is it recommended unistalling the existing previous version before installing this last one?

Install the new version on top of the existing one. There is no need to uninstall anything.

thank you

XWorkplace v1.0.13 GA is now available.

  • Install/Remove - after uninstalling XWP, the "System" object will be recreated in System Setup the next time the Desktop restarts

Hi Rich, is it recommended unistalling the existing previous version before installing this last one?
Thank you

thank you, I read it should be used replacing se setup.exe file in the installation directory containing all necessary files, but I could not use it with a standalone installation package with all files in it, unless in such situation I use an "unpacker" which deploy all files contained in it.

That sounds about right.

ODIN is not really used any more, other than as DLL support for ported programs. What, exactly, are you trying to install? Somebody may have tried it, or suggestions about alternate programs can be made.

nothing to be considered a matter of "life or death" , it was Paint Shop Pro 7.  I've recently discovered in Joop's Java applications page a good similar one, Java Image Editor

ok I had already tried with this workaround (learned here of course) of filling the empty volume space with a giant file to make the remaining free space become little more than 1 Gb, but it hasn't worked

I remember that there is, at least, one windows installer that just won't work. Try Dave's suggestion, and replace the installer with the one that is known to work (no guarantees though).

do you know if this fix works also in OS2 Warp for the "not enough space" issue on windows installer running in Odin, which I learned it is due the 2Gb space limit ?

No. it is for DOS and Win/OS2 only.

There was a tweaked windows installer, somewhere. I have no idea how well it works (and 2 GB doesn't sound right). The other way around that, is to add enough files to the drive, to change the number wrap, so the installer thinks it has about 2 GB (or whatever the number is) free.

The problem is, that DOS, and by extension Win/OS2, only know about 2 GB partitions. That is the reason why later versions of ArcaOS have the 2GBfix package installed. It is at HOBBES: https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/dos/2gbfix.zip. That package is further modified by a patch; https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/dos/2GBFIXPA.ZIP. When you use that, DOS and Win/OS2 only see 2 GB drives, even though there is a lot more there.

do you know if this fix works also in OS2 Warp for the "not enough space" issue on windows installer running in Odin, which I learned it is due the 2Gb space limit ?

Hey mauro, How are you doing,I haven't talked with you in many years, I'm older than dirt now!
Could you elaborate a little more on how you set up the host share in Linux. I'm doing something wrong.
Glad to see you still around.

klipp
I'm doing well thanks, same hope you do, maybe I'm not the mauro you know, joined this forum since later 2018 but I'm glad to meet you.
So, to set a shared folder for one or more guest machines in Virtualbox you need the OS2 Guest Additions to be installed in each guest system, and adding "Shared Folder" option in their Virtualbox settings from where you will browse the folder to select, allowing for it read/write and bidirectional properties.
Installing OS2 Guest Addition it's a bit tricky (it was for me) but I succeeded thanks to Valery's package which has been here linked by Martin,  and the brilliant support received.
While setting the Shared Folder in the Virtualbox gm configuration is an easier task.  I did it in Linux too and do not remember exactly if furthemore I had to open a terminal for giving complete access permissions to the choosen folder, but in case it's only a matter of
sudo chmod 777 (foldername)

hi Klipp, according to what happens in my Windows hosted Virtualbox having 3 different OS2 Warp 4.52 machines installation , the answer is yes:  if I run all of those 3 machines at same time, they are sharing the same folder setted in the host, and any machine can pickup/exchange files in there during the opened session

« on: April 24, 2020, 03:29:09 pm »
Pete, Ivan, Lars, Dariusz; after having found a forgotten call to JAVA11 in config.sys LIBPATH, and now deleted it (every previous C:\JAVA11 call found in config.sys  now replaced by C:\APPS\OpenJDK), LVMGUI.CMD object has then began to work as clicked.
So I could place a shadow copy where I like to find that, and call it Logical Volume Manager, ready to use.
Thank you for assisting me to understand how to fix this issue

Hi mauro

Maybe I was not clear in my previous message or maybe I am misunderstanding the above...

it is not the lvmgui.cmd Properties that need modifying it is the Logical Volume Management object in System Setup that needs modifying.
The only difference between the Properties shown in ivans image and the Properties on your system will be the Working directory which is the location of lvmgui.cmd

yes, I first did the attempt on my Logical Volume Manager object as previolusly said ("I then also applied the properties editing suggested by Ivan"), and the difference shown was not only in the Working Directory locating the lvmgui.cmd which I setted with the actual for my case, but also in Path and File Name field which contained java.exe in my case vs lvmgui.cmd in his case. All possible values replacement brought no improvements.

Quote

Looking at your lvmgui.cmd file it is a bit different to the lvmgui.txt file which is my current lvmgui.cmd renamed to txt to allow it to be uploaded here.

......................

