Applications / Re: VLC problems - was Open Office 4.1

I created my own 'VLC' directory and populated it with the exe from 'bin', the dlls from 'lib', and the 'vlc' subdirectory also in 'lib'.

Seems you'd lose access to the plugins going this way as they're often hard coded to use relative or worse, absolute paths.

I don't want to be giving out half-assed advice, so I took your comment to heart and did some testing.

I moved the 'vlc' subdirectory (x:\vlc\vlc) with the plugins and scripts to a more orthodox location (x:\vlc\lib\vlc) but vlc.exe wouldn't start, saying it couldn't find its plugins. Using my simplified directory structure, it had no problem finding them so the relative or hard-coded path issue isn't an issue for vlc.

When I opened "Tools->Effects and filters", my console window displayed a bunch of errors reporting that it couldn't find various video effects. Looking through the 'video_filter' directory, it became obvious that the problem was the various dlls' 8.3 names which were too short and not the usual "file not found" error. Attempts to use these effects caused both vlc _and_ seamonkey to crash, and left me with trashed video that required a reboot.

Rich, setting my VLC up the way you suggested and opening "Tools->Effects and filters", everything displays normally.  I checked other items listed in the Tools menu and it all worked fine.  I had copied all the items listed in the "lib" folder including all its subdirectories to the main folder where I had copied the executable.

Just to add: everybody can always extract the original WIS installation script file from a WPI archive. It's ASCII plain text and the syntax well explained in the documentation that comes with WarpIn.

That is, even for unmaintained WPI packages:
1) we can fix the installation by extracting the original WIS script from the WPI, modifying it to our liking and putting it back into the WPI
2) we can deduce an uninstallation script (Rich's suggestion) from what the original WIS installation script does

The only thing that has always been a mess is that with WarpIn you can easily screw up your config.sys to a point where after uninstallation of a WPI the system will no longer boot. See the FAT32 WPI.
Short rule: NEVER EVER have a WPI script modify PATH or LIBPATH with subdirectory paths that you can expect to exist (like \OS2 or \OS2\DLL).

For those that are not aware of it, there is a very useful program for reviewing wpi files on Hobbes.  This is a front end for reviewing the files enclosed in the WPI, the wis script, and and if the config.sys is to be modified.  It can unpackage the files and also save a copy of the wis script to anywhere one wants.  This helped me tremendously when I was writing wpi's for my eschemes years ago.

...I found the problem with VLC3.  I had to add the its "lib" folder to the Libpath statement in the config.sys,  It now works as it should....

[...] a more flexible/safe way would be to create a vlc.cmd file in the VCL directory which modifies the LIBPATH for just the VLC session, that way the VLC install will not impact anything else on your system. Here is what's in my vlc.cmd:

=== START ===
SET BEGINLIBPATH=G:\apps\multimedia\vlc2\usr\local\lib;%BEGINLIBPATH%
G:\apps\multimedia\vlc2\usr\local\bin\vlc.exe %1
=== STOP ===

...then my VLC program object simply points to the VLC.CMD script.
I created my own 'VLC' directory and populated it with the exe from 'bin', the dlls from 'lib', and the 'vlc' subdirectory also in 'lib'. I dragged the exe to the Desktop so the WPS would create a program object and I was done - except for deleting all the unnecessary garbage that was left behind.

Thanks Rich! That was an even better solution.  It was so easy what you suggested.

It worked great.  One more question.  A command prompt comes up before the program starts.  The program starts with the command prompt in the background.  I tried settings in properties to minimize the command prompt after it starts, but nothing works.  Any suggestions?

Thanks Dariusz!  I am going to give it a try.  I have been wondering if I would have to keep adding to my libpath statement every time I use one of these ported programs.

All free of charge of course.

Nothing is "free'. You either put some effort into helping, or you support it by paying for it. Anybody who thinks it will come "free" is dreaming.

Hi Doug.

I disagree. There are people that like to help other for free. There are people that runs websites, compile software, create kernels and answer forums for free with the goal to help people and their communities.

I think their is no disagreement between you two.  What you have stated is what Doug means.  One either puts in time receiving no monetary return or or one does it for some monetary return.  It's either time or money.  That's what he means by nothing is free.

[valerius] LewisR EA would be supported like FAT, e.g. with emulating
EA's via files, it it's needed. But the main purpose of ext2
support is not using as an OS/2 partition, but more as a means
           for exchanging data with Linux.

I think this is a good point Valery brought up during the chat session.  By the way, thank you Valery for a fully functional fat32 driver! I downloaded your latest driver and it works great.  This is a must for every non Windows operating system.  If we want to lure Linux users to try out ArcaOS, it needs an updated ext2 driver for them to access their linux systems.   I agree with Valery that it is needed for the exchange of data.  This could be another selling point.  It would be nice also if there was a working NTFS driver for ArcaOS.  I have tried Netdrive and it will not work (unless I have done something wrong).

