Internet / Re: Firefox for eCS (OS/2) 24.8.1 Beta2 using very high CPU.
« on: September 30, 2014, 10:52:47 pm »
Hello,

both my AMD Phenom Quad Core computer and my Sony Vaio Intel i3 reboot like that.
Everything goes black instantly and then BIOS info show up as it reboot.
It happen with JAVA applications such as JDownloader as well.

Does it do a 'clean' reboot, like CAD does, i.e. the filesystem is clean on reboot like here?
I can replicate the reboot with apps such as ae.exe, newview.exe and I think tcpconfig.  These were created with Sybyl or WDSybyl (tcpconfig was with the latter but I am not sure if I had it reboot or just hang the system hard which I have had the previous two do as well).  I mostly see it with ae.exe and it started some years ago (maybe when I started using the SMP kernel).  I tried cleaning the fans, changing memory sticks, etc.  Finally I swapped the HDD into another machine and it still had the problem.  Later I put a clean eCS installation on the new machine with a new HDD and still had the problem.  The other day I put a clean installation on yet another machine and and had the problem on it as well.  I opened a ticket some months ago now.  I may be able to open ae.exe 30 times with no problem or it may reboot two launches in a row.  newview I have less problems with but then I don't launch it very often so it may be just as often.

Utilities / Re: Convert INF to PDF

If you have HTML, why not use it instead of PDF?  I personally would have HTML on the web and the INF for download.

Applications / Re: Regina REXX vs. OS/2 REXX
« on: September 29, 2014, 07:32:13 pm »
Regina REXX is a Classic REXX not Object REXX... I can't speak to the compatibility nor if it has the integration that it has.  If Open Object REXX were ported and replaced Object REXX then Regina REXX might be able to be used in place of Classic REXX.

Hardware / Re: eCS and 3 inch CD drives?
« on: September 26, 2014, 09:22:01 pm »
If these are the disks I am thinking of, they fit in the regular CD/DVD player.  I only ever had one of them many years ago but it read like any other CD but was just smaller.  In fact, if you look at a CD bay when it is out, there is often a smaller circular area that it would fit at.

Applications / Re: Audacity with Odin? Other usable Audio wav (mp3) Editor?
« on: September 25, 2014, 08:40:25 pm »
I believe there may have been reports of some version working with Odin many years ago but I don't have any idea what version, nor what version of Odin they were using at the time.
I find AVxCAT to be very useful.  It is a gui that wraps ffmpeg and several other tools.

Storage / Re: exFAT
« on: September 19, 2014, 07:52:16 pm »
The rumour I heard was that the OS/2 version of Object Rexx had been forked long before and that was the reason it was not included with the open source version.
I think they had been forked long before and the OS/2 portion was owned by a different IBM group who would not release it.  Back when all that was happening we had some REXXLA members attending Warpstock that were at least tangentially involved with the process.

What it will be great as a start is to have the eCS-OS2 implementation of JFS-boot complete open sourced. I asked that once to Mensys and they told me that the source code of it was provided in part by IBM, so they can not release it, which it seems odd since IBM released JFS as open source to be included on Linux, but who knows.
IBM did the same thing with Object REXX when they released it... they did not release the OS/2 code even though REXXLA tried to get them to do so at the time.

General Discussion / Re: Hobbes version handling
« on: September 10, 2014, 03:12:40 am »
Hi All

It used to be that hobbes required lowercase filenames but that was years ago.

Try searching for USBcfg on hobbes just to show that case is not an issue.

Having just tried the above search myself I see that the most recent release USBcfg082 (both .zip and .wpi versions) have gone missing - hobbes reports "No files found" when searching for USBcfg082.

I guess the hobbes administrator may have changed things again so that lowercase is now required but I doubt it. I suspect simple cockups by the current administrator to be more likely.

I have emailed the admin to ask what has happened to the USBcfg082 files and hope to get a reply.

In the meantime I guess I should re-upload the USBcfg082 files - and try to keep tabs on what happens to them.

