'm referring to "NWIAPI.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/NWIAPI.DLL)" and not "NWAPI.DLL". But I also added your description on the wiki for NWAPI.DLL. But I think that maybe both should be on the same group under "OS/2 LAN Server".
2) Do you have a technique to know which DLL or EXE calls an specific DLL? Because the only way I know is going each EXE one by one with PMDLL. If there is a better technique I will appreciate it.
Regards

When I search all files on my boot drive for text 'NWIAPI' I get
"M:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\LSDAEMON.EXE"
"M:\OS2\DLL\LSPRWPS.DLL"
"M:\OS2\DLL\PMSPL.DLL"
"M:\OS2\DLL\PMWP.DLL"
"M:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM\PMSPL.DLL"
and a few dump (.dmp) files. So probably all of the above will/can load nwiapi.dll.
I'm using DataSeeker for searching ;)

I am doing the same thing as Andi B. but I am using Seek and Scan Files. I search separately for *.exe and for *.dll files with the text string: nwiapi. Then I use a text browser to look for readable text in those files . I also use bldlevel on those files. Sometimes I'll search again using portions of the readable text I found with bldlevel.

Hi.
Thanks for the tip I will start using Dataseeker for this.
I'm starting to check the "Graphics Subsystem". I'm reading this book (OS/2 Warp (PowerPC Edition) A First Look- Page 109 / 4.3 Graphics Subsystem (http://www.ecomstation.it/pido2/home/esterni/os2power.pdf)). But I think that document is confusing me more.
Does the same architecture applies for OS/2 Warp 4.5 and eComStation? or this was only applied on PowerPC and didn't move forward on the Intel platform?

As I remember, the GRADD video system was originally written for OS/2 PPC and then ported to i386 OS/2.
It'll be complicated due to i386 also supporting the legacy video drivers.

I think that I understood better after reading those pages how what is called "Graphics Subsystem" works on OS/2. And I also think it applies to OS/2 Warp 4.5x and eCS as we have it today.
The graphic helped me to understand how to organize it referring to an architectural view.
I will think how to reorganize the GRADD and Video Subsystem pages of the EDM/2 pages.
Here it goes, corrections are welcome.
(Correction, I just updated the graphic, there was a horrible mistake)

Hi
I'm still working on this (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components) little by little on the EDM/2 Wiki.
I'm putting USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT as part of the Open32 component (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Open32#Files). If I delete both files, and I run a Qt application, it seems that Registry.DLL creates them again. I'm not sure if I'm right.

There's a program, which I forget the name of, to recreate them. Simplest is to run regedit2.exe which will call the other program and recreate both with the bare entries. Note that not only Open32 but also Odin programs use them as the WIn registry.

Hi Dave
My weak conclusion, that "USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT" are created by "REGISTRY.DLL" (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/REGISTRY.DLL), is based on what I tested it on my "cropped experimental VM". I don't have any of the Open32 files listed on the EDM/2 wiki (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Open32) (neither regedit2.exe), but I have "REGISTRY.DLL" so the Qt Apps can run. When I run a Qt app, it takes longer to load the first time and "USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT" gets created on \OS2\SYSTEM. Also "REGISTRY.DLL" (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/REGISTRY.DLL) seems to have some related functions inside it.
But I may be wrong, since I don't know any other technique to find out which file/component/DLL generate those two .DAT files. Maybe it is other the DLL creates it that I have around somewhere else. Any other tip on tools on how to analyze this are welcome.

Perhaps at heart it is registry.dll that creates the registry and the program I'm thinking of only calls registry.dll. Is the registry populated or empty when created o your system? You might need to install regedit2 to check.
-
Hi, it seems that I found the other programs that creates that registry. It is REGCONV.EXE, but I don't have it on my VM.
I have this about REGCONV.EXE - http://www.edm2.com/index.php/REGCONV.EXE
"By running \OS2\SYSTEM\REGCONV.EXE, this will create a fresh SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT. REGCONV is run automatically by REGEDIT2 if those two files are not present. " But REGCONV.EXE requires REGISTRY.DLL.
I'm also thinking that I should move "PMDDEML.DLL (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/PMDDEML.DLL)" as a component of Open32 and not as a PM component, PM can run without issues if I remove that file. I'm not sure about what the "WinDDE..." functions are for. And it also seems that only PMWINX.DLL and NPFI.DLL uses that DLL.

I assume that "PMDDEML.DLL" contains the DDE stuff. DDE is an old means for programs to communicate between each other, this includes PM programs, Win16 programs (there's a setting in the winos2 properties to allow winos2 program to use DDE to communicate with PM program) and I guess Win32 programs. In which case "PMDDEML.DLL" is the PM part of the DDE chain and any OS/2 program trying to use DDE would probably fail or produce warnings if "PMDDEML.DLL" is missing.
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Data_Exchange (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Data_Exchange),
In computing, Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is a method of interprocess communication under Microsoft Windows or OS/2. It allows one program to subscribe to items made available by another program, for example a cell in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and be notified whenever that item changes.

2) Do you have a technique to know which DLL or EXE calls an specific DLL? Because the only way I know is going each EXE one by one with PMDLL. If there is a better technique I will appreciate it.
In this articule :
http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0708H/feature_3.html
PM program DLL Tree (pmdll28.zip) reports.
I do not if this can help you.

Hi
Going on this subject I also included a graphics that I remade for the EDM/2 wiki about the OS/2 TCP/IP Internal Structure which list the files it is list.
The graphic is here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Multiprotocol_Transport_Networking

Hi
I'm still on the process on documenting OS/2's Files descriptions on the EDM/2 Wiki: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Files (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Files)
If you know something about an OS/2 file, please search it there... if it is not available there post the description here to keep improving OS/2 documentation. If you can edit the EDM/2 wiki directly you are free to do it, but if you lack access to it I will be happy to post it for you.
