Firefox does what I call CPU trashing.  Based on the CPU monitor, it is extremely high.  Seamonkey does te same thing, but is nowhere near as high as Firefox. Right now I will use Seamonkey since it does a better job utilizing the CPU.

These are some patches I have used in the past.  Are any of these still relevant for ArcaOS?

1. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/patches/PMFIX.zip

FIX1: SYS3171 (Stack Overflow) on PMSHELL.EXE and others. FIX2: USING PM_SystemFonts->DefaultFont CHANGES ALL FORM SIZES

4.http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/cpuspeed1.4.zip

Tries to keep the CPU as cool as possible without affecting system performance by adaptive throttling using ACPI 2.0. Version 1.4.

I tried all four patches and the system seems pretty stable.  I can definitely tell that my CPU load has dropped.

If you read the readme file for the first patch, and then look at the information one is to look for, it appears to me that the patch has not been applied to the pmmerge shipped with ArcaOS.  The version number and file size after expansion match up with what the pmmerge.dll is supposed to look like after expansion and before the patch is applied.

As for number four, I see no adverse reaction to using it.  CPU usuage is down to next to nothing when machine is idle.

I can definitely see a speed increase across the system and so far, not one crash.  In fact, right now, I compare my ArcaOS to a thoroughbred race horse and my windows 7 partition to a tired old nag.  ArcaOS boots faster and is far more responsive than my windows 7 partition.  Every time I add another program to windows 7, it boots slower and is slower doing things.  ArcaOS does not have this problem, especially now with these patches I applied.

I use the XWorkplace startup folder.  I like to slow down how fast the programs load.  Sometimes, I think this contributes to the system hanging.

What has crashed or locked up my computer more than anything is trying various XCenter pluggins that can be found on line.

Where can one go to ask these questions to the ArcaOS development team?  It is said that they are too busy to participate in the forums.  However, the amount of traffic on the forum is small right now and it takes me less than 5 minutes to read through the posts.   One does not even have to respond unless it pertains to an issue the developer may be interested in.  I for one appreciated any time one of them finds time to respond to an issue.

2. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/patches/mixed/pipepatch.zip

This patch will increase the pipe buffer size of pipes instantiated with the pipe operator | of CMD.EXE from 512 bytes to 65024 bytes (by default). This will significantly improove the throughput and reduce the CPU load. In fact it reduces the minimum number of task swiches per megabyte from 4096 to about 33.

3. http://ca-arnold.de/download/newcalls104.zip

patch for pmmerge.dll to increase performance of writing INI-files.

I was doing some testing  using pmdll.  One thing I noticed is that firefox, seamonkey, and thunderbird all have different dates on some dlls.  Seamokey has the latest versions.  I renamed the originals and replaced them with the ones from Seamonkey.  Firefox accepted the latest versions, but thunderbird would fail, not run.  The dlls were lgplibs.dll and mozsqlt3.dll.  I replaced and Firefox 45.9.0 is still working great.  I did not need to revert bacl to the originals.  These are from seamonkey version 2.42.9.

Interesting.
Most of the code is shared between FF, SM and TB with most of the code living in mozilla\ where Firefox is built from and Bitwise is in charge of. In theory all these DLLs should be interchangeable, even xul.dll mostly, at least until you do something specific like try to open the settings/preferences.
I haven't uploaded a new TB in a while, mostly due to the latest changes not having much affect on TB so I guess that is why the DLLs didn't work, still there hasn't been any changes to sqlite3 and the only change made to lgpllibs was a while back to fix a bug dynamically loading the FFmpeg DLLs. I've also been experimenting with building with GCC 5.1.0, so SM is built with a different compiler version then FF and IIRC, TB.
I"ll rebuild TB and upload a new version over the next couple of days. It takes close to 10 hours to build TB here on my old gutless machine and often freezes after about 9 hours so I don't rebuild often.

Using PMSeek, all the file dates and sizes were different with Seamonkey containing the latest file dates.

