Networking / Re: OS/2 IP Stack Hardening
« on: December 23, 2025, 02:39:42 am »
Hi Chris,

If it is of help, I created os2serv updates in the https://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/ directories.
One example is in https://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/wseb/fixpack3/zip/index.html which is the WSeB FP3. Instructions are in the install.txt file.

I have my original OS/2 Warp3 from the 90's, which has been updated over the decades to OS/2 Warp 4.x running in Virtualbox under Ubuntu. Use it for PMView, PMMail and a few other OS/2 related programs etc. OS/2 has always been an reasonably easy OS to transfer between media and computers. Almost blew it away to start again over the years but managed to get it working again after various um.. mishaps.. so I still call it my original install after v2.11 that Gavin Povey from IBM gave me.

Still an enjoyable OS to use and maintain.

Hi Chris,

WSeB/Warp v4.52

Assuming you are using 'inetcfg -s all' in your setup.cmd file (check your mtu if you manually set it in setup.cmd as well).
These are the settings I have in x:/mptn/etc/inetcfg.ini

Your mileage will vary depending on needs but with the amount of rubbish hitting my server when its on, I long ago changed 'keepalive' to 20 secs to stop socket attacks to some extent, along with using Injoys FW. With the speed of connections now, keepalive can likely be set to 10 sec.

multidefrt and ipforward depend on your needs
synattack and syncookie I leave to the firewall, and having them off improves the servers uptime to months.
arpkill I also leave to the firewall but you can reduce those if you have a direct inet connection.
some ICMP and udp packets are also clobbered at my firewall.
mtudiscover also depends on your server, router etc. I turn it off for the server but it needs to be changed depending on your service provider if done manuallly.

The past 24 months, the internet has so much crud hitting servers it has become difficult to self host.

Under network setup for your container, select "Allow All" for Promiscuous Mode.

I use what comes with Ubuntu as it works fine for OS/2 in Virtualbox, otherwise I used, and occasionally still use PMView.

Hi Martin,

Gone back to an older mirror from 2008, it is missing the os2_text_files directory.
I have the same results when searching, the directory obviously existed as it is referenced at several other sites but no one seems to have a copy of it.
Wonder why it was removed?

If anyone else can find a copy, I would be interested in it...

Hi Martin,

My copy of ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs  does not have a "os2_text_files" directory. I did a search for ar5.txt under my ftp.pc.ibm.com, and ftp.software.ibm.com mirrors with no hits :(

I'll check some older archives.

Hi Martin,

If no joy from others, let me know and I can take it from my archive and put it somewhere for you (the complete ftp site)

Putting it simply, sometimes DEFRAGFS puts the right bits back in the wrong place :)

Programming / Re: Brainstorm: OS/2 on a Different Kernel

Hi jmase,

For IBM, and the world, it is not about being anti opensource but the fact the OS/2 contains propriety code from many other companies, including Apple, Amiga, Microsoft and many more that IBM has no control over the copyright to that source.

The cost and resources required for IBM to separate the code that it does own from the code that it does not outweighs any benefit IBM would get from doing so, and it would still risk accidentally releasing code it has no rights to.

IBM has been shown to be very open to open sourcing the program code that it has 100% control over including JFS. IBM has made over 400 of its patented technologies available for free to the open-source community from about 2005, there have been hiccups but overall that seems to have worked. The company has also donated entire projects to the Apache Foundation and others. IBM isn't perfect but compared to some other companies its doing ok.

We can be pushy with IBM but we also need to do it in a professional manner.

Hi Martin/Dave,

Saw this post so thought I'd better check my rarely used gmail account.
Changed the IP address in DNS so should be right to go as the changes work there way around the world.

Hi Neil,

You may like to try unzipping Paul's latest BIND build and copying the *.exe files to your x:\mptn\bin directory, this will replace host.exe, dig and other tcpip utilities to more recent builds.

Setup & Installation / Re: Is FixPak 5 for WSeB 4.52 available anywhere?
« on: October 14, 2024, 02:12:31 pm »
Hi Richard,

Fixpacks were the same for the OS/2 Convenience Packages and WSeB, IBM did not want to keep seperate trees at that stage.

xr_c005 & xr_c006 both exist, though not for public posting as they were Software Choice Subscriptions only. These days you would look at ArcaOS which includes the fixes.

FP5 (xr_c005) for WSeB was the last official one, FP6 (xr_c006) does exist but my notes on it are:

This is not officially released, didnt even make it to the ALPHA stage and there have been reports that it is very unstable. Best to stick with FP5 with updated pmmerge.dll file.

The Object Rexx updated shipped in Fixpack 3 appears to cause problems with several Rexx-based applications.  This update will backout that update to the previous level of Object Rexx.

Other users have reported problems with the PMMERGE.DLL module shipped in Fixpack 5.  This update will backout that update to the Fixpack 4 level of PMMERGE.DLL.

fp5_up target_drive update_option
target_drive is letter (with semi-colon) of the drive to be updated
update_option is the update to be applied, rexx (OREXX.DLL) or merge
  (pmmerge.dll).

Hi Nathan,

I am also seeing other people from around the same time period (some of whose threads I participated in) whose posts show they have also been converted to "Guest" users, indicating that their accounts have also been deleted.  I wonder what happened to cause such a purge of non-spam accounts from around the same time period...

That might have been when a server fault developed, may not have been spam account purging.
Martin has a better memory that I of server problems :)
