Hi Dave,

While politeness and respect are important, I think it would be kinda crappy to drive away Andreas. While he does need to learn that sometimes it is better to stay silent, he is knowledgeable and has interesting comments at times.

I would prefer Andreas and others to remain in our community because they have a lot of knowledge, and have been helpful in the past but there comes a point when something has to be said to ensure others are not driven away. Andreas simply needs to give some thought and civility to his answers before he replies.

I like people that claim censorship on a forum, you are always free to create your own forum so that you can write whatever you wish but while you have access to a forum run by others, you have to play/abide by that forums rules.

No different to anyone's home you visit, you keep it friendly if you wish to be invited back, if you don't like it buy your own house then you can be yourself in your own home as is your right.

Applications / Re: Open Office 4.1
« on: February 13, 2018, 10:34:45 am »
Hi David,

I already had most of the required files installed from other software but in the readme file for OpenOffice it has:-

Quote
To install the above requirements you have two choices. Either RPM/YUM
installation or WPI installation. If you already have a working RPM/YUM
installation (which includes ANPM), then we highly recommend to use RPM/YUM
only. As mixing both might lead to several issues.

   RPM/YUM installation:
These files can be installed with the following command:
yum install libc libgcc1 libgcc-fwd openssl curl libjpeg libxslt libicu zlib libxml2 mmap pthread urpo libstdc++6 libstdc++
   (all one line)
If some of them are already installed YUM will tell you. Please also
stay current and do regularly a YUM update.

   WPI installation:
Download the AOO-4130-GA-rpm.wpi before you start the installation.
This WPI is not installable. It's just a helper WPI which can be installed from
the main Apache OpenOffice WPI. This WPI *must* reside in the same directory
where the Apache OpenOffice WPI resides before installation.

If you like to do things manually and just grab the DLL's, assuming they are not all in AOO-4130-GA-rpm.wpi you can try dl'ing
files from http://rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/zip/ if your not a yum/rpm user.

Off Topic discussions / Re: Great emulator for PDP-11, Bell Research UNIX
« on: February 06, 2018, 06:25:06 pm »
Hi Andreas,

There are many ways to do something, and anyone that's been around computers long enough to know and remember PDP11's etc would normally like to tinker with many things. What suites you probably doesn't suit someone else, and even though there are different programs that emulate given older generation computers, I'm sure they all have strong and weak points. Each to there own, its fine to point out alternatives, though best done in a nice friendly positive manner, I had forgotten about Ersatz.

Like Word processors, sometimes I will use open office, other times something else. Depends on what I'm doing, why, and which program gets the job done the way I like it done.

[Someone with fond memories of PDP's, VAX's, PRO's, Rainbows and even Robins :)
Each of which had good and bad points but exceptional engineering.]

Create a little commandline cmd file with:-

Quote
for %%f in (*) do eautil "%%f" NUL /S

in it.

Sorry, just realised I forgot to say put the switch you want to use where the /S is, /S will clear the EA's.

Gee's my english is atrocious at present.. to early in the morning.. Fixed my grammar, and spelling!

A good write up, as of what I have currently found is at:-

https://semiaccurate.com/2018/01/04/kaiser-security-holes-will-devastate-intels-marketshare/

I am having a problem in getting my head around how these problems occur and transcribing them to how OS/2 manages it's memory, to soon after Christmas :o)

It would at least require someone to write the software to target an OS/2 box, and some means to get it delivered.

AMD, Arm also affected by data-leak design blunders

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/04/intel_amd_arm_cpu_vulnerability/

There is a nice code snippet link further down that article =>> https://twitter.com/pwnallthethings/status/948693961358667777.
The code is for Windows but it gives the general idea what happens and how.

Hi Dave and David,

WPI files open Warpinstaller ok here, my wifes complaining about corrupt files as well so looks like somethings not right with our internet depending on location. I know the Perth(Australia)-Singapore undersea cable is down again so we are going to the world via USA undersea cable at present via Sydney(Australia). I'll try d/ling file again in a weeks time. Thanks for checking.

A quick side question,

what size is the ahci-2.04.exe package? I see the latest version is a lot smaller, I haven't been able to install it as the file is corrupt so after a couple of weeks I have just re downloaded it but it still shows as corrupt, unable to run the exe or extract the files.

252988         342  ahci-2.03.exe
 98876           0  ahci-2.04.exe

Ian you are a native English speaker I think. Did you understand what Andre is talking here? Do you know what the problem is? Do you understand what he means with f.i. all OS/2 WPA2 DHCP clients?

I does actually stir a distant memory of something not closing down properly with an earlier wpa_supplicant version, so I've run with that. WPA2 I assume means that André is using the supplicant, which comes with the DHCP version from https://www.isc.org/ so I simply make another assumption unless someone wants to correct me :)

One last question, do you really think Andre is human? For me this thread is another proof for sort of AI attack to this forum. Looking at his stats page he seem to have no regular sleeping time too. Although no proof but another sign.

What is human? Sorry, I'm doing Neuroscience and psychology at present at UWA, and that has led to some interesting discussions as to what and when we decide that Artificial Intelligent has really arrived in our little world :o)

I consider spending some time in filling other buzz words here in this thread to see what triggers even more crazy reactions.

Please do, it may provide some interesting information to fill in the gaps. André also uploads a reasonable amount of software corrections and programs to hobbes as well. I'll leave it up to him if he wish's to let others know the name he uses there.

And bang, there is another lot of CD's archived - http://www.os2site.com/sw/dev/developer/index.html

Hi André,

In XWorkplace I'm sure there are different shutdown settings including something along the lines of a forced shutdown, I'm otherwise too busy at present doing some major archiving to check what I have on my thinkpad, which I only use at university (March-May and August-October). All I can tell you is that when I use wpa_supplicant, I simply click on Shutdown from any menu and the thinkpad shuts down without myself having to worry about clicking on anything or killing other process's.

xwp derivatives are programs like the slimmed down version as eComStation provides.

Apparently all OS/2 WPA2 DHCP clients have to show a close-dialog to an user shutting down

It doesn't do that on my IBM R61 laptop, maybe because as Andi mentioned, we all use xwp or derivatives  :)

Hi André,

From memory there is a utility to do exactly what you are talking about as I used it in the early 2000's, I just cant remember what it's called :(
Hopefully someone else will remember it.
