Setup & Installation / Re: Looping ArcaOS Install

Martin,

The key is to select the 'Skip Disk Integrity Check' on the install menu. According to the info in the Ticket, this prevents the boot code being installed on the hard disk. Therefore each time the CD Boots it does not see anything bootable on the hard disk, so it never gives you the option.

Ticket 3548 created for this issue and David A has confirmed that is a real issue. Work around is to install Air-Boot for now.

Hi Eric

When installing ArcaOS 5.1 (BIOS) on VirtualBox 7.0.10 (Windows 10 Host) I didn't get that issue. I always get the "Boot from HDD or CD" little menu when the ISO is mounted.

UEFI boot ins VirtualBox is a different thing, which I'm testing out.

Do you want to try this empty OVA I'm attaching and see if you can install ArcaOS 5.1.0? Double click it and it will create a VM in VirtualBox, mount the CD and run it. If it works you can compare the settings.

Regards

No difference, still boots direct to the set options menu. I'll open a ticket now. I waited to see if anyone in the greater world had a quick fix.

Setup & Installation / Looping ArcaOS Install
« on: October 10, 2023, 04:27:01 am »
Attempting to install V5.1 into Virtual Box, but I'm getting into a loop that I have no idea how to get out of. I start off the install and after the first phase completes and the machine reboots I'm back to the main installer screen again. It never seems to boot off the hard disk to continue with the install.

This version also does not show the 'Boot from Hard Disk' as the first menu. The first menu I get is installer screen with the menu options ('default values', 'boot with menu for own value' or display online docs'. I checked out the installation guide and readmes, but don't know how to proceed from here.

Doing this under VirtualBox 7.0, where I have my other eCS/ArcaOs versions running.

Setup & Installation / Re: Determine ArcaOs Version installed

I could only find the version using the install.flg method for ArcaOS. It would be great if a SYSLEVEL file was included. Try the attached. It was something I used to use with ECS and just extended it for ArcaOS. I think this is accessible here if you want to see how I did it:

https://greenenet.ddns.net/os2project/version

If the link works, nver.exe is the executable. It checks for OSDIR, if not present check for ECS, if OSDIR then probably ARCA so check for install.flg and parse the first line.

Mike

Mike,

Thanks, nver is exactly what I was looking for. It just baffles me that something like this is not part of the base ArcaOs system.

Setup & Installation / Determine ArcaOs Version installed
« on: September 26, 2023, 04:33:42 pm »
I know I asked this before, but can not find the answer. Whats the best way to determine the version of ArcaOs installed. I would like a simple command like Ver. I found command that get some information (VER and VERSION) but nothing to give me the ARCAOS Version. I would be nice if there was a simple way to determine this. I have quite a few different installs running around and need whats installed for each. Either add a command file or enhance the Version.Cmd to display the ArcaOs Version.

Thanks

The output of VER and VERSION give me the following in the attached file.

I'd like to be able to set display resolution to numbers I like, instead of relying on those few that the VESA interface provides.

Hi Neil.

I didn't get this one, since I only have 1920x1080 monitors or less.
Do you mean that in Panorama there is missing some configuration for higher resolutions? or custom resolutions? Is there any resolution number that is giving you problems?

Regard

I may start a new thread for this, but this is my list of choices for screen resolution

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200
1920x 1440
3840x2160

Notice that only the last one is a wide-screen.

Your list plus 1920x1080 as that is what I currently use on my Arca/Os machines, as its the highest resolution my TrendNet KVM Supports. I drive a ViewSonic 32" at that resolution. I'm pretty sure that the ViewSonic will do better, but alas thats all my KVM will pass and I really don't want to have 4 monitors/Keyboards on my desk. 1 set of each is so much more convenient  ;D

Setup & Installation / Re: How to update Cups between ArcaOS version?
« on: October 08, 2020, 03:13:09 am »
I noticed that with ArcaOs V5.0.5 and V5.0.6 came with some updated CUPS drivers for Brother Printers. How can I get the version of CUPS from a V5.0.6 installed onto a V5.0.3 system? I tried ANPN and I did not find any cups packages with updates available for install.