Copy lvmgui.cmd to lvmgui.cmd.IBM to make a backup of the original file
Delete lvmgui.cmd
Copy lvmgui.txt to lvmgui.cmd
The Properties for lvmgui.cmd should have the Path and file name showing the current Drive:\Directory\lvmgui.cmd,
replace the Drive:\Directory with the location on your system, and no other entries on the Program page.
On the Menu page check that Open as is set as Program.

Does this lvmgui.cmd then work OK from the command line?

ok, as made all this, lvmgui does not work anymore not even recalled in the command prompt window, this is the answer returned:

[C:\OS2]lvmgui
     5 +++   Parse Value Jvm_find('LVM') With java_exe java_dir class_pa
ir lvm_java_dir;
REX0043: Error 43 running C:\OS2\LVMGUI.CMD, line 5: Routine not found

Does starting from the Logical Volume Management object work?

Regards

Pete

of course it does not.
I try to revert the fix proposal from another view but admit from now that this could be the tipical idiot question: wouldn't it be simplest creating a one-line script .cmd object containing the running command equal to the well working command the OS2 window prompt?  Then such file object should work with a double click and finally replace the not-working object in OS2 System Setup

Hi mauro

The Properties need modifying:

Copy ivans setup from his uploaded Logical_00.jpg image but set the Working directory to the location of lvmgui.cmd - possibly \os2...

I cannot remember the contents of lvmgui.cmd as supplied with OS/2 so have uploaded my copy of lvmgui.cmd as lvmgui.txt

Regards

Pete

Thanks Pete, my LVMGUI.CMD properties only shows C:\OS2\LVMGUI.CMD string in "Path and filename" field, the other two below are empty.  Nothing happens after adding the values suggested by Ivan in there.
I paste here below its script content. Then I also attach the captured snapshot of the output message after clicking on the object, while it still works fine if invoked in OS2 command window

Hi mauro

To use lvmgui with openjdk  the config.sys Path needs to have this line

  J:\Java\openjdk\bin;

Change the Drive and Path  to match your system

Obviously a reboot is required after editing config.sys

Optionally: As java11 is not used for anything these days - apart from maybe some very old java apps - I suggest getting rid of java11.

This is done fairly simply by selecting Computer -> Install/Remove -> Installed Features and uninstalling.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete, I started to apply the suggested change in config.sys also deleting the reference pointing to JAVA11, and rebooted.
Now, LVMGUI recalled by OS2 commands windows appears/works (great, thank you!) , but still nothing happens by clicking on the object icon. I then also applied the properties editing suggested by Ivan, but no changes.
In the images below I show what my LVM icon object properties Program tag contains, and what are the object in the C:\OS2\JAVAAPPS referred folder.
I'm running OS2 Warp 4.52.
Thank you

Applications / Logical Volume Manager GUI not starting
« on: April 21, 2020, 06:53:46 pm »
Hi all, after sometime not having the need to open the LVM by its program icon (in the System Setup folder), today i wanted to have a look on it, but it did not start in WPS.
Then tried in the OS2 command prompt and found:
[C:\]lvmgui
JAVAI.dll not found via JAVA_HOME=C:\APPS\OpenJDK\, so setting JA
11\BIN\..
Unable to initialize threads: cannot find class java/lang/Thread

Said that  from last time I had run it successfully, I meantime installed OpenJDK, now reading the command answer for what is specifically missing, I simply copied JAVAI.ddl from the old JAVA11\BIN directory to the C:\APPS\OpenJDK\ one, but the answer is still same not finding that dll.

Do you have suggestions on how to recover the situation?
Thank you much

Hi

It used to be so easy to print on PDF with "PDF Printer", but I just installed it again and it is not working.
What are you using today to print as PDF?.

Hi Martin, my experience with the physical/pdf printer drivers installation has been painless and still works (very strange indeed in my case).
No cups installed, no additional/workaround services, just PM Printer Manager utility installed from Alex page

http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing/

and two drivers choosen from the available installation list: the PScript generic driver associated to my physical Samsung C460 printer, and a PDF Writer given by the PScript Apple Color LaserWriter 12/600.
I'm not sure if have made it too easy in telling, it was more than 1 year ago, just thinking that if it worked for me then it must work for everybody

Applications / Re: Is the Arca Noae update service worth it?
« on: February 23, 2020, 10:53:09 am »
I started my AN involvement from a slightly different starting line, that being a working OS/2 SMP (4.52) install. The subscription I bought was the Drivers & Software….

I did same in sept 2018 at the begin of my purpose of installing an OS2 Warp4.52 as a virtualbox machine, believing that it was a necessary step in order to have a good repository of software and updates available.
But, frankly talking, I was disappointed finding a poor software availability, consisting in even less of 10% of the free Netlabs repository volume, which I found had a complete software choice to make OS2 working well, and what was eventually missing there I've found then on eCS/2 pages, free as well, including the AN package manager.
So, ok subscribing Arca Noae Drivers & Software once, but no reason to renew it.
And last but not least, the best-quick-competent support that can be received, is in this forum
