Applications / Re: About eComStation Pricing
« on: October 21, 2014, 11:28:26 am »
Hi Paul,

I would interpretate it as meaning that Doug has noticed people 'demanding' things of you, though I have no idea of who those people may be.

All I can say is I hope no one is demanding anything of you in relation to the OS/2 world, wishing yes, demanding no.

Speaking only for myself, I appreciate all of the software you compile and take the time to listen to feedback on, even if I don't use a lot of it I know it contributes to keeping many people using OS/2.

I certainly would not expect you to do what you do unless you are happy to do it, in your own spare time, as it happens. If others want things to be simpler in installing, I see no reason that they cant spend some time to learn and give back to our community by creating, or helping to create installers and or documentation.

Even Doug creates installers, so it cant be that hard for others to help out as well :)

Said nicely and with respect.

Programming / Remote Exploit Vulnerability Found In Bash
« on: September 25, 2014, 09:28:05 am »
http://www.csoonline.com/article/2687265/application-security/remote-exploit-in-bash-cve-2014-6271.html

A remotely exploitable vulnerability has been discovered by Stephane Chazelas in bash on Linux and it is unpleasant. The vulnerability has the CVE identifier CVE-2014-6271 and has been given the name Shellshock by some. This affects Debian as well as other Linux distributions. You will need to patch ASAP.

Bash supports exporting shell variables as well as shell functions to other bash instances. This is accomplished through the process environment to a child process.

The major attack vectors that have been identified in this case are HTTP requests and CGI scripts.

Applications / Re: Audacity with Odin? Other usable Audio wav (mp3) Editor?
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:46:12 pm »
Very interested !

Just been wresting with Audacity under Ubuntu Studio with a lot of problems, even with the CPU's set for Performance I'm still getting a lot of lag and stuttering.
I've gone back to Cooledit which does run under OS/2-Win, obviously under OS/2.

I tried Audacity under Windows with a SB Audigy card and had no end of problems with getting the input to switch between Line and Mic, that card is simply a no go under Ubuntu but it works fine apart from mixer options under OS/2.

It would be so nice to have Audacity running under OS/2. Happy to leave Hydrogen and my synth's running under Ubuntu, and do all the final mixing and converting, writing under OS/2.

For Dutch users: Imagine that all milk in your shops is imported from Romania, all beef from Argentina, all cheese from Switzerland. Tulips from Turkey, etc. As result, dutch people will spend more time watching TV because of unemployment.

The Dutch would then think of something they are good at and export that. This is part of what free trade is about, breaking down the barriers.
Australia has changed its primary and secondary industries a few times over the past 2 centuries, it's just a part of what life is all about, change, no use blaming someone else, you get on with the job of finding the next thing the world needs and providing it.

Is it joke? Look at Europe Union, one economical zone. Yes, Germany, Netherlands live in prosperity, but Eastern Europe, Greece, Spain automatically become poor. If introduce import taxes between EU member again, then South/East countries will restore their economical state.

It is not Germany or Netherlands fault that Greece and Spain are badly managed by there government's, and that's an internal matter for them to rectify, the longer they leave the mismanagement, the harder it is to fix the problem.

Greece especially knew that joining the EU would require a change within there form of socialism but decided that was someone else's problem.

This all a subject for a 'different' forum :)

Usage of obscene language is not the main thing people take into consideration while assessing other people, Eugene.

True but I reserve that language for American Abuse desks who keep telling me to simply unsubscribe from spam.
oh, and for Disney Studio who provide a digital download edition of Marvel titles that require Flash and a special app for Windows, Mac, or Android only but they forget to tell you than when you buy the BR disk.

Could you edit your posts above and change the wording thanks, that way we keep it 'civil' :)

Hi Dave

I'm glad to see that post, I just emailed Alex :-

"GCC v4.9 to me seems to be a bit unstable, I regressed back to v4.8.2 but thats just me :)"

Hi everyone,

I wasn't saying anything bad about Microsoft, after all, there is Microsoft supplied code
in OS/2 and eComStation, it's about there take on the Open Source model.

It should also be noted that I wasn't saying anything bad about Eugene apart from
basically telling Eugene to leave unrelated and unnecessary  comments about
others from his posts. How Eugene wants to release his code is entirely up to him,
some of us may prefer it if he did open source his (and others) code but at the
end of the day he is free to chose, that what freedom is all about :)

Eugene does on many occasions sound like a Microsoft Code jockey, that's what
that comment is about, no more, no less.

Microsoft does have this thing about code that is Open Sourced (note I didn't say
GPL'ed), they are as time progress's getting a better understanding of shared code,
and difference between the different licensing models and I note that even they are
releasing some code to non core Microsoft products these days, assuming they no longer
want to provide support for that code or program.