[LewisR] VMs: Do we need VMs as in running ArcaOS as a hypervisor?

[LewisR] I don't see a 32-bit OS as a very useful hypervisor, personally,
though there are reasons to run smaller OSes under ArcaOS.
[Roderick] Well I tried the BWW Virtualbox and one big issue is that
ArcaOS can only use 4 GB of RAM. We have the new loader that
           you can use a ramdrive.

Is it possible to do on-the-fly RAM compression to increase the amount of RAM available?   Have 4 GB available , but when compressed, have more of the 4GB of RAM available for use. Remember when hard drives were compressed (Stacker 4 for OS/2, Zipstream) to give people more space due to the limitation of the drives back in the late 80's and early nineties. Due to the speed of RAM, there might not be too big of a performance hit.

With ArcaOS, one can now create a RAM drive and put in low and/orhigh memory.  If this were feasible, an option could be make available to compress the RAM drive.

I wonder if 7-zip could be utilized to do any of this.

7-Zip is probably the leading free file compression software for Windows with its amazing ability to shrink files on the fly. It has advanced functionalities that include the capacity to produce solid and self-extracting archives as well as to modify password protection and compression level. Albeit it has a minimalistic interface, it is easy to understand and operate. 7-Zip supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM, and DEB. For a free software, the performance is close to perfection. stated by RAMESH NATARAJAN on SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 -Top Five File Compression software

Great job.  Your modified system was awesome.  Great job putting the video together.  You made it look easy.

One thing I would liked to have seen and what you can put in your next presentation is what ArcaOS looks like today; OS/2 then and ArcaOS today. You showed the capabilities of the OS, but you did it showing old graphics.  You demonstrated that the ArcaOS is very backwards compatible to running DOS, Windows, old OS/2 programs.  My first impression was an old operating system running old programs.

What can ArcaOS do today?  You demonstrated that it is very backwards compatible to old programs, but what  other things can ArcaOS do today?
1.  It is still being developed.
2.  It's WPS (GUI) has no equal among any other other operating system.
3.  Updating software has never been easier using RPM
4.  It is not the resource hog that Windows is.  The more programs you install in Windows, the slower it gets.
5.  It has the internet capabilities that all modern operating systems require.
6.  Its look is modern and can be easily changed to one's taste.
7.  Its JFS file system is one of the most versatile and stable file systems out there.
8.  Open office is available for ArcaOS. (ArcaOS needs to get that missing RPM package "libxsit" included with the next update to make installation problem free).
9.  For people who are tired of having their every keystroke monitored and what they are doing on their computers logged.  That don't like the idea that someone can secretly enter their system and record and listen to their chat using the computers web cam

Can you rename your video?  Call it OS/2 then.  The new one Call OS2/ArcaOS now.  Or OS/2 Past.  The new one "OS2/ArcaOS today.

ArcaOS should include links to the development tools needed for those that might want to try their hand at developing software.  This would appeal to any Linux folks that may want to try their hand at software development.

Hardware / Re: Limitation on using an USB DVD and CD writer under ArcaOS
« on: February 18, 2018, 09:19:05 pm »
Even with Rich Walsh's cdrecord, burning ISO to USB DVD causes an error.
To use USB DVD writer, install Full DVD Toys + old cdrtools (from the site of DVD Toys)

The version of cdrecord I posted was taken from the "old cdrtools" posted on the eCoSoft web site.

Unless DVD Toys uses some magic commandline option that the AOS version doesn't, then the full-featured version is also likely to fail on Neil's system.

I believe Neil is referring to burning DVDs with RSJ writer.  As stated earlier in the post, problems occur with both DVD Toys and RSJ writer installed on the same system.  Using the old cdrtools,  DVD Toys has no problem burning, but won't work with the cdtool.exe that comes with ArcaOS.  Now go to RSJ Writer and the writer cannot find (at least in my case) the USB DVD writer.

I must tell everyone that I like using DVD Toys,  It has a polished up to date up look and it made burning the iso so easy.  I have both programs, but will continue to use Toys from now on.  I assume that DVD Tools can do everything that RSJ writer can do.

Froloff in his documentation said he would send to anyone his code changes if requested.  However, I could be mistaken, but the impression I get is that he has disappeared off the map.

Killer application is the topic #1.

There are 2 ways: 1) degradation and shrinking of the market  OR  2) expansion and growth

No killer application - no sellings of new licenses. If the killer application exists, then 1 license can be sold today.

