Applications / OSS Project ideas for OS2VOICE
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:41:43 pm »
Hi

I recalled Roderick saying at Warpstock 2015 that OS2VOICE has some funds available and he was looking for some ideas for Open Source projects on the platform to sponsor.  Here it is a link to his presentation.

If Roderick is around maybe he can tell us if he is still looking for ideas

Community member are welcome to share any ideas of already existing open source software that can be good to port to OS/2 or any other OSS project that could be created for the platform. We are only providing ideas, OS2VOICE board is the one that has the final word and the conditions, but I think that it is good to share ideas.

So, what new open source projects will be interesting for the OS/2-eCS-BlueLion platform ?

Applications / LVM.DLL and IVM.DLL
« on: November 20, 2015, 10:39:30 pm »
Hi

While looking at eCS 2.1 I noticed these two files LVM.DLL and IVM.DLL

LVM.DLL used to be the library of the LVM functions. But on eCS 2.1 it seems that LVM.DLL is a forwarder to IVM.DLL, which also has the LVM functions.

Does anybody know the history of this LVM.DLL? did something got patches on the LVM.DLL forwarder to fix any problem on the original one?

Bldlevel on LVM.DLL shows

Code: [Select]
Signature:       @#eComStation Development Group:1.1#@##1## 20110111
     sigel::::::@@Forwarder for Logical Volume Manager
Vendor:          eComStation Development Group

Article Discussions / Article: What Good Is Native .NET On Power?
« on: November 19, 2015, 01:34:04 am »
This is not an OS/2 related article, but it mention it. Wrote by Timothy Prickett Morgan: http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh111615-story01.html

It says:

Quote
As IBM learned during the OS/2 Warp fiasco, where it was trying to emulate Windows inside of its own OS/2 operating system to have a larger addressable market, the emulated code was clunky and offered poor response time compared to the actual Windows, and IBM was always playing catch up with its support.

I can not decide myself to say if Windows 16bits is emulated in OS/2 or not. I always thought that Win16 run directly on OS/2 without the need of running a full instance of the Win16 OS. Maybe like Wine or Odin, which is not an emulator, but a clone of the libraries. ... or a clone of the libraries is also called an emulator? not sure.

Additionally it says " the emulated code was clunky and offered poor response time compared to the actual Windows"....maybe a Wikipedian will say... find a me a reference for saying that.

General Discussion / What to do with OS/2 Books?
« on: November 15, 2015, 03:51:33 am »
Hi

I had been discussing what should be done with OS/2 books when the owners want to get rid of them.
The discussion is still on-going but there are some options I want to share:

1) DO NOT donate your books to your local library. Before doing this discuss with your local library what are they going to do with those books. Right now there are a lot of library that do not want older books (80's - 90's), and when they grab old books they first try to sell them (for a very cheap price to students) and if they are not able to sell them they just recycle it.  So it is good to first talk to the library to know what do they do with old books before donating them.

2) Posting the request on the forum: Another good options is to post the books that you want to find a new home for on this OS2World forums. Sometimes there are users and developers that are interested on a specific book and some arrangement can be reached between the two sides.

3) The OpenLibrary of the Internet Archive. The OpenLibrary is an library that is on the web. They scan books and make it available on the site, and as far I can know it seems that do not have copyright issues because they only allow one person at a time to view the book online (You can not copy them, only borrow them). Check the OS/2 books that they have scanned.

The OpenLibrary also accepts books donation and they scan them to upload them to the online library. Check it out here.
So, I'm starting to think that it is a good idea to donate any OS/2 book that you want to get rid off to (but to be preserved) at:
Internet Archive
BOOK DONATIONS
300 Funston Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94118

The only issue is that they do not offer any timeframe on when the book is going to be scanned, but it will eventually get scanned, and what else can you expect for a free service. This is a lot better than getting the books recycled and loosing OS/2 knowledge.  Maybe an issue can be that the book owner needs to pay the shipping cost of it.

For the moment this looks like a good alternative, but I'm open for more ideas. What do you think?