Do you have a v5.0.5 or v5.0.6 ISO? If so they may be in x:\CID\SERVER
RPM\LOCALREP. Might be as easy as going to Manage Repositories in ANPM and enabling the arca_inst repository with your ISO mounted, or you may need to add it.

Well I tried enabling the arca_inst repository in the list and during the refresh I get an error

YUM returned an error:

failure: repodata/fileslist.xml.gz from arca_inst: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

The data under manage repository for the arca_inst is:

[arca_inst]
name = ArcaOS Install CD/DVD
baseurl = file:///drives/arcainst/CID/SERVER/RPM/LOCALREP
enabled=1

I have the ISO mounted as Drive I: in my Virtual Box.

That sounds like there are two DLLs with identical name but completely different functionality.

Well IO wondered that too, but once i uninstall the Vac++ and reboot, its still broken.

VAC 3.x has the unfortunate misbehaviour to install completely outdated SOM DLLs. And its installer prepends the LIBPATH statement with the path to these outdated DLLs. Therefore, DIRECTLY AFTER installation of VAC 3.x and BEFORE rebooting, you will need to modify config.sys to put this prepended path to the very end of LIBPATH. Likewise, after deinstallation, check that all files are gone and that LIBPATH (and also PATH, HELP, DPATH etc.) are correct (no longer containing paths of the VAC 3.x installation).
SOM is used all across the board, most notably, the complete WPS builds upon SOM.

I've been aware of that for many years and always do a Config.sys Edit before I reboot and let the Workframe/2 Phase II install run.

One of the things I'm trying to find, but have not been able to track down, is what is the syntax to use Samba to map a drive under ArcaOs. That way I can get the AcraMapper out of the equation and determine if samba is really broken or not. I can find lots of examples on the web, but they are all oriented towards linux boxes which don't use a Drive Letter based mount system.

I believe there were some changes to authentication in the newer plugin (defaults). You may need to set ArcaMapper to use a lower security level, or, figure out how to set the device to use a higher level. open ArcaMapper, and go to Global Settings, page 2 (expand the window width, and a HELP button should appear).Under Client Min Protocol, try different settings, but put it back, if that doesn't help.

Well I figured out what has broken Samba. It turns out to be Visual Age C++ V3.0. As soon as I install the compiler and libraries, Samba stops working to add new mounts. Now surprisingly any mounts that are already in existence before I do the install are retained across boots, its just that I can not perform any new mounts.

Probably by using [DVD]:\CID\SERVER\SAMBA\SAMBA.WPI

That is the SAMBA SERVER. ArcaMapper is in \CID\SERVER\ARCAPKG\ARCAMAP.WPI. The client is in \CID\SERVER\ARCAPKG\NDFS.ZIP and \CID\SERVER\ARCAPKG\NDPSMB.ZIP. There may actually be something else.

Since you uninstalled ArcaMapper, you should just need to re-install it. The rest would be more complicated to un/install.
What I actually uninstalled was Samba via ANPM, I was then (unpleasantly) surprised that it then disappeared from the list of available packages. Let me give those a try and see if I can get it back.

Ok,

I've figured out that something I've installed is the issue. Going to try the re-install and see if that works, otherwise I'll simply re-build the system, one application at a time and see if I can identify the culprit.

Cheers,

Networking / How to reinstall Samba Client?
« on: September 28, 2020, 09:08:10 pm »
On a previous post I listed an issue with using ArcaMapper and Samba on a V5.0.5 system. I've tracked down the issue to it being something else I've installed, that seems to have broken it. So as a first attempt, I'm going to try and re-install of Samba. Well I did an uninstall of the V4.11 Samba client via ANPN, but now I don't have any samba versions available for re-install.

So how can I re-install the original version of samba that came off my ArcaOs V5.0.5 DVD?

TIA.
