Neither PNG nor SVG are Icon formats. Even newer Window releases use an (different) ICO format which is also a bitmap array and can also store PNG images inside of it. Or take a look at Apple Icon Image format (*.icns) which additionally can include JPEG 2000 images.
It's the task of the Presentation driver to select a suitable size for displaying icons. Otherwise there will be a fallback to device independent format. No reason to use this buggy hacks.

FWIW, ArcaOS does include a feature called PNG desktop (Sunny Icons).  This version works a lot better than what was in eCS 2.2b2. It also includes FOC (File Open Control), which was also in eCS 2.2b2. I think it has also had some updates, but I am not impressed with the whole concept, and I don't use it, other than to see if it causes problems (so far, no problems).
"PNG desktop" a "feature" - that looks very pathetic. Neither any application nor any known device driver is using this so-called feature. It's only a Potemkin village. Why not simply using OS/2's own icon format? It seems ArcaOS will only be eComStation with a new background image.

It's widely known that they will never release it as open source.

Thank goodness! Nobody needs this crappy stuff. It consists mostly of open source libraries repackaged into a larger DLL. The libraries are of no earthly use.

It's quite useless to reply to those false claims. Before posting here I checked everything twice also with the broken GSview 5.0 and as everybody can see from the image also with PostScript printers. Of course only with printers that support Level 2 or 3 of the PostScript language. If you still want to print with GSview to an older PostScript printer you should use the latest GS version which supports the pswrite device.

GSView 5.0 doesn't support OS/2 as everybody can read. Neither the gs 9.18 hack nor the gsview 5.0 hack are supported. The best advise I can give is to never follow any instruction from the half-RPM almost non-existing docs.

gzip is available for many OSes, but on its own *.tar.gz looks like a typical, over-engineered UNIX solution to me.
gzip is not UNIX - it's GNU. It doesn't care about tar or anything else. It simply does compression in most cases.

Quote
Until now I've never needed a *.tar file (nor really wanted the OS/2 equivalent of an uncompressed archive), and used one UNTGZOS2.EXE (instead of executing 7z twice) to get rid of both the gz and tar part.
Otherwise tar is an UNIX command. The file format was specified in IEEE P1003.1. But only POSIX.1-2001 (pax) allows longer pathnames, charset coding etc. I doubt that old untgz will handle it reliably. There should be a port of star available that should be a better solution.

Quote
Please note that I don't have eCS 2.x with all of its UNIX tools, nor a GCC environment (will cause disk full errors), nor have I ever intentionally used the GZIP of eCS 1.x. So remarks w.r.t the option and cpio are, to say the least, interesting. I almost want to ask why cpio is usually used instead of a (tape-unrelated?) tar, but perhaps that's too off-topic.
The gzip ports for OS/2 are outdated and should only be used on HPFS volumes to avoid problems. Old tar has a pathname length limitation, but that's only one reason for cpio. Newer tar implementations like later GNU tar versions or star can do more of course. EAs and ACLs are another problem https://github.com/libarchive/libarchive/wiki/TarExtendedAttributes.

Code: [Select]
Archive:  fcrackzip-1.0
warning [fcrackzip-1.0]:  432128 extra bytes at beginning or within zipfile
  (attempting to process anyway)
[fcrackzip-1.0] TEXT1.TXT password:

It may be some Unix archive type, but it's a fact that fcrackzip-1.0 asks for a TEXT1.TXT password... :o
The archive is definitely not an "Unix archive type". You should better distingiush between archive and compression. In fact gzip is neither UNIX nor an archiver. The only "special" about the mentioned compressed file is the usage of gzip option "-n" for its creation. There's simply no UCT timestamp and no filename in the header.

Under UNIX usually cpio is used for archiving and compress or pack for the compression of it, that would result in *.cpio.Z or *.cpio.z filenames.

http://oldhome.schmorp.de/marc/data/fcrackzip-1.0.tar.gz seems to be protected by a password. A programmer's joke?

Neither tar nor gzip can use password protection. You're quite late for 1st of April.