Applications / XWorkplace Monster Revival ?
« on: November 13, 2015, 04:32:14 pm »
Hi

I always dream of the revival of the XWorkplace monster.

I remember that on the past there was a complain that "you cannot put everything on XWorkplace, it will turn it into an un-manageable project". XWorkplace contains several WPS Classes (SOM components) and several PM applications combined into a single package. That is good for the user, since it gets a lot in a single package, but it is a pain for developers that has to merge all the different components on a single package.

I really hope that XWorkplace revive, but not as it is right now, as a software that get bugfixed eventually, but as a software that gets new features and functionality. I am starting to think that XWorkplace should not only be a software, but the desktop experience that the OS/2-ECS-BlueLion user should have. Maybe it can be said that my idea is stop looking to XWorkplace as a single project but as a combination of software that creates the "XWorkplace Experience".

XWorkplace Experience Friend Applications
Since talking is cheap, I was wondering what would I like to combine to the "XWorkplace Experience":
- LSwitcher - GNU GPL - The Alt+Tab switcher that is currently and stand alone app, maybe some other like the bar, but I like the Alt+Tab switcher :)
- Animated Mouse Pointer - Apache - I think that the WPMouse class needs some love and try to give it more life, and also needs improvements to support newer pointer animation standards.
- Bubblepad - BSD – I personally think that "Launchpad" was the ancestry of the "Mac OS Dock". BubblePad is a good candidate to improve the launchpad.
- CandyFolders - GNU GPL - We never saw this project to evolve. It offered "transparent" windows, which was a nice thing for people that like to tune their WPS.
- Doodle Screen Saver - GNU GPL - It is our default screensaver and should be integrated to the "XWorkplace Experience".
- HotCorners - BSD 3 Clauses – To manage special actions when the mouse goes to the corners.

Notice that all this projects are compatible with the GNU GPL license that XWorkplace has.  And, by the way, I did some quick mapping of XWorkplace related apps on the

A change of Focus on XWorkplace WPS - Become the Open replacement of Workplace Shell
For what I know about WPS Classes (which are SOM Classes) they are cool because they can allow you to expand a functionality of a WPS Class without having its source code, this is why XWorkplace can improve the WPS functionality without IBM’s releasing the source code.
However, the issue remains, we do not have the source code of WPS and that is a risk. Right now, we have XWorkplace classes that are child from IBM’s Close Source WPS classes, so it still depends on close source. XWorkplace should also try to address that risk by slowly trying to take over the IBM’s WPS Classes and be a complete open source replace of them.

XWorkplace as Brand
If we stop seeing XWorkplace as a software and start looking it as an “experience”, we should think about turning into a brand, not a commercial brand, but as a name to organize the XWorkplace related components like:
-   XWorkplace Core (for the WPS classes)
-   XWorkplace Animouse (for Animated Mouse Pointer)
-   XWorkplace ScreenSaver
-   XWorkplace Hotcorners… etc

After that, it will not be a single big crazy project with a lot of code that is hard to manage, but maybe a group of components that are compiled and versioned separated, but belongs to a same “Experience”.

So, feedback?
I know that there are trolls that do not let you dream, or complain that “everything is impossible” without even evaluating any idea, or just replying sarcastic things. However, let’s put that aside and share what do you think it will be great to add/combine to the “XWorkplace Experience.”

- Do you have any app that you like on the WPS desktop?
- Do you have any screenshot of your Desktop that you want to share?
- Do you saw a good idea on other OSes desktops?
…just dream away.

Utilities / Accelerometer / Screen Orientation / Screen Resolution
« on: October 27, 2015, 09:25:41 pm »
Hi

This is just a topic of discussion, it is not mean to be an active development.

After the SNAP presentation at Warpstock I was talking with some of the people there about some personal opinions on why the request of screen resolution on the fly change was necessary.  There are latops like the Thinkpad Yoga that on Windows when you change it to Tablet mode and Tent mode, it recognize the position of the screen and Windows changes the orientation of the screen.

