Programming / Re: Xpdf v3.04+

Seems the cmdine builds so far, the Qt has some probs to build...

Will look if  i get QT build also

Better than expected! v3.03 is quite old, and they are or were using several libraries.

Apparently the X11-based executable of v3.03 was skipped in the past. Perhaps partly due to related difficulties. Is it an option to release the command-line binaries of a previous version (or this version), and wait for our Qt 5? If so, then a Qt 5-based release will be an upgrade (or an update).

I don't know if it really requires Qt 5, and I assume v3.03 was a "lazy port" ((almost) compile only, without any extraordinary efforts). As such most of the binaries seem to be worth a "lazy port" at least.

I'll attach Xpdf OS/2 icon files (Xpdf.ICO and Xpdf80.PNG), FWIW, based on a v4.01 source file.

Sorry for assuming that WP itself shared the same extras.

It will install under ArcaOS and eCS, but it will only install reliably onto the C drive

FTR: my broken copy of WordPerfect for OS/2 used HPFS drive D: (< 2 GiB) indeed, which wasn't the boot drive.

It looks like v3.04 is newer than the version number suggests. The new PDFTOHTML.EXE and possible new libraries, for example. It's not a minor upgrade.

It's quite outdated software but it would be very interesting to try to use it under OS/2. I have Word 6.0 for Windows that runs without any issues in the WinOS/2 environment but I would very much like to run native OS/2 software when possible.

I'm afraid that a downgrade being interesting doesn't qualify as an added value for a restricted number of developers, while there are several alternatives available. And it may not work, even when it can be compiled without any errors or warnings.

I have lots of old software I like to run because newer versions aren't always better.

The problem is that you aren't able to buy licenses for the older versions anymore.

BTW, in a way DATABASE.TXT is a list of somehow supported 16-bit Win 3.x apps which were popular or "important" in the early 90s.

For some apps cracker-generated codes of the 90s are generally available online. So in theory the office can e.g. buy a modern WinZip code, install ye olde 16-bit WinZip v6.3 , try the bought code, and use a hack when WinZip 6.3 doesn't accept the modern code.

A default memory setting of e.g. Excel in DATABASE.TXT may be a little bit outdated, if you really have to work with it.

That'll be the DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT. In the days of 4 GiB of installed RAM instead of 4 MiB you can safely change Exces' setting 4 to e.g. 8.

instead of the default "DOS=LOW, NOUMB". Loading DOS high caused some issues within the WinOS/2 environment. ... "genaud-v3.1r02" and seems to work when 'EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT' is set to ZERO in the WinOS/2 settings.

FWIW: as you'll probably know, it's possible to set HIGH & UMB settings per (DOS and) Win-OS/2 app. Of course that may require that you use the adjusted WPS object to start the app, instead of using some Windows file manager to execute an app which requires "DOS=HIGH".

IIRC I've deleted my installed copy a while ago (after a backup), because it didn't work anymore.

ArcaOS has a program for this. In Computer->System Setup->Network->TCP/IP is a program called Default Internet Applications which can be used to set all the default internet related apps.

It sets web browser to Firefox and Thunderbird for email if you do a default ArcaOS install. It sets them to SeaMonkey if you install that while installing ArcaOS. They aren't set at all if you don't install any of these when you install ArcaOS.

Thanks. eCS only sets the browser when Mozilla is installed. Just curious: when will those mail settings actually be used by ArcaOS? mailto:-links in e.g. NewView or PDF files, or a WPUrl which starts with mailto:?

The now unfinished app should support all valid Mozilla-combinations with a turbo, including updates (e.g. a modern SM for e-mails, but a downgrade to a different, older SM for faster browsing). If the user enables any of those checkboxes, then the user has to confirm the new settings, which will be applied later. An unverified sample is included below. It installs a turbo and isn't an OS2.INI manager, so in case of the legacy Mozilla browser with an old or new MOZTIURBO.EXE there's only one turbo-related option. There's no support for marking legacy DLL files to allow using memory above 512 MiB. The current, different default browser is set by an eCS install, so that can be changed. If so, then the user first has to confirm the selection. The Apply-button will actually apply all settings, so answering "Yes" won't change the settings yet. So an actual change of the system's setting has to be enabled (if possible and required), confirmed and applied.

