Article Discussions / Re: AN changing USB driver stack to 32-bit

It would be nice to have USB 3
A new ASUS H270M PLUS motherboard did not have any working USB. The backward compatible part did not work.
I added a StarTech USB 2.0 card with a Via chip set and all is well. I then had to convert to case wiring to allow USB 2.0 on the front panel.

The joys of OS/2.

Am I missing something? What does a DDK license have to do with a new interface designed by AN. That by definition is an AN product. They would be free to disclose the interface.

Simply use a text editor and start listing the the header files and add some usage info.

What am I missing?

Applications / Re: Lotus WordPro for OS/2 under ArcaOS

I am running the Lotus Smart Suit for OS/2 installed on ArcaOS without issue.
If you want to be extra safe. Make a copy of config.sys before installing Lotus.
Do all the conversions you want. Then revert to the old config.sys

I found in my collection of hardware a Radeon X800 which was never used. Still in the box. That works nicely in 1920 x 1200.
Now, I would like to install more machines. So any suggestions?

You should have heard about the CPU flaws which are being called security risks.

1. They are real.

2. Not new news.

3. Only a problem if you use the internet.

Well, that said, mostly only a problem if you use software from bad sources or use a web browser or email package.

Yes, just using a web browser or email package is sufficient to be attacked. It does not matter what you actually do.

This is like the old Windows 3.1 days where viruses were everywhere and all you could really do was not share floppies.

Now, what to do?

1. Use Arcaos.

2. ???

Ok, so Arcaos has email and web browsers.
But, it is not a target OS for hackers. It would require OS/2 specific code to do the hacks and the code is not easy.

One more thing to not do. Don't use cloud computing. That is hard to do if you do much on your phone.

Another note is that the hacks take advantage of peeking into programs other than the one doing the peeking.
So, a person who does many programs at once, especially sensitive ones, is most at risk.

I have seen new video card (graphics cards) that only have a few vesa modes. One is the GeForce 710. A Radeon HD 6450 has 1920 x 1440 but does not want to allow 1920 x 1200 with Panorama. What I was wondering is if there are any "new" cards that have a PCIe bus and will display at 1920 x 1200. I have have many older cards that work with Snap and Panorama. Does anyone have actual experience with a card that is still being manufactured?

Programming / Re: OS/2 kernel requiring speculative execution patch!!!!

It would seem without the specifics on the problem and how software can exploit it then all the comments above are pure speculation.

Are there any video PCIe video cards that  can do 1920 x 1200 resolution?

Utilities / Re: Arcaos version info

Thanks, it looks like this:

[C:\sys\install]type install.flg
ArcaOS 5.0.1 EN
Built 2017-07-09 13:59:48

That is helpful because I can forget things.

General Discussion / Re: Abandonware
« on: December 02, 2017, 03:53:47 pm »
If something is "abandoned" it would seem that the person or group abandoning it is the owner. Last time I checked you could not leave software on the side of the road or send it to the dump. So there is no real abandon ware. The owner would have to give up rights of ownership through some physical means such as an email or letter. Preferably an open letter to say the product is "abandoned" or more simply free for all.

As a developer I live off my work of writing and maintaining software. I do not do it for free.
I used to do some patches for other peoples work and give them out for free but no lately.

Utilities / Arcaos version info

Does anyone know how to display version info for Arcaos?
The OS/2 version can be displayed and eComstation had a file containing the installed version but where is the Arcaos version info.

When I designed an internet protocol for communications in the 1970s I had to make it work on very bad dial up lines. Now I can still use the protocol with the new crappy internet we will have.

Programming / Re: SQL/DBExpert
« on: October 24, 2017, 10:31:04 pm »
It is unclear what you are trying to do.
First, I have never used DBExpert but have used many other SQL engines.

INSERT can be used to create new rows in a database but cannot alter existing rows.

Your description sounds like you are trying to update a field in a row of a database.

That is done with the ALTER statement.

General Discussion / Re: Arca Noae Website
« on: October 24, 2017, 01:47:06 pm »
I complained vigorously to about the website and did not get a reply.
It is clear the back end software used is very bad.
I have been using OS/2 for a web site with applications running for 17 years without problems. The slow response of Arca Noae is clearly a programing issue.
I actually live a short distance from Arca Noae's office. Maybe they need some consulting.

Applications / Re: IFX is examining and cleaning your INI files...
« on: October 19, 2017, 10:27:27 pm »
Yes Roberto, I understood you were referring to how to avoid the problems in the first place.
I have reloaded drive C: from ArcaOS 5.0.1 and now things seem to be good.
IFX runs clean after setting up the desktop and I have made archives of the ini files that work.
The system had become very unstable and the fixes would not run so a reload was needed.

Now to hopefully not encounter the issue again.