Personally I believe it is entirely up to those writing the code, or those paying for the code
as to which license they wish to use. I don't have a problem if someone wants to provide
a closed source code program, or an open source code program, there are reasons for
both just as there are reasons for using a modified or combined license.

Sometimes you are bound by the original code license so there is no choice, and that
applies to Mensys, unless there is a way to rewrite a lot of code..

As I get older I prefer any code I write to be open sourced simply so others can utilise
what I have written on the condition that my details will remain within the program going
forward. I also find it makes life so much easier when you can find code snippets, or
even an open source program that you can 'bend' to your purposes that is close to
what you want, and I do normally thank those people by email as they have saved
me both time, and sometimes frustration. The other thing I have always done is to
send a copy of any changes I've made to code back to the originating author(s) no
matter which license it is.

There are a couple of programs I've written that cannot have the source code released
for private reasons, some are due to ownership is to the company I write the programs for,
and one program that I use on my website that I cant release the code due to the original
authors request, and simply because others have sent me code snippets to include but
none of us are sure were some of those code snippets came from (sound familiar :)).

As I have the website code I could rewrite the program but as I'm really the only one using
it, seems a bit pointless doesn't it :)

Eugene,

You talk as if you have been educated by Microsoft, and your words suggest that you have no idea what 'Open Source' software is, or what it is about.
Until you know what you are talking about, you should refrain from commenting.

I will see if I can find some good links to explain it to you, Martin or someone else might beat me to it.

Also, please read and understand what I have posted here :-

Programming / Re: eCS 2.2 C API documentation
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:18:00 pm »
Hi Eugene,

You do much for the OS/2 eComstation community, so do many others but that is no excuse for you to make stupid comments.

Please keep this civil, anymore inflammatory language and you face being banned from this forum.

That goes for anyone else who makes unneeded allegations, or defamatory statements.

We are adults here, please act like it.

Be a part of the Solution, DO NOT BE THE PROBLEM.

Macs are another alternative, and people seem to make the switch to that environment without too much fuss (I can't get used to mice with single buttons - "cycloptic," I like to call them).

Nothing stopping you plugging in a normal 2 or more button USB mouse, they do work, as do the extra buttons :)
I like to right click to bring up the menu's under OSX.

Applications / Re: Surge protectors, was Re: mmioMP3.dll update
« on: August 03, 2014, 08:51:50 pm »
I have proper surge suppressors (If they blow, they change color) installed in my front power distribution board along with earth leakage current trip relays.

I also use lightning tubes on the phone line, I will know when they have been used and failed, because I wont be typing this ;-)
If I get hit by a direct lighting strike its all toast anyway, just in varying degrees of toasted but that's why we have backups.
You do what you do to minimise the damage, and as with all insurance you trade off between cost, effectiveness and risk.

Inside the house  I only use filtering to remove noise and spikes (fridge, washing machine, vacuum etc).

I have seen surge suppressor power boards that are 'ok' but these have not been the norm. You really have to open them up and know what you are looking for so it's a bit of a lottery. I've also seen ones with a thinner earth lead compared to active and neutral lines... sigh.

I gave up on UPS's, power failures are rare here now, and the UPS normally fry's itself before its really needed.

Setup & Installation / Re: Re-organizaing OS/2-eCS Directories.
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:20:37 am »
The biggest hurdle is as Dave points out, its based on the Warp base.
Consider also updates which expect certain directories to exist.

Though on my own OS/2 and on the server I don't have a \TCPIP or \MUGLIB directorys, many years ago I simply moved the contents to \MPTN
and also remove all reference to \TCPIP, \MUGLIB in config and other places, or modified required values to look in \MPTN instead.

The \IBMGSK were also long deleted off my builds, SSL lives in \MPTN\BIN, DLL, and ETC.
I cant even remember what \DMISL was for now, I removed that from my boot drive at least a decade ago if not longer.

The directories are separate to \OS2 simply as \OS2 is operating system, the other directories are other packages or subsystems that are not
required for the core OS/2.

LANGUAGE and PSFONTS are the only ones that to me anyway, make more sense to be under \OS2.

\MMOS2, would be a pain to move that as I have so many links etc to packages I've installed under it. It is after all, MultiMedia.

I'm sure different people will have different ideas, and that is one of the great things about OS/2, it is flexible :)
As long as you have an idea of whats happening.

Programming / Heinz Zemanek Passes At 94
« on: July 18, 2014, 11:58:13 am »
In 1976, Zemanek became an IBM Fellow and stayed at IBM until his retirement in 1985. He was crucial in the creation of the formal definition of the programming language PL/I. The definition language used was VDL (Vienna Definition Language), a direct predecessor of VDM Specification Language (VDM-SL). He remained a professor in Vienna and held regular lectures until 2006.
