General Discussion / Re: Is TOR really anonymous?
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:00:23 pm »
I have installed it and I will test it out.

Since this is a TOR  thread, privacy is an issue.

This is what I found in the Lazarus FAQ;

Quote
Where does Lazarus keep the saved forms?

Lazarus saves all its form information inside an SQLite database ("lazarus.sqlite") located in your profile folder. The data is encrypted to protect your privacy.

Whether that is the whole of it or not, I cannot say for I have checked no further. Others can add to it if they discover more.

Should I loose data due to time-outs or whatever, then I will post the Lazarus results here... but that may take some time since -hopefully- this problem will not occur again.  ;)

Thanks for the pointer, Martin.

Oh, well.

I just spent an half hour researching and writing an educated reply.

OS/2 World/Firefox ate it, so that's the end of this thread for me.

Sorry, but that's way it sometimes goes.

Martin, I have "stayed logged in" checked, but that doesn't solve the problem.

That it did give the poster some more time on the old forum, but something has changed in this incarnation; you might want to check the "cookie settings" in the SMF forum server settings and/or in Joomla/Mambo settings. I have cleaned out and reset the cookies several times in Firefox; it changes nothing.

Other users here have complained of the same issue. Paul Smedley is aware of it too and related it to a known problem with PHP. It might not be fixable.

Usually I can pull my lost message out of the cache when this happens, but not this time and I cannot afford the time to rewrite it.

This post is just FYI.

General Discussion / Is TOR really anonymous?

It never ceases to amaze me that all of the things that "computer power users" believe to be their tools and to have been developed by their peers or by "hackers", (an old term for someone who puts computers together themselves), made in their basements or garages, turns out to have been manufactured by those whom they seek to hide from. Hehehe.

People are easily fooled primarily because they are mentally lazy.

TOR is private? Read this;

Quote
Who made the Deep Web?

The “Deep Web,” or Tor network, was actually originally funded by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, which developed the network with the hope that it could properly protect and encrypt government communications. From 2004 to 2005 it was supported by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but is now run by the Tor Project. To this day it is still largely funded by government organizations across the world, including the United States.

And I'll tell you something now; once a government agency, (DARPA, Military, University), makes something, they never loose control over it and if it is still in operation, never give it away. NEVER!

The Internet itself was made by ARPA the forerunner of DARPA.

You might as well call DARPA a military organization. Militaries are created to work against an enemy and for no other reason.

Since you are not the military, (and are no part of them), and you use it, (the Internet), what does that make you in relation to the military?

Pretty simple huh? Yet you cannot draw a conclusion from it. Because you cannot look at yourself in the light of day.

You should ask yourself "why can't I?" And you should force yourself to face the answer.

Anyway... just some thought stimulus for those who can still think.

Both sites for "Squid" and "Tor" contain a lot of text.

Hehehe. Yep! :)

How do I make them work?!

Another good question.

The only way that I can answer it is like this:

If I ever get the time I will write an article on it and submit it here or post it on one of my own websites and link it.

In fact, if I can find the time, I'll do the whole setup;
Squid->Privoxy->Tor

If I do not get the time then I will try and do a quick and dirty, simplified install and setup. I'll copy my config files and zip the whole works together. But, it will not be this month and it depends upon the level of interest.

Do you know what version of Firefox the Tor Browser Bundle uses? Also wasn't using a Firefox security hole how the FBI broke into the Silk Road?

Two excellent questions. Unfortunately I do not know the answer to either of them. The TOR Browser Bundle, however, is easy enough to get.

With regard to the Silk Road, that is not a topic that I would deal with, but, I do not believe that there is any browser that is secure; it is simply a question of how insecure one is versus another.

We OS/2 users, have no choice of course; nothing is current and only one is available to us.

I  mean, Firefox is funded mainly by Google who is a notorious privacy violator and is in the same league as MicroSoft... so to expect Firefox to be secure at all is to voice one's need to reanalyze their own, personal, concept of "secure"... of course MS owns the other browser of note so you are damned if you do and damned if you do not.

And there you will find another two organizations that are one masquerading as two in this regard, to give the illusion of competition in the browser market, where there is no competition at all. Look around you and do some research on the owners of Supermarket chains and Hardware chains et al, and you will see the same illusion. Once a technique is known and proven to work, they never change it. Thus, you can see it everywhere.

It is becoming more and more obvious and pretty soon, even the masses will pick on it without having to be spoonfed.

To move backwards, just look at the striking similarities to the way that both companies started out. What a joke!

Thanks for the port, Paul.

I now have FireFox->Squid->Privoxy->TOR up and working fine.

However, for FYI purposes... utilizing your TOR port alone and not using the TOR Browser Bundle, only gives partial security when compared to what the two combined would yield. Your port is definitely a step in the right direction!  :)

To demonstrate I give these examples;

Once TOR is setup, Googling via the FireFox search bar irritates the hell outta Google and it refuses to cooperate:

"Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network.
This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot."

What this demonstrates is that TOR is working... in this situation.

However, using the
Tor Check from their website yields this:

"Sorry. You are not using Tor.

Your IP address appears to be: (My correct IP Address removed)

If you are attempting to use a Tor client, please refer to the Tor website and specifically the instructions for configuring your Tor client."

