General Discussion / Re: Audio/Video Streaming for Events
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:12:23 pm »
Hi Boris

For example, I've been streaming a movie from my OS/2 desktop to my OS/2 laptop using VLC on both sides, without any apparent problem.

Can you give me some hints to how did you set up that to try it out?

Regards.

Control-S on the server machine and Control-N on the client one.

Well actually, it should be relatively easy to setup a plain HTTP media stream (or two -- one for each camera) on any operating system but OS/2.

Then it should be very easy to watch this stream on any operating system including OS/2.

Don't know about Ben, but when posting I frequently get a message about a time out and helpfully I'm left with an empty message box with the subject filled in.
At this point the only way to post is to press the back button which re-displays whatever I typed, shutdown SeaMonkey (I have session restore enabled so the posting box is still populated on restart) and reboot. And yes the hi-res timer is turned off. Very irritating and if I didn't know the trick of going back, it would really be irritating.
Next time it happens I'll get a screenshot.

Never had that.

Jun Sawataishi web site, http://homepage1.nifty.com/jsawa/os2/index-e.htm including RPMs to break things :) I notice that his implementation used RPMDRV so as not to screw up ports that use UNIXOOT, one of my main complaints about the new YUM/RPM.

Sweet! Another unix-like env with its special settings and incompatible software builds. No, thanks.

You can also try explicitly specifing the locations of /usr and /var using kLIBC pathrewriters, cuz sh, for example, treats /@unixroot/usr as %UNIXROOT%\usr, but /usr as \usr. However, bash, it seems, is very broken, and doesn't understand /@unixroot/ at all...

Out of curiosity, where you using a UPS?

I am back up. The hard drive survived. I was not using a UPS. It was on a surge suppressor. Thanls

Surge Suppressors are a complete waste of money. 100% of the time the surge is through the system with damage done, before the suppressor even kicks in. Essentially they are just expensive extension cords that give the illusion of protection. I deter clients from using them whenever the opportunity presents itself.

There are standalone surge protectors. If you are talking about those that are built in power strips, then I agree to you.

becuase realized that arguing here makes completely no sense.

I support Martin's point of view.
Honestly your arguing is useful since it got us considering alternative kernels such as reactos which actually makes a lot of sense.
So if you have some thoughts feel free to share :)

Touché.

I've written quite a lot of text, but then deleted it (here you may thank me you don't need to read me), becuase realized that arguing here makes completely no sense.

Well, let me share my opinion about Linux/2: please, no.

the workplaceshell with all its features, SOM included, the sources of which are now available for both software (yes, even the wps, see hobbes!)

The source code of WPS is not available, and has never leaked.

Martin, I remember seeing an expanded dir of the ecs directory and it looked as if it was trying to emulate the os2 directory.  If that is the case why not move everything in it to the os2 directory as this eliminates one more directory.

This is actually easily reachable by using original OS/2, non-eCS distribution.

I would also think it would be a very good idea to move the /home, /programs, /usr, /var to another partition.  Doing so will reduce the size of the boot partition considerably and gets away from the windows idea of 'everything on the root partition', although I shouldn't complain as it helps our cash flow when we have to clean up the problems it causes.

Yea of course, this is also of the user's business, because it's not hard to do so at all: UNIXROOT and HOME may be set to point to different location.

It is also, by the way, possible to move the hidden Nowhere directory.

If an app requests a piece of high shared memory, and that arena is full, the kernel allocates the memory in the low shared one.

I thought we were initially talking about low shared. Well, the amount of high shared memory can be increased by increasing the VAL, as well as the high private. I know people running with VAL=3GiB successfully.

Due to x86, you cannot overcome the limit of the high/low shared memory unfortunately, but each process has got its own private arena, and if you need more memory, spawn more processes (in theory).

This issue has been solved by a tool called highmem (a derivative of January June's above512 made by Paperino), and it is safe to use it since kernel version 14.106_SMP.

Tho not all DLLs can be marked as "loadable above 512", but the majority of them.
The issue is not 'solved' and never will be I fear.
The solution is very simple: don't allocate low shared or private memory when high shared or private memory may be used.

Additionally we do have this very bad shared mem problem on our platform. So we have to reuse (share) dlls as much as possible.

For example, I have got all my qt4* DLLs loaded high, and I'm having no problem with this.