Replacing both libcx0 and libc066 to the latest versions (which I'd backed up, from libcx-0_6_1-2* and libc066.dll from a testcase one in Jan 2018) appears to have fixed this problem. You might like to try the same as I'm use to using Openoffice, firefox v45.9.0-2, and several other apps at the same time with no problems, including viewing (and mostly downloading) utube videos and university videos from Echo/Blackboard.

Yes, the development of Mozilla and libc, libcx has gone hand in hand and need to be the latest versions for running the latest builds of Firefox.

Yep. Latest version; October 24 2015 3.24.

Though I tried some older versions as well; no difference.

Ben the only other thing I can think of is to uninstall FM/2 and delete the FM2 directory and any files that may be left in it, provided the directory still exist.  Then try reinstalling again.

What version of FM/2 are you using?  The last version was 3.24.

The latest version can be found here

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/fm2/fm2-3-24-0.wpi

and if you prefer an earlier version at the same location:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/fm2

Ben

Try deleting your FM3.ini file.  Then open FM/2 again.  You are going to have to go back and redo your properties settings.

Excellent job Martin.  Good job of explaining the process.  I know that programs can be installed with RPM.  What about file systems and device drivers?  Not that I am a REXX user, but can REXX be utilized during the install process?

When I have shadow icons selected, they show up in all the subfolders, but not on the desktop.

Could you clarify the problem? I don't know what you mean by "When I have shadow icons selected". Are you referring to the option "Mark shadow icons"? If so, then it WFM everywhere.

Hi Rich

Yes , I have the option "Mark shadow Icons" selected.  I just figured out what the problem is and it is something you referred to in an earlier posting.  The problem only occurs in a folder where  Display > Dynamic is selected.  When unselected, the shadow icon appears on the shadow icons as it should.  There is no problem when display dynamic is not selected.  Problem solved.

I'm pleased to announce the first beta for XWorkplace v1.0.12.

Beta 1 is available in five languages and two versions:
- "Full", the standard full-featured build
- "Lite", similar to eWorkplace and ArcaOS Desktop

Portions of this update have been underwritten by Arca Noae, LLC.

I have a problem that has been nagging me for years. It's a nuisance, not a major problem but I'm wondering if anyone here has a solution.

When using the ALT-F! CMD my favourite file manager is FMT. However, whenever I try to load FMT from the boot drive it just hangs with a flashing "_". I can CAD and reboot.

I have the FM/2 directory in my path statements. I have tried *.cmd files with contents like;

'F:
cd \FM2
FMT.exe'

or simply

'F:\FM2\FMT.exe'

but it always hangs the system when in the root directory on the boot drive.

What DOES work is simply changing to F: and then running any of the above *.cmds.

Does anyone have any idea why these problems persist or possibly come up with a CMD that would solve this issue?

Thanks.

I just created and tested with a cmd file in the root directory on bootup.  It worked fine.  Is F the drive that contains the fmt.exe?  The reason I ask is that its config file refers to F drive .  This drive letter is changeable.  I changed mine to D: drive, which is my ArcaOS drive  and my cmd file uses D drive.  One other difference in my cmd file is that I used the @echo off statement at the beginning of the cmd file.

In all the many years that I have used FM/2, I never knew this program existed.  Ben, I thought it came with the utilities package, but was not included.  Then I searched Hobbes and sure enough, it is there.

I have to agree with Dave.  Andreas is very direct and to the point.  He does not sugar coat anything.  I was on the receiving end of one of his hard hitting analysis.  His input can be so hard hitting, one can almost assume he is being attacked for his ignorance or lack of knowledge.  It hurts and yes I can see where peoples feelings can be affected.  Although I did not agree with everything he said, I did appreciate Andreas showing me the errors I made in some of my assumptions.  However, the points I disagreed with him on were small and not worth further pursuit.

I did misunderstand.  Your video did what you intended and I do mean it, you made it look so easy doing this video although I know it required hours of work.  Thanks again.  Your modified system is amazing.  I did notice you mentioned some hardware drivers made for your system.  Are these not available?