However, following another of their tests from the same page, now utilizing the one at ShowMyIP, my IP Address shows as originating from Germany, (I am in Canada), and the next time it found me located in Poland... etc.

Now I'm not complaining mind you... I am merely writing that I find your port of sufficient personal benefit to have considered posting my findings on it... and followed up... my actions being in sync with my thoughts - something of a rarity in most people today, unfortunately, most people are hypocritical. I have digressed so now I will recess.
:D

PS
Just thought to add this addendum; searching through other search engines in the searchbar does not cause problems and using Google through the main page works fine.

Well, a cat has nine lives and in some respect, it has a connection to OS/2, but by a similar measurement it has an connection with the Phoenix; rebirth. Though eComstation is not a true rebirth of OS/2, rather, a rebranding with some upgrades or another stage of development.

With that in mind, a multi-staged rocket might work, one stage falling away and shown clearly, yet the rocket itself, still being on course, aiming high and yet, still vigorous!

Rockets also represent a level of technology.

The falling stage would have OS/2 marked on it but the rocket itself would have eComstation emblazoned on the side as it is still full of life and going on into the foreseeable future as it heads for the eComstation in the stars... like the Enterprise heading for a stardock or a spacestation.

The best way to clean a computer is neither with the vacuum nor the air gun.

The best way to clean a computer is to use both.

For example, if you are cleaning your Power Supply then hold the vacuum at the output fan and use the compressed air on the inside opening/fan of the PS.

After you are finished with that, then reverse the process putting the blower outside and the vacuum inside.

Changing the direction also loosens and removes any dust that might have gotten lodged somewhere. After you think you have it all get the odd angles with the blower and you'll be fine.

The biggest risk that you have in this process, is with getting particles into your eyes, so be sure to wear goggles. Glasses help but, are not enough; the particles will get around, behind and into your eyes.

Just FYI.

Stand erect! when you say that, boy!

 :o

Like the sperm whale that phoned up his girlfriend and asked "Can I cum over?"

 ::)

So... do sperm whales bite the tops off of submarines and suck out the seamen?

I don't get it?

 ???

It is a penetrating subject though it can be rather slippery to hold onto at times.

Limp jokes you say?

Well then, I guess it's all over.

General Discussion / Re: Baluga Whale as mascot
« on: November 27, 2013, 02:04:21 am »

I have read that the phoenix was brought about by flamingos that fly toward the middle of an acidic lake. When the baby flamingos come away from the middle of the lake to the shore, it seems that they are 'reborn by fire'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamingo

I did not know about the link between the phoenix and lucifer. I learned something new. Thanks.

No problem.

For every piece of real knowledge on this earth there is a nice, warm, cover story, prechewed and regurgitated, then given to the masses that will readily accept it.

The Phoenix is symbolic of Lucifer being thrown down from heaven to earth, (hell), and then he rises up from his own ashes in glorious flames, (which represents his spirit... being the most brilliant of all the angels), to take the place of God as ruler. Of course, he is thrown back down and it all begins again.

The Phoenix is allegory for Lucifer in the same way that Prometheus and Icarus are, all of whom are all regarded as the Light Bringer... another name for Lucifer.

If you are interested, look up the Wikipedia stories on them. Note how similar they are and compare them to the Fall of Lucifer. They are one and the same... and also note how Wikipedia leaves out the important bits.

Probably a bit more than you wanted to know, but there you are and now you have it!  ;)

Hehe.

Whales have a very high, favourable, marketing response.

If you want, big, passive, safe, secure, slow-moving, powerful force, nothing can deliver it so well! The fact that it is a beluga, only adds to this.

With the trend in todays OS's and marketing strategies in general, (Kijiji, Ubuntu, panda's and penguins), it would be perfectly in line.

Really, one needs to make a list of what they want the image to represent. That way submitters can focus their submissions.

For example, if you like the whale as a base, but require an air of sophistication, then adding a top hat and straight cane, capped at both ends would do this.

It is easily added and instantly recognizable by even the most simple of minds... which marketing must always target if mass coverage is to be effective.

This is why base symbolism is simple. Logos are merely a specified aspect of the same thing.

Some nice pictures there, Tommy. Really. I'll add them to my collection.

However... you might decide to reconsider it as a mascot since the Phoenix represents Lucifer.

 :o ???

Heheh.

Perhaps a bit more research should be considered. Though, like I said; "nice pictures"!

Martin, it would seem to me that it would be timely for someone who knows Chris Wohlgemuth personally to contact him and inquire.

I do not know Chris myself, but he has been a significant contributor to the OS/2 community in the past and maybe still is.

It would be hard to believe that he would keep such a thing from the OS/2 community now... but it is his work.

Getting his version of SC.exe would be a good, early step-forward on this. Maybe then, someone with the correct skills could pick it up and carry on with it.

Who knows?

How can this be done?

Is there something upon which to base a new SC.exe?

Or would a new one have to be developed totally from scratch?

Are there old sources in the Developer's Toolkit that can act as a guide for a new, open sourced version?

I'm not writing about using the original sources directly, but is there nothing that can be used just as a guide.
