General Discussion / Re: Microsoft to Open Source Windows?
« on: April 09, 2015, 07:14:24 pm »
Hi BigGoofyGuy,

Those articles really don't say much, and to me suggest it would not be MS-Windows if it was open sourced but more likely a different O/S what ever it might be called, as it would need to be started from scratch.

Yes, it might have large chunks of current Windows code and API's but as with OS/2, much would need to be rebuild from the ground up, so a new O/S.
A lot of investment there, can Microsoft see its future in that direction ? Possibly but I don't think it's current work force is geared up for that in a major way.

Microsoft's current Open Sourced projects are islands unto themselves, with many easy to turn over to Open Source simply because they were easy to fence off legally and code wise compared to some of Microsoft's bigger projects.

The main reason IBM didn't, couldn't, and wouldn't open source OS/2 was because it was to hard, to expensive, and trying to figure out the mess left from some code owners that have vanished over the years (both personal and corporate), oh, and considering the amount of code copyrighted to Microsoft :)

It's just plain messy :(

Not going to happen, ever.

If for no other reason as the same reason that OS/2 cant be open sourced, to many cooks in relation to the code.

Internet / Re: Firefox beta 4 released
« on: March 11, 2015, 09:56:33 am »
Thanks Silvan, I got caught by not having the latest libstdc++6 after that but now Firefox is up and running.

Extra DLL's required by  look for firefox-24.8.1.en-US.os2.beta_4.zip
look for firefox-24.8.1.en-US.os2.beta_4_Extra_dlls.zip in Hobbes incoming ,
later in  /pub/os2/apps/internet/www/browser

Why not just use YUM ?
Because I don't have the time or the patience to redo and re organise my computer.
Said with all respect to the developers.

Another way of saying it is, I'm not you, and you are not me, we are different, we are human.
How boring the world would be if we all had to conform to the same template.

I installed the zip versions.
fontconfig-2_8_0-1_oc00.zip  <== actually backlevels the version of fntcfg2.dll
   freetype-2_5_5-1_oc00.zip
into C:\ecs\dll

I renamed my old firefox directory and unzipped firefox-24.8.1.en-US.os2.beta_4.zip
I have all the latest gcc and libc DLL's from when I installed Apache Open Office a couple of weeks ago.

When I try to run firefox I simply get

  "Couldn't load xul.dll"

I havent run highmem on the firefox dll's yet.

There is no exceptq or other log files anywere.
I've read the readme and changes file with nothing that jumps out at me.

General Discussion / Re: New USB drivers
« on: March 10, 2015, 06:18:15 pm »
When I click on USB-11.10.exe

I get

Quote
Script error in line1:The REXX code within the <TITLE>...</TITLE> block failed.
The Macro call was:=("TITLE")

I''ll un wpi it and manually install the files.

I seem to be having a few odd problems over the past few weeks with new software :(

Thanks Wim and Greggory,
Seeing Rob's name reminds me I still haven't dusted off some of my processor Evaluation kit's.

Hi Greggory,

Apologies, I must have blinked and missed it :(

I cant see any undot* there.

can someone email me undot.cmd and who wrote it ?
I'll see if its ok to also put it on [ian at] os2site.com.

I've had several yahoo accounts last decade but they kept cancelling them due to
complaints (no, I have no idea what I'm guilty of and don't care) so I don't have
access to the files section.

I use innotek_ft2lib_240_release1.exe,  I dont think I've tried  innotek_ft2lib_260_beta1.exe but it's 'probably' ok.

Hi Erich,

You might need to uninstall it via Warpin, then ensure you have AOO-4111-GA-rpm.wpi in the same directory as your main
AOO-4111-GA-base-xx.wpi file, if you haven't yet.

And I assume you have read readme_aoo.txt :)

Applications / Re: AOO 4.1.1.1 GA install experience
« on: February 18, 2015, 04:36:27 pm »
On another note, I unstalled the first GA as per the readme, rebooted, installed the second GA
and after some problems figured out I also needed AOO-4111-GA-rpm.wpi as somethings have
changed with requirements between the first and second GA's.

Now I've lost all the file associations, ie, xls, doc files etc, I have to drag them to an AOO icon to
open them. the AOO4 readme says "support for WPS integration via separate package" but
I cant see a separate package on Dropbox, I have not been to the BWW website to look further but I'll
do that shortly. or.. I'll just replace the os2 ini files from the backup I did lastnight and see how
that goes.
