I don't have such a program. I don't think it comes with the Convenience Pack.

You're right. It never shipped with any level of the Convenience Packages. That was the reason I gave you the resulting entries for your config.sys. Later USB driver packages from SWC/PPA included the USB 2.0 support.

If you have only CP2 the included USB drivers in \OS2\BOOT should be at revision 10.058. You can check it with the command BLDLEVEL. The OS/2 Device Driver FixPak (XR_D003) includes files at 10.070 revision level - but also no USB 2.0 support.

You have 4 PCI USB UHCI host controller(s)
You have 1 PCI USB EHCI host controller(s)
With a T41 it should be usually 3 UHCI and 1 EHCI. The reaseon for 3 entries of the same driver in your CONFIG.SYS.

Using the USB drivers which are installed from the CD doesn't seem to give me access to any USB stick I've tried.. maybe it's a hardware problem, but having said that, I can boot from USB, so it must be OK.

So the system installation was done from an external USB CD-ROM drive?

Simply use LVM on the USB storage to create a partion.

I attached 2 files built from ddk sources that should work with a CP2 without any fixes and additional device drivers.

I have entered this into my CONFIG.SYS, but my 128MB FAT formatted USB stick (the smallest I could find) does not show up in the drives folder, even after clicking on Refresh Removable media. Not sure what you mean by 'being prepared for OS/2 LVM usage'..

The USB storage should contain a partition. Non-partioned superfloppy (also with FAT) will not be recognised by this level of USBMSD.ADD.

Dmitry, your explanation fills in some holes but does not explain why if our computers have been running for more that a week we can start, for example, Open office 4.12 but if after closing it we can not start vBox 5.06 and trying to restart OO throws a fault of not being able to open SC.DLL.  At that stage even EPM which we use as our standard text editor stops responding and we have to reboot.
At this stage: Are you able to start a new process of EPM from command line (start epm)?

The crazy idea of mapping shared libraries to OS/2's dynamic link libraries is simply a disaster and not a solution. It works to some degree with C code. But there are more things to consider when it comes to C++ stuff. A lot of stuff that uses this libc and the additional libcx hack violates the OS/2 ABI or has side-effects with existing programs. The biggest flaws are in process and memory management - especially shared memory usage.

I've been installing OS/2 CP2 (4.52) over the last couple of days to try and get up to speed. I had forgotten that it came with USB drivers and that by default they are commented out in CONFIG.SYS, I've just uncommented all eight of them but have no idea what to expect. What can I do with these drivers? ... I can't seem to read a small USB stick.

I know there are updated drivers available, I just wondered if the original ones actually did anything?

You should have something like this in your CONFIG.SYS file.
Code: [Select]
REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBUHCD$
REM BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD

It only offers USB 1.1 capabilities, but it should be enough for small file transfers from USB storage devices that are not too large as long they are prepared for OS/2 LVM usage.

You should replace it with this section:
Code: [Select]
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBUHCD$
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:4

Applications / Re: Recommendations: File Managers?
« on: June 15, 2017, 10:18:32 am »
Nowadays there are not much options. File Commander/2 (FC/2) was already mentioned. It may sound strange but I recommend to use the later versions only in a WPS environment. So be not surprised about data losses when running in a PM-only environment. For the most basic tasks it works but tends to consume a lot of resources. Additionally the support for archivers is not as good as it could be. Some of the shortcomings can be avoided by using external tools.

In my opinion the only alternative is DOS Navigator (DN/2 Open Source). But it will need more time for customisation because there is a huge amount of bells and whistles. Fortunately the archiver support is more advanced which makes it possible to copy a whole directory structure into a Zip archive for instance. It also recognises and handles self extracting archive files. That's not everything you can access bundle files (OS/2 native archives created with pack) and diskette image files.

The third option would be the file manager which is simply called F. The user interface is different but similar to IBM E editors (EPM) and also offers a own command language. http://filemanager.free.fr/beta/index.htm

Under https://www.joschs-robotics.de/dosbox, I uploaded an installer package of Atari++, as well as a zipped distribution of CC65 fresh from the press aka just fetched from Github.