Utilities / Re: PCL6 Printer driver
« on: April 05, 2017, 11:25:56 am »
Although non of the IBM drivers specifically mention PCL6 it does seem to fall back to PCL5 without too many problems.  A few more tests, mainly involving this printer working over the network, and we may have a goer.
LASERJET.DRV definitely supports PCL6 Enhanced (and also ColorSmart and ColorSmart II). Of course it's possible  to use PCL 3 drivers (HP LaserJet). So almost any old DOS application can play.

It's quite easy to download recent OS/2 printer drivers (hobbes etc.). Even version 30.800 has PCL6 support.

I don't know why so many complicated hacks and workarounds came up here, which simply will not solve the original problem. To keep it simple:
1. Better use the official GSview 4.9, which is not broken
2. Go the "Easy" route that I outlined earlier, to get an updated printer.ini/gvpm.ini
3. After all you can do the fine-tuning of the paths
For what reason step 3 should be done first?

206
So the only - shall we say - un-clear step is #4, as it literally translates to:

"4. Further - Catalog X:\user !!! - further...until the end"

...and try as hard as I did...I just couldn't make sense of it...hmmm....???

Anyways, I tried this, however the "Easy Configure" always ended up in a FAIL...and the GVPM.INI itself was never re-written.

Simply put "X:\usr" to the upper entry field (second dialogue) for "In which directory...". With X for your specific drive letter. No other modifications are required. The Easy configure routine will add "bin" to it internally. Thats crucial to get the device list in printer.ini rebuilt.

207
Rozwiązanie rosyjski:

1. Skopiuj plik z \usr\lib\gsdll2.dll do \usr\bin
2. Start programu GVPM.EXE
3. Wybierz z menu "Options" - "Easy Configure"
4. Dalej - Katalog X:\USR !!! - dalej ... do końca
5. Nowy plik o nazwie PRINTERS.INI została wygenerowana / i ewentualnie \OS2\GVPM.INI
6. Restart GVPM - Otwórz plik PDF - Druk - Lista urządzeń zawiera teraz ps2write

Powodzenia! Przepraszam za mój katastrofalnej języka polskiego.

It's quite possible that colour maps are totally broken the same way as generation of printer lists in the latest RPM packages. When installing gs-9.18 to naked system there's a directory "\usr\share\ghostscript\9.10\Resource\CMap" created from package poppler-data-0.4.7-1.oc00.noarch with some kind of links to required files. The directory "\usr\share\ghostscript\9.18\Resource\CMap" from gs-9.18 is empty.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: Renew use of OS/2

Where is the best place to purchase OS/2 Warp 3?
There are enough resellers that still have packages listed. Originally most of the Warp 3 products were withdrawn in 1999. But it should not be impossible nowadays.

If you could specify your Warp 3 product (and NLS version) I can look for a package. There have been a lot of different packages:
*Warp 3, Warp 3 with Win-OS/2 (both in Floppy and CD-ROM versions)
*Warp Connect, Warp Connect with Win OS/2
*Warp Server Version 4, Warp Server Advanced Version 4

Quote
What are the minimum hardware requirements?
For Warp 3 any IBM compatible PC with at least a 386 processor, 8 MB RAM, 3,5"-floppy, CD-ROM drive and Harddisk should be enough. The last supported mobile devices were IBM ThinkPad 770. So everything up to Pentium MMX or AMD K6 class machines will work without trouble.

Quote
Can Warp run in a Virtual Machine, like Parallels for Mac?
Yes, of course. But Parallels supported guest OS start with OS/2 Warp 4. The reason for this is the shipped audio device driver which is included in their ISO image of guest integration stuff. By applying later fixpaks to the base operating system it could be made possible under Warp 3. Not straightforward and time-consuming for the uninitiated.

With Warp 4 product everything is much more simple. And as Dave already noted, it allows to raise the base operating system level (4.50) comparable to Warp Server for e-business (without LVM and SMP features) by applying the latest available fixpaks. It should be possible to acquire a used Warp 4 package for $50-60.

I am wondering if anyone has a better memory than I.

Do we have a PCL6 printer driver in OS/2?  I have vague memories from way back in the days of Passport Advantage that there was such an item and my notes from that time are long gone.

Everything is in the LASERJET.DRV by choosing the right model - at least HP LaserJet 4100 imo.

Later versions were only available via PPA. But were also provided by some manufacturers support websites (e.g. Kyocera).

For Win-OS/2 additionally ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak_cur/winpclen.exe may be required.