Regards

Pete
USBcfg082, Usbcfg082, or usbcfg082 would be fine but the case of the zip and txt have to match as well as the case in the filename field in the text.  It is being run on *nix based system where the filesystem is case sensitive and the scripts used to move everything therefore will see a Zip as different from ZIP or zip for instance.  As I understand it, the scripts will check to make sure there is a txt file to match the archive file... if not then it deletes.  Assuming that is fine, it processes the txt file and looks at the filename and processes according to the information found in it.  If the case doesn't match there then it won't find the archive file to process and then it would be deleted.

Programming / Re: Simple C Programming Editor and File Manager for eCS ?
« on: September 10, 2014, 03:06:10 am »
Filestar is a well thought of File Manager:  http://jaread.net/software/
FM/2 is also well thought of:  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/os2/util/browser
That link has many file managers, some mention being Norton Commander clones (those are all older but should work as well now as they ever did but I don't anything about them).
Larsen commander is the one I like but use the above two as well: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/shell/lcmd1.07.02.zip

For editors:
Flex edit at the same site as Filestar, I haven't much experience with it.
QT based editors probably the best chance of having tabs (there are some I know have tabs but don't have line numbers)
http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/wiki/QT4%20Office
http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/wiki/QT4%20Development
I used to always use ae.exe (likely what you are using as e.exe) as it had line numbers (have to turn off wrap) but it didn't have a goto line number.  I only stopped due to it rebooting my system, have several systems it is doing that on but haven't figured out why.
I now use NEPMD but it uses the Enhanced Editor as a base so probably still wouldn't work for you but in case it would change something so that it works:
http://trac.netlabs.org/nepmd
It doesn't have tabs but does have line numbers and can jump to line numbers.
efte that Dave mentioned I have used and it works well but haven't ever looked for jumping to a specific line number.

uhm.. "HTMLWizard_src_1-60.ZIP " is also gone. I'm uploading it again.

Regards
As an example about the case sensitivity:
HTMLWizard_src_1-60.zip
HTMLWizard_src_1-60.txt
Archive Filename: HTMLWizard_src_1-60.ZIP

I believe even the ZIP vs zip will cause this to be deleted again.

Hihi

I also upload some files to Hobbes, but it seems they disappeared also ??
Did you end up loading the same file with two version numbers with the second marked to replace the first?  If so then yes.
Otherwise, one thing that it could be is that the file system on hobbes is case sensitive.  If you had even a different case in the txt file from the way it was uploaded or if the case of the txt file differed from the uploaded file then it would also be deleted.

General Discussion / Hobbes version handling
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:12:55 pm »
I have seen some posts on this, so when I saw iniser had version 2.4 and 2.5 in the incoming I sent an email to the hobbes archiver address and this was the response:
If the file is replacing a file that is still in incoming, it will be deleted. You can only replace files that have already been handled.
Please re-upload the final version and I will push it through incoming.

So, if anyone uploads a file and then before the previous one is processed, wants to replace it with a newer one then either they need to wait till the first is processed, not mark to replace the previous version, or if possible rename the previous to add delete.me and not mark it to be replaced or it will be deleted as the 2.4 and 2.5 versions of iniser were.  I forwarded that exchange to Peter to make him aware the files were both deleted.

General Discussion / Re: Hobbes and Libraries.
« on: September 04, 2014, 05:47:26 pm »
Maybe I have a misconception. I define a  "Library" like both, the DLLs (Binaries) required to run applications and the tools (docs, source code samples) that helps developers to create applications easily with a set of pre-created and shared functions.
The DLLs are typically (but as you've probably seen not consistently) called runtimes rather than libraries.  Libraries are more typically the files used to build software and a runtime DLL may be required for applications built with them (though they can be built in statically and require a DLL).
I should also mention that not all DLLs are runtimes by this definition.

set PROCESSES...
From my tests I saw PROCESSES was always set to the value of THREADS+1. With current THREADS=512 Theseus says QSV_MAXPROCESSES = 513.
I have:
THREADS = 512
PROCESSES = 256
and Theseus shows QSV_MAXPROCESSES = 256
here.

GCC 4.9.0 is buggy as hell along with having enough changes that much code no longer compiles. And this before any weaknesses that may appear in porting to OS/2. Many are waiting for 4.9.1 or staying with previous version. At least that's the hearsay I've heard.
Personally I find Pauls build of 4.4.6 to be the most stable
For all that...  GCC may not necessarily be at issue.  The crash is in make.  Which make is being used? Or from whence did it come?
