Networking / Re: Network clarification question
« on: September 12, 2014, 06:44:35 pm »
So, the main's router owner could be that he say right.
Since some sites are not available for me, i thought it was the firewall or a particular configuration of both routers.
Should i ask for a better configuration?

Networking / Network clarification question
« on: September 12, 2014, 06:23:14 pm »
Hi,
Could not be the right place this, sorry, but i need a clarification about network connections. Where i live we are three users to share the same Internet connection, a main router, and a wireless one, connected to main, used by two users, including myself. Is there a way to get the my connection completely open like for the main router? The main's router owner says the open connection is available only for his router and for a single connection, so if need to see some sites with restrictions/limitations, behind a firewall, as we, wireless users, are, i always have to ask a favor to the owner of the main router, could not be a problem, sure but he could be bored on long time.
Is this true or is it possible to configure a "double" opened connection?
Thanks for any suggestion.

Hi all,
The Italian community of OS/2 users would planning the conversion of most of the manuals in "inf/hlp" format for the development tools available on our platform into printable pdf format, ready for printing purposes by developers, to facilitate their wonderful efforts. We believe it is an excellent initiative, because the classic paper book is always useful and sometimes faster than internet to navigate and it should be always available for a developer.
If the initiative is welcome, we need a list of the main most used toolkit or otherwise most requested.
We will upload all on Hobbes.

Hi Barbara, that would be great, many thanks  :)

What's the best way to get the files to you? Shall I attach here?
Yes i think as attach is right, let me only remember all the steps i made  to convert it :P !

Would I be able to have a copy of the VX-REXX PDF too?
I put it in /pub/incoming just now
I have a license for that somewhere, but I lost the media ages ago and I don't think I ever got beyond installing it. I keep on the lookout for it coming up on eBay but so far no joy. I'm not sure about the legal status of VX-REXX though, so that may not be possible. I know Watcom open sourced the C/C++/Fortran compilers but I never heard anything about Rexx.

Actually, I wonder whether it would be worth popping the PDFs on hobbes for access by a wider audience?

Anyways, thanks again for your very kind offer

JY
Maybe i wrong putting it on Hobbes?
VX-REXX is "Abandonware" now and it is also available on internet, the same for Vispro/REXX (i remember the author itself release it as "freeware", without sources).
Can someone explain right the limitations of these licenses please?

Hi there,

If anyone has a printed copy of the VisPro Rexx manual that they would like to donate or sell at a reasonable price (inc postage to the UK), could you let me know?

I have the manuals as inf files but I prefer to use books on the whole.

Hi Jean-Yves,

A pdf conversion from the bundled books in inf format, ready for print, could help you? I made the same for vx-rexx, and now i have my personal printed book edition, really usefull.
If you send me the inf you have, i could convert them.

So is there someone around having such a thing, even if it is not working anymore or does know someone or someplace where to buy it? Even if the Akku does not charge anymore - that would not matter, because the electronic inside is very important an I do know how to replace the cells.
Hi, Sigurd, can you explain us in detail how do you maintenance your notebooks (periodic revision, complete disassemble, cleaning, times, materials and so on) and how to replace cells? Since i'have an old IBM Thinkpad T23 I care so much, gift that I had when I graduated. I do not have a lot of skill to do myself (i only clean it superficially using a a damp cloth), but I have friends and students very good at doing these things, I always ask them.
If I learn how to do it myself shall become definitely less boring for my friends and ask them only work at certain levels.
Thanks!

If there are programs and resources available for productivity shared on the net I do not know, but for a math teacher is an excellent tool for introducing students to math and programming: they learn math apparently playing and with fun and at the same time learn how to convert an algorithm into lines of code immediately visible step by step, they will be great programmers using this teaching method, believe me  :D !

Hi, seem that the Agena programming language is not more developed for our community, i asked to the author for an update. I think that for study is a great software. Waiting for an answer.
Agena is now at 2.2.6 version, and we are at 1.1.3, does we need also the gdi and the agenaeditor?

Setup & Installation / Re: Is eComStation DEAD?

Certainly respect all your points of view, but also do some considerations, and evaluate them without the devotion and love of the passionate, partly because I too am an OS2 fan:
If I plan a project that resembles a complete rewrite of an operating system (based on which model, open or closed source is of little importance) and I have only two programmers, I know that in the best case the first goals reach them in 15 years, probably, if I have, instead, 500 programmers, I reach the goal in 5 years. Users want to continue to use this system because bla .. bla .. bla .. What should I do if I only have 2 programmers in the meantime? tries to answer yourself.
Mensys/SSI has not pursued any similar project that would point to a definitive resolution of the problem by rewriting from scratch essential parts of the operating system (if I have not the original source code what should i do? Have to rewrite it from scratch, are you agree?) but aimed only to take IBM OS/2's users-park and maintain it, okay, a small software house, requires short-term goals .. bla .. bla .. bla, well, corporate policies, that's fine, but You have totally missed the goal.
A team of programmers led by engineers really motivated would have
dealt with the problem looking forward and with a lot of breath, a visual much more extensive, they would have to figure something reliable in short-term (achievable goal even with few resources) and then after 14 years (help me to say many!!!), collaborating with the OSFree team, given that the resources were few, they would given you at least the first tenderly child of a new, fully regenerated OS2. They would not waste time to adapt, try to configure, a patch here, another there .. blah blah blah, does not give me the code? well, I'll rewrite alone, but it takes the time it takes, and to not lose my clients, they would study a valid alernative, knowing that this alternative tomorrow will be useful.
I want to express this concept when I say that with a different point of view we would not have wasted time and resources.
Again, forgive the outburst.

Exactly what i was trying to say, David, especially at the point where we arrived, it was worth waiting 14 years? also paying for a software subscription? for what?  if I install the last port made by Qt4 and I'm missing something I do not have maybe type rpm install update reinstall etc.. etc?
Was necessary Mensys/SSI?, sure not!
What changes if under a WPS completely rewritten and identical to the original, if not improved, there was BSD/UNIX or something similar using instead an hybrid kernel only for our OS? Is not this always a solution linux-style?
The user experience would not been changed of course, and in addition we would not have had so many problems, certainly curiosity would attracted many users and programmers, and when the new OSFree would be ready, all this time and this software certainly would have been useful.

I totally agree with you, Martin, but I repeat, just a start-up, if motivated programmers wanted to understand how WPS was structured, with or without SOM, perhaps to integrate also after, I do not think that they would had problems, especially Mensys/SSI, without resorting Netlabs programmers, that miracles they have done really a lot!!
I only say that with a different point of view we do not waste time and resources.