Of course, we discussed that it may not be a resolution change, since flipping the monitor does not mean that there is resolution change on the fly, it only inverts screen, but it also shows that another driver not related to video is required, that is the accelerometer of the laptop.  (Or maybe I'm wrong and it is not only the accelerometer driver the one that define the position of the laptop)

And other topic of conversation showed up, that the acceloremeter on Thinkpad Laptops is used to "pause" the HDD when it detects movement. (It is called Lenovo Airbag Protection now).

Here it is the Windows screenshot of that functionality.

But If my memory does not plays me a wrong trick, this is very familar and I think that I used to see the same utility on OS/2 for the Thinkpad 600, 770 and maybe other Thinkpads.

So I searched for the older Thinkpad Drivers / Utilities on some sites like:
http://tp.omgema.lt/download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/ddfm/600.html

I'm trying (under my own risk) the "Configuration utility for OS/2 - ThinkPad General" , just to check if I was right or wrong if that utility existed on OS/2 on the past, but the installer detects this is not a Thinkpad of that model and do not allows me to install it.

Do anybody can think on any trick to to install "Configuration utility for OS/2 - ThinkPad General" just to check it out? I don't think I can find a TP 600 or 770 to try it out.

Hardware / Trackpoint Lovers
« on: October 27, 2015, 05:47:14 pm »
I notice something at Warpstock.  The majority of users there really likes the Thinkpad Trackpoint.

While I notice that some Thinkpad users do not use the trackpoint at all, and only use the Touchpad (or trackpad), at Warpstock I saw two users requesting, "How do I disable the touchpad?".

The majority of OS/2-eCS users at Warpstock were using Thinkpad T40 or T60 (and its different types T43, T61, etc) and of course there is Neil that has the chance to experiment/sell other models like the X200 and the W600. But the common thing is that the OS/2-eCS users likes Thinkpad and likes the trackpoint too.

So, I guess I also found my support group for Trackpoint Lovers.

Events / Warpstock 2015 - Questions for the Speakers.
« on: October 14, 2015, 11:29:23 pm »
Hi

Just like the last year, I think it will be a good time to hear if anybody that will not be able to be at Warpstock this year has any question for the speakers.

Just remember that sessions for this year:
http://www.warpstock.org/staticpages/index.php?page=ws2015_sessions

That day I also hope to be connected on #netlabs IRC chat to see if there will be a live question from the audience.

My reading is that is not working.

Config 3 - VLC / eCS OS.
- Check on https://www.youtube.com/live and grab the URL of one live streaming.
- Open VLC and select "Media - Open Network Stream"  and put the YouTube Live URL that you grabbed.
Check if the video works.
My reading is that VLC is working with YouTube Live.

Please let me know if you have the same results that I had or any other issue.

Applications / Why Qt4 Lib uses REGISTRY.DLL?
« on: September 29, 2015, 09:27:17 pm »
Hi

I was checking on my experiments with OS/2 VMs that the Qt apps uses "Registry.DLL" file, otherwise the Qt apps will not run.

Even that I tried to document Registry.dll on the EDM/2 I still have my doubts of what it does and to which OS/2 component should be referred to. I put is as part of the Open32 component, but now I have my doubts.  I used to have this description on this file "Windows-like registry support. Used by Open32. ".

Any comments are welcome.

Setup & Installation / 1TB HDD and GUID Partiton Table
« on: September 23, 2015, 05:53:55 pm »
Hi.

I preferred to do a new thread since my case is a little bit different. I want to have dual boot Win10 and eCS 2.2.
Now I'm stuck on the GUID Partition Table (GPT) error for both disks (1TB and 16GB).

Here I post some screenshots of the eCS 2.2 Installer error and a Partition Mess I have in Windows.

There is not easy way out, right? Do I need to wipe everything, create partitions with eCS, and install eCS first and after that install Win10?

I also wonder (just wonder, I know it is hard to fix) which drivers should be updated or created to have "GPT Friendly" eCS.

General Discussion / OS/2 Google Trends ?
« on: September 19, 2015, 03:22:36 pm »
Hi.

I got  a warning about "OS/2" search on google raising this month.

It seems to be a consecuence of the Apple Watch OS 2 and some people are searching for it the wrong way.
