Hardware / Re: Soundblaster Live 1024 drivers
« on: August 26, 2025, 01:27:20 am »
Years ago, I had 4 SBLIVE cards. 2 of them worked with UNIAUD, and not with Sanders' driver. The other two worked with Sanders' driver, and not UNIAUD (then one of them quit working). Even windows found something different with them. I don't remember the details, but if one driver doesn't work, try the other.

I quit using HPFS, years ago. Two major reasons:

1: The HPFS cache uses lower shared memory space, which is often critical to get other things to work.

2: When a CHKDSK is necessary, at boot time, JFS is a lot faster, and less likely to corrupt something.

Since modern disks are not really limited by size, I use 5 GB for boot drives (4 GB is plenty, but what the heck), and I keep the UNIXROOT on the boot drive. I also do not split data and programs, to different drives, but that is up to you. You may want a FAT32 drive, to share data with windows (FAT32 is VERY slow, even when it is on a NVME drive). If you want to install an ancient program that balks at the free space, install it to the boot drive, then move it if you want to.

Setup & Installation / Re: SDHC Card Support

Using a Thinkpad T530 - it has an SD Card slot, collecting dust.

Should I be able to pop-in an SDHC
card and use minilvm to format it?

Would the recommendation be FAT32 or JFS?

Is the backend for this the usbmsd?

I expect that it is the same as the slot in my ThinkPad L530. I never got it to work. The simple solution was to get a USB SD card adapter. I got a Kingston device (Realtek internally). It started to work with the Arca Noae USB stack, a few releases ago.

There may be a better option, unless you use the SD card with another device. I have a couple of USB external drives, using SABRENT enclosures, with Crucial NVME sticks. They work far better than SD cards (and adapters).

My T43 1871 has n IDE interface, so SSD is not possible. It wouldn't do any good anyway, because it would be limited to the bus speed.

PCMCIA is possible, but it is also slow, even if you could find suitable hardware.

I have 1.5 GB of memory, which works well. You need at least, 1 GB to avoid excessive paging. I think 2 GB is maximum, in that machine.

Bottom line is that it is an OLD machine, with many limits.

There is also USB serial port, if you have one.

I seem to recall, that PMFAX has something, but I don't remember the details.

There is also that old "alternate" serial driver. Again, my memory fails me.

Perhaps a VBox system can do it.

Setup & Installation / Re: pscom.sys proper way to pass args

pscom.sys (1,3fa,4) on the command line

This is not correct. The parameters are 1,3F8,4 (DEFAULT, so nothing is needed.  Looking in my BIOS, I found that I had turned off the COM port. I turned it back on, added the PSCOM line:
Code: [Select]
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\PSCOM.SYSand it boots fine. No point though, because there is no serial connector, until I attach to a docking station.

WinXP may be causing the problem. There was something, recently (which I can't find), about older windows failing to set the USB stick correctly (it won't boot, not resolved). There could be something wrong with the way it burns DVDs too.

You could try one of the Linux versions, that will boot from a CD/DVD, to create the USB, or DVD media.

Note that the T43, that Lewis has, is the "other" model. Mine is an 1871.

My T43 1871-W8M  works okay, but won't run the software that requires Pentium4 support.

I have seen the flashing cursor, on various machines. It usually means that the BIOS settings are not correct, or the media was not created correctly.

The first thing to do, is avoid using anything (GParted), other than OS/2 tools, to do anything with the disk drive. It ALWAYS ends up wrong (but that probably isn't causing the problem). You do need to get booted to OS/2 to use the tools.

So, some questions:

How did you create the USB stick? (you may want to try again, and carefully follow the instructions).

How did you create the DVD?

Applications / Re: PMMail fails sending messages

I am a registered user and I am running PMMail 3.11.30.1767

The first thing to do, is get up to date: http://pmmail.os2voice.org/index.php?title=PMMail_for_OS/2. STunnel was updated (not sure which version). Whether it will help, or not, remains to be seen.

A verbose log would also help.

Help me, please. Add support for this device to the USBCOM driver.

Perhaps a silly question, but have you tried USBSER,SYS?

Arca Noae is spending a LOT of effort to make OS/2 talk in different languages (I don't know the details). Currently available versions only speak English, although some programs do more than one language. More details should become available, as language support is readied for distribution.

Probably you know it anyway but what comes to mind are -
- disable Energy saving in XP WLAN driver setting
- shut down XP while WLAN is acitve

Neither helped. I think I was messing with this, a couple of years ago, so I did a clean install of ArcaOS 5.0.8. After adding a profile, it works.

That is, it works with WPA-PSK, and NOT with WPA2-PSK. That has always been the case, with this machine (WPA2-PSK does work in winXP). If I was actually going to use this, I would do more tweaking in the settings.

I've a T43 somewhere in the store which I'm pretty sure with working wlan.

My T43 (1871 model, but that shouldn't matter) did work, with no troubles, but that was a wile back. Obviously something went wrong, somewhere. I need to find some time to play with it. It does work in winXP, so the hardware is okay.

Sorry, but I seem to have missed something. This isn't working, and I have run out of time, for now. See if you can make it work, and I will be back later.

Andi B knows a lot more about configuring this, than I do.

Now, a travel router attached to an Ethernet port does so much more,

I fully agree with this, which is one of the reasons why I haven't got this to work previously.

FTR, I haven't been able to configure my IBM ThinkPad T43 to work with GENMU. I have, obviously, missed something. I can get the computer to do all that is expected, except to actually connect to the router. Effectively, the "cable" is missing, otherwise it looks good. The "cable" is supplied by the WPAsupplicant. I will report back, if I can figure it out.