Sorry, the links in the html document are not working:
https://www.joschs-robotics.de/dosbox/cc65.zip, but I have no clue about the atari++ filename.

What's your makeshell set to? Is the PMMail makefile written for sh or cmd.exe? You could try
Code: [Select]
set MAKESHELL=cmd.exe

Additionally the setting of environment variable EMXSHELL seems to be preferred by some tools.

Unfortunately the language and readme files for german is for version 0.63. It would be more user friendly to integrate the latest form http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 to the installer? Of course the README files in windows CP1250 should be converted to CP850.

Utilities / Re: problems with sh.exe

I've successfully installed PostgreSQL in the past.
One has to use initdb.exe and the various executables to create databases, add tables, data and functions etc.
I decided to try once more, but now stumble on messages that sh.exe can't do this and that.
I've tried to rename ash, bash, dash to sh but the problem remain.
What has been changed and why? Fix?
Better don't ask. All this stuff behaves like crap when installed via RPM. I would recommend to use simply Korn Shell or pdksh (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/shell/pdksh-5.2.14-bin-7.zip). It seems the packagers of the RPM stuff have no clue about how a shell works under UNIX, so don't expect that it will work under OS/2.

Programming / Re: How to build Seamonkey?

It seems to me as if the problem is caused either by a missing file which is not installed via RPM or my environment settings are incorrect.
Any thoughts about that? :(
I know the last build instructions are quite outdated. But it's better to start from them IMO. I don't know if MakeOmfLibs.cmd or other stuff will be done automatically during RPM installation. By installing too much untested stuff from the RPM repos which lacks any usable documentation it will not be a working solution.

Just came across EMT4PM Diskette imager  - http://dvalot.free.fr/OS2programs.html

Seems to have quite a lot of options, but don't know if it does exactly what I want... Let's suck it and see...
Ok, it depends on the source and destination format of your disk image files. You cannot determine the format only by the filename extension. A raw image file (disk.dsk) can be simply renamed by CMD.EXE's built-in REN command to disk.img and needs no further conversion. A good indication is the file size of 1474560 bytes (for 1.44MB HD) or 737280 bytes (for 720K DD).
The best practice for different image formats is using EMT4PM in conjuntion with a virtual floppy disk driver (VFDISK or SVDISK). There's no need for a physical floppy drive or emulation device. IBM's LOADDSKF/SAVEDSKF and XDFCOPY can also work with virtual floppy drives.

OK, it seems that I needed the libtool package, now at least autoconf runs without error, but it does not create a config.sub and so the build fails with the same error as before:

Did you really installed everything from the list?
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Developer_guide/Build_Instructions/OS2_Build_Prerequisites
The right version of autoconf and m4 is quite important for building under OS/2.

Not all GNU utilities that now come precompiled in RPM packages have the same behaviour. So it would be a good idea to keep working versions of them.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS: Impossible to install!

That's totally wrong. VirtualBox is quite slow and less acurate compared to other solutions. There is also no integration for OS/2. The guest driver misses all advanced features. The mouse driver integration can only be used in 1 PM session - better not try fullscreen OS/2 or DOS sessions including Win-OS/2-fullscreen.

I disagree with you Andreas and your "That's totally wrong" statement is your own personal opinion. My installation of eCS under VirtualBox is working fine, it may not be perfect but it is very comfortable to work with OS/2 on a VM, specially when you are testing different kind of software and configurations.

I was not talking about a working limited set of features that may be suitable for testing purposes. In real world applications it's only possible to utilise 1920x1200 resolution inside a DOS full screen session of an OS/2-VM by using Virtual PC. Which also offers more reliable networking btw. If you can disprove the nuisances mentioned earlier then please show an evidence!

You might be surprised.  VirtualBox is free, fast, and it has an integrated desktop environment which allows applications on the desktop inside of OS/2 to pop out onto your Linux desktop so they are fully integrated.  I've never tried this with OS/2, but I have used it with various flavors of Windows.
