Storage / Slow FAT32.
« on: September 15, 2025, 01:31:47 pm »
Hi,

On my Lenovo T60 laptop, copying an ArcaOS iso (1.6Gb) from a JFS partition to a FAT32 USB stick or external USB SSD takes about 3 hours.
From JFS to JFS external goes pretty fast well.
OK, the interface is USB 2.0.
The interface of the external SSD is USB 3.xx.
I use this partition for compatibility reasons. If ArcaOS isn't available I have my Mac or else I can find a windows computer.
Why is the copy action so slow?
Is this due the size of the partition; 32Gb or the USB 2.0?

Setup & Installation / Re: BonusPak installation, fail.
« on: September 08, 2025, 09:14:55 pm »
Hi,

When I read the messages, I guess there is a difference between installing the (complete) bonuspack or just IBM works.
Just installing IBM works then the most simple solution is to copy the complete unpacked directory to e.g. C:\Programs.
The name IBMWorks is mandatory (?).
Open a CMD.EXE window, go to the directory C:\Programs\IBMWorks and run the *.cmd that creates the desktop objects.
Add a rule into config.sys for the ibmworks directory and you're done.
Installing the complete bonuspack applications is a different story.
Mine is from the former eCS 2 CD.
And the installation program refuses to work.
A version of OS/2 Warp 3.0 bonuspack installs not from the downloaded and mounted iso with iPods.
Just when the iso was burned to a cd-rom, then the installation works.
Unfortunately, I can't program in REXX.
For now, I'm trying to find an install program of OS/2 Warp 4.0, that replaces the changed eCS version. Perhaps that works and hopefully I can than install the complete bonuspack.

Hardware / Install modern printer under ArcaOS 5.1.1
« on: September 07, 2025, 07:17:35 pm »
Hi,

Perhaps, this the most difficult part of ArcaOS.
Find a suffer printerdriver.
My current (inkjet) printer is not the modern.
The Epson XP-6000 is from 2018 but works perfect, at least under MacOS and windows (not windows 3.xx)
I have tried several options for installing this printer.
It looks that I have found a CUPS compatible file for installing this printer, but not.
Then I have to fall back on the older printerdrivers shipped with ArcaOS.
Succes is variable, flat text will be printed out but OO en Lotus smart suite don't.
The printer is then connected with an USB kabel to the laptop, wifi won't work.
ArcaOS "sees" the USB connected printer but I'm not able to install a printerdriver.

Suggestions?
Adrian

IBMWorks 3.0 is also on the eCS CD #2.

I saw that Roderick Klein already gives a reaction.
Indeed, the eCS version of the IBM bonuspack will not install on an ArcaOS installation.
The eCS boys changed the installation script in such way that it needs a certain eCS directory.

Hi Adrian

You should consider a minimum of 3 volumes (partitions)

1] Boot - for ArcaoS you do not need a large partition, I use a 2Gb HPFS boot volume

2] Apps - Obviously the volume to install applications to, you'll probably find a 50Gb JFS volume more than sufficient

3] Data - a volume to store your created data files, browser profiles and TEMP directory, use rest of ssd formatted JFS for this volume

With the above setup it is possible to update/re-install the OS without losing any applications or data.

Hi Pete,

Is that possible?
And the settings writing in config.sys and the *.ini files?

Regarding the too large disk problem that older apps can have I think you need to install something called 2GBFIX... It is included with ArcaOS in [install media/iso image]:\CID\SERVER\ARCAPKG\2GBFIX.ZIP
Hopefully someone else will jump in if I have pointed you to the wrong fix.

Pete

Hi,

What is the best partition size for an installation for ArcaOS 5.1.1?
The problem is not less disk space but to much.
I have a BIOS laptop with a SSD of 256Gb.
The boot partition for ArcaOS is 64Gb JFS.
When I tried to install WP 5.2 for OS/2 or Coreldraw! 2.5, mostly the installation aborted on disk space.
When I try other (old) software, the most cannot handle the space.
So, what is the best size for a boot partition for ArcaOS and programs?

Adrian