Is there a list of which older win32 applications run under Odin?

Probably not. At the moment and in general, excluding hardware-related software, I'd only care about Firefox 87.0.4, Acrobat Reader 42, Office 201x, Flash 33, and perhaps a rare Java 8-based route app. Typically the problem will be reversed: use OS/2 when possible, and Windows when you have to. There's probably no demand for an OS which can somehow execute 80% of your 32-bit software and 0% of your 64-bit software, so compiling a catalogue for a few users has no point. I hardly have any important 16-bit or 32-bit Windows software, so I hardly have Win32-apps I'd wish were available for OS/2.

Most of the time my copy of Windows will be rather busy with updates, and I certainly don't want support for that. Microsoft tends to scan your disks quite frequently, one of their enforced harddisk-torture commercial coffee breaks, which (a.o.) indicates that it's even hard for Microsoft to keep up with new versions or new software, and so on.

For a small community it'll be more important to compile a list of (all) (legacy) software which works fine with ArcaOS, including DOS sound and old Windows apps, to attract new users. As opposed to telling 'em to download and install DOSBox for Windows, for example.

When searching the forum a found an older topic about Microsoft Office but not much else. Do you usually use Odin
For 8.3 FAT file names, i.e. without a last X, v4.3 with an update to support most of a newer Word *.DOC file format (WRD97CNV.EXE) can be a 16-bit genuine Microsoft Office-option, without Odin. A default memory setting of e.g. Excel in DATABASE.TXT may be a little bit outdated, if you really have to work with it.

1. Restore a backup.

2. If the hardware (and/or installed software) of another system is different, then perhaps first try a less radical approach before replacing all WinOS/2-files. MSACM/msacm occurs in a few INI files, which can be verified first.

Under HINI_USER_PROFILE\WPURLDEFAULTSETTINGS (as reported by reged) DefaultMailExe which points to Thunderbird.exe here. Also default "DefaultMailParameters"="-compose" and there's "DefaultMailWorkingDir".

BTW, my Telus account is down so if you sent anything in the last week...
Interesting. Can exactly the same settings be found in OS2.INI, each with a trailing 00'x character? I assumed it was some IBM IAK artifact, because I don't have it set. While the default Mozilla is a DefaultBrowserExe of my eCS, so I've got that setting.

I did, but it does look the default e-mail client setting is an OS2.INI setting. Now I'll first change the code again, to deal with your original request to be able to set this too (Mozilla/SM/TB only, as usual). With support for mixed settings, like SM as the DefaultBrowserExe and TB as the DefaultMailExe. If there's something to change, a new mail executable and/or a new mail working directory, then I'll set "-compose" as a constant value.

And I'm wondering how, where, why and by what a standard e-mail program is set? According to BS_Info.exe my eCS 1.2 install has no such setting.

Programming / Xpdf v3.04+
« on: August 24, 2019, 05:47:48 am »
The latest Xpdf @ Hobbes is v3.03. Apparently, excluding a X11 viewer,  it could be compiled without any source code changes. Is it still possible to compile (and release, please) any newer version of the CLI utilities without source code changes (https://www.xpdfreader.com/old-versions.html)?

Xpdf v4.x.y may require Qt 4 or Qt 5. The latest version (https://www.xpdfreader.com/download.html) requires Qt (5.9.7), FreeType v2.9.1, libpng v1.6.35, zlib 1.12.11 and lcms 2.9. But even v3.0.4 would be an improvement.

readme.os2 of v3.0.3:

Quote
This archive contains Xpdf 3.03 compiled for OS/2.

Only the commandline utilities are included - not the X11 PDF viewer.
The script used for compiling the unchanged Xpdf source is included in the src folder.