I think you both are correct.  The problem presently is limited resources and how to best utilize them.  The lack of eComstation development the past few years has set the platform back tremendously and hurt the developers who supported it.  In fact, I am sure a lot of them felt betrayed and some left.  Then there are those that think like I do that the WPS has no match on any other platform.

I for one have been waiting for WIFI for around 7 years.  In fact, I was forced to use my wife's Mac because I had no easy access to an Ethernet outlet.  Yes, I could have bought a laptop with Windows, but I did not care to.  I don't like it being a resource hog and I don't like being tracked on my computer and internet.   However, seeing that OS/2 was being developed in its present form, I broke down and bought a refurbished laptop so I could test and see what has changed.  Yes, I have to use Windows for some things, but I don't like it.

Other thoughts I have.

1.  WIFI, USB3, and printing are a must just to continue to operate.

2.  I don't think we have to worry about ArcaOS being a gaming platform since most gamers now prefer their gaming consoles.  However, small games like card games, poker games and Mahjong would have an appeal so long as they graphics are well done, enjoyable to play, and the software reasonably priced.

3.  It will have to have what everyone else has such as internet browser and emailer.

4.  People will have to have access to an up-to-date office suite.  Open office development must continue.

5.  PMView needs to be supported by the OS/2 community so we at least have some grahics capability.

Anyone ever played Warcraft or Starcraft back before online gaming became very popular?  One always started out overwhelmed by the opposing forces.  One had to build up ones resources fast just to just to stay alive long enough to counterattack the opposing forces.

I believe Roderick is correct that the base itself needs to be updated.  I like YUM after having used it.  Eugene is correct that a killer application will go a long way to bring in the youngsters.  One of the problems with a killer app is that Windows has no shame stealing ideas and possible code.  Remember back when it was believed that they were using Netscape coding in their software.

Eugene, what do you think the next killer app will be?

One point ArcaOS developers can do is ensure that their are no back doors into their operating system that allows the alphabet agencies access to computers.  Make the system as hack proof as possible.  This could be a major selling point.  How fool proof is it against viruses?  Can a Windows virus bring down the system?

This is just my thoughts from an end users perspective.

Setup & Installation / Re: arcaos 5.0.2
« on: February 18, 2018, 04:43:06 am »
Dave

Thanks  for the reply.  The only 7z package I downloaded
is labeled ArcaOS-5.0.2.iso.7z.
Unpacking. results in one folder labeled ArcaOS-5.0.2.iso,
inside one data file labeled ArcaOS-5.0.2.iso
I have found nothing so far labeled arcaos-5.0.2-en.iso
Regards
Phil

My download was also labeled as yours.  I installed to my computer, however, I have not tried to make an USB boot copy yet.  No -en in the iso file description.

I contacted bitwiseworks and it he stated "Most probably you miss the xslt rpm."

Again, where can this file be found?

I went through the readme.1st and decided to try the rpm install of the other necessary components.  In YUM quick install I typed

yum install libc libgcc1 libgcc-fwd openssl curl libjpeg libxslt libicu zlib libxml2 mmap pthread urpo

The one component that I did not have and did not come with ArcaOS was the "libxsit".  It installed and I rebooted and now I have a working Open Office 4.1.  I hope my experience can help others.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  When in doubt, use tthe quick install.

Hi David,

did you open a Command Prompt window and startet VLC or AOO from there? This usually tells you what is missing.

Hi Moritz

I found the problem with VLC3.  I had to add the its "lib" folder to the Libpath statement in the config.sys,  It now works as it should.  The VLC program object kept saying it could not find the VLC.exe even though the program object pointed right to it.  It finally dawned on me that maybe it could not find the dlls.   Once the lib folder was added to libpath, everything works as it should.

Will check OO later.  Thanks

I just now had a chance to view the Arca Noae Package Manager.  I am impressed.  It makes it so easy to update and install RPM.  Great job to the developers.  However, I encountered one problem.  It was while I was messing with both DVD Tools and RSJ writer I encountered the problem.  This is with the latest version of YUM.

I deleted the CDRTools 3.01.1-1 using YUM.  After trying various thing, I went to reinstall the program.  When accessing the DVD for the RPM, it was the one package it couldn't find even though it was still on the DVD.  I then tried doing it with FM/2 through association.  YUM would start, show the file, I would select it to install and it went through the motions like it was installed.  However, when the depository reappeared, no CDTools.

Finally I went to Quick Install.  Typed in "YUM install cdrtools 3.01.1-1"

It downloaded and installed without a problem and now appears in the package manager.

Still no go.   I have updated everything that can be updated.  As far as I can see, I have everything needed.  I am going back to version 3.2.

Something else.  I downloaded VLC3.0.  This does not work also.  Hoewver, VLC2.8 worked just great.  Has anyone else seen this?  I am going to have to go back to VLC2.8
