Setup & Installation / Re: Dual boot OS/2 and Linux
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:22:36 pm »
I haven't done that for many years since I install Linux on more modern machines where OS/2 would have problems with.

Use DFSee to create all partitions. Don't let Linux do that. If you are used to DFSee's menu, then it should be possible to "fix" the partition infos on the disks as preparation for the OS/2 installation. Note that eCS contains the DFSee backend to do that automatically.

I remember that you better use AiRboot in the MBR than Grub. (In most cases it's also possible to use the last IBM BootManager installed to a primary partition, preferably either at the start or the end of the disk, but AiRboot is recommended.)

AFAIR you have to install Grub then in the Linux boot volume. For that you have to use its advanced installation since many current Linux versions install Grub in the MBR in their default installation.

AFAIR the Ubuntu Wiki has valuable info about the coexistence, including file exchange via JFS.

The current JFS version 1.09.06 works well for me - and apparently for many others.

Just always try the newest drivers from AN first. As I wrote before, eCS 2.2 beta 2 plus the newest AN drivers simplify probably all your problems.

3) Uniaud doesn't work properly on modern computers
What constitutes a "modern computer" in your opinion? Does it need to be a certain brand or chipset? Should UNIAUD work seamlessly on many chipsets?
This time I have to confirm Eugene's statement. From what I heard and what I experienced myself with recent or almost recent sound chips, the support is near to null. Especially the widely spread Realtek on-board chips seem to be a no-go. I myself use supported but ancient PCI cards (Soundblaster Live, Cristal) to overcome that issue.

Watch the Warpstock Europe news amd the Arca Noae news. Actually, there is no recent news.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB

I was aware of unpack although not sure what the difference is between unpack and unpack2,
IIRC pack2 and unpack2 have higher compression and fully replace and include pack and unpack. pack and unpack are just available for compatibility.

If I want to install your drivers automatically I would need to replace the USB bundle in \OS2IMAGE\DISK_5 Not sure how to do that.
Use unpack2.exe and pack2.exe:
Code: [Select]
start view cmdref unpack2
start view toolsref unpack2
start view toolsref pack2
toolsref.inf and pack2.exe are in the Developer's Toolkit.

General Discussion / Re: Difference between OS/2 and eCS
« on: April 18, 2016, 01:16:32 am »
You really should better get eCS plus its Software Subscription to get access to an easily installable system on modern hardware: eCS 2.2 beta 2. The Arca Noae files provide just updates to that. (We're all hoping for a soon Blue Lion release.)

[...] youtube [...] stutters and so on. Just stops playing when it has to load next frame.
Confirmed. The future is webm (HTML 5) instead of swf.

I've tried the shumway add-on and it seems to work, with the exception of sound. AFAIR some of the tests on the referred page failed. There are several other add-ons for converting swf to webm on the fly. Search for html5, eventually together with swf on the Mozilla add-ons page.

Unfortunately all recent Mozilla ports don't support html5 audio, so that's no option for us yet. See the issues here and here.

Note that Bitwise Works declared that they won't develop the current Shockwave Flash plugin further.

Thanks Dave - and Andreas.

I tried to download the five parted files yesterday, but only the first part had the size of about 10 MB, the others were empty. Concatenation had failed, of course. It looks like the download of the single 54.2 MB has succeeded now.

Applications / Re: XWP Startup Folder - How to make it work?
« on: February 23, 2016, 01:21:23 am »
Seems to me that there is something very wrong with the XWP Startup Folder or I have something misconfigured.
No, it works well in general. I guess you have problems with your inis. I would try to clean them and reduce their size. That has helped me always in the past, when I had any problems with them.

Be prepared to restore older copies. The mechnism in DMT works well, beside the WPS archives, of course.

Have you tried the one from the ancient icc Mozilla project times?

Setup & Installation / Re: Setting the number of Desktop archives
« on: February 01, 2016, 11:24:48 pm »
Neil, in case you want just your inis being saved, Rich's DMT should be a more valuable tool for recovering than the standard WPS archiving. It recognizes ini corruption well, offers then a menu automatically and also on demand. It has worked for me all the times I had to use it. Since confirmed to work well, I don't use XWP's WPS archiving anymore. There are still situations when XWP warns about ini corruption but at the reboot it shows that it was false alarm, where DMT was always right.

Setup & Installation / Re: Problems with fresh yum install
« on: January 02, 2016, 06:08:08 pm »
Do you mean that you have the same error message as Michael? With:
Code: [Select]
[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/@unixroot/var/cache/yum/netlabs-rel/176ec
50a88496ad1c9eaa819ba3ea697524629651e879909c37e81ee82481c2a-primary.sqlite.bz2'

Most likely that is caused by outdated DLLs in \ecs\dll.

  • You could try Jan-Erik's dllCleanOut.cmd, posted here. Note that it renames doubled files immediately, without confirmation.
  • But probably that won't help in your case. Then follow Lewis' instructions.
