I am not happy with the market of OS/2 artefacts:
1) Yes, the sellers offer boxes with floppy disks and CDs
2) the items are ugly, don't attract attention
3) No stories behind this items
4) No computers with OS/2 pre-installed. Thinkpad laptops are separated from OS/2
5) No people behind OS/2, 0 stories and photos with signatures of famous activists.
6) Books relate to old versions of OS/2 and don't attract attention.

Hardware / Re: Boot 2.2 beta .iso from a USB memory stick?

You can find several interested users and developers, which need the same feature.
They will update the drivers, make experiments.
Mensys is busy with drivers development and CD1 assembly.

You can boot eCS to command line from USB flash disk.

Some users have bootable .iso images.

As I know, we don't have GUI version of eCS / USB flash disk.

General Discussion / What is the agenda for OS/2 today?
« on: November 15, 2013, 08:46:00 pm »
Hello Martin

What is the agenda for OS/2 today?
IMHO, open-sourcing is the direction, we all agree that the OS should include more open-source components.
But it's not agenda of OS/2.

Agenda for today:
What applications to develop to attract new users, extend the market?
What parts of the OS to improve? to modernize the system.

To Martin:

XWorkPlace (eWorkPlace) was developed on eCS money. It's open-source because all efforts of the developer were compensated.

We have created several WPS classes (NeoWPS extenders) . But nobody is interested buy out this modules and make them open-source.
We can't open source as is because we have spend many efforts and resources and didn't returned the investments.
Who will pay for open-source WPS classes? There is no sponsor or service providers (as I said in previous messages).
The developer which will create new class or extender will publish it as shareware. There is no other way to compensate the efforts.

To Doug:
The market of communicators and tablets is a separate market. Huge but different market. Desktop computers and notebooks will not disappear.

1) eCS is situated in other conditions. Different financial situation, different agreements, different market.
So, we have other way.

2) It's difficult compare eCS with Haiku or Linux.

* Linux is supported by large corporations: IBM, ..

* IMHO, eComStation way of development was more effective than Haiku's method of development. We got ACPI early.
We have the market of shareware products.

3) We (all users) support your activity in collection of source code, negotiations regarding abandonware.
But I repeat again, IMHO, eCS will stay semi-commercial (in the next 3 years).

I am not against open-source.

eComStation includes many open-sourced components already.

My message: eCS will stay "semi-open sourced" (partly open sourced), and partly closed.

It's impossible create open source OS/2. As I said, it can be created by several corporations but we don't have this businessmen.
To maintain open source OS you need millions dollars every year. To maintain eCS you need XX thousand dollars only.
There is no funds (capital) on eCS market, that's why eCS is partially closed.

1) Does Voyager project relate to OS/2? I don't this so. As I remember, it was about copying WPS desktop to other platforms.
That's why OS/2 people didn't supported it.

2) Currently people buy eCS licenses. People don't pay for support service to service providers.
In this model, there is no need to open source OS/2 / eCS, All development goes on eCS money. There is no other interested commercial companies.

It will be automatically open-sourced if several companies create solutions based on OS/2, attract many customers, pay for all bills, pay for all development. In this model, this companies will open source own code to cooperate.

But this doesn't happen. So, eCS will stay semi-commercial, semi-open-sourced.

Warpstock Europe 2014:
It's important select right place for the conference.
* "+" Arnhem and Duesseldorf - good choice because the cities are located near to the border  (between Germany and The Netherlands).  And attract more people from this countries.
* "-" On the other side, it's good idea select other place for every new conference

Setup & Installation / Re: Corrupt Partition Table

To Warp:

Do you know the main rule? All partitions (volumes) should be created from eComStation using LVM.
1) create partitions from eCS, 2) Install Windows, 3) Install Linux, 4) Install eCS
