Setup & Installation / Re: Desktop restarting at midnight
« on: December 13, 2014, 08:30:20 pm »
Do you mean with 'restart desktop' restart WPS only or the whole system? If restart WPS I can not see how this can be related to some power disturbances. If you mean restart whole system and it is somehow related to the 175Hz control signal you describe than go and buy a new power supply unit as yours is badly broken. Even if this 175Hz signal has amplitude high as the normal voltage (which I doubt) every PSU even the low quality ones have to handle such situations without any disturbance on the secondary (the mobo) side. AFAIR 20ms power supply interruptions while full load on the secondary side have to be handled by the PSU too. Usually a few 100ms interruptions are handled as hardly no one runs the PSU at full load. Thinking of surge and burst tests a PSU has to withstand I do not want not believe this 175Hz signal can cause troubles even for very low quality PSUs. Your mobo and your drives do not have any chance to notify such problems with any but a badly broken PSU.

Btw. SQR (3) * 230V = 398V. Usually called 3 x 230V ~ / 400V system  ;-)

By "full network support," I assume this implies shared folders for OS/2 guests.
No, not for me. I want OS/2 to be the host and run Windoze for the few apps which I need as guest. When times come I've to switch the 'host' OS, probably I will not have much need for a virtualized OS/2 anymore. If OS/2 - eCS does not run natively on my hardware anymore I think it's finally over :-(

What I meant was usable performance for the guest running on OS/2 host speed wise (don't want to wait ten minutes to transfer 100MBs or so which I've to do regularly for backup reasons). Including Multicast packets to connect to my SMA converter which btw. works with the ancient Innotek port of Connectix VirtualPC, and Netbios which does show all files/folders not only part of them offered by host (works with VPC too). And with correct timing for the guest (I guess that's the problem) for the Card TAN generator used by my banking software inside guest Win (works with VPC too but not with VBOX).

Clipboard for OS/2 hosts?
Yes. F.i. it's way easier to copy/past IBAN from email (Seamonkey running on eCS) to the banking software running inside VBOX than doing this manually. Btw. VPC does still work but does have other drawbacks compared to VBOX.

Article Discussions / Re: [Arca Noae] So, what would you like to see next?
« on: November 26, 2014, 10:38:15 pm »
Sorry Martin, but as long as we do not even have manpower to fix things that are really broken, or make things happen currently not available (see your other wish lists) or compile open source stuff and bring them to a usable quality level, I don't want wast time on things that still work. And I definitely don't want to see Arca Noae to waste time on them. Give me video driver which do not hang system when playing video (fully SMP safe), wlan driver, shared mem fix, AOO without mem leak and sticky navigator window, killable java without window redraw problems, fix for sigfpe, up to date cmd window buffer, FAT32 with usable speed, VBOX, large floppy with USB devices, and and and.....

Your vision in replacing PM would need way more than all current available OS/2 developers even if you count that one which have the knowledge but decided to not support this platform anymore for various reasons. Visions are fine. But if they are so much above what can be handled in a realistic time frame they are counterproductive.

I know you don't want to hear this again so this will be my first and last post on this topic.

Hardware / Re: New X600's for SNAP users in the UK
« on: November 24, 2014, 12:23:03 pm »
Daniel - I think Matrox G550 is fully supported by SNAP but check the readme. Although at the time SNAP was developed probably only the PCI version was available. Until now a G550 with PCIe can be bought as new card. AFAIR someone reported the PCIe version works too with SNAP and OS/2 but slower compared to up to date cards. Basically it's the old G550 PCI version with an additional PCI/PCIe bridge.

OTOH my ATI X300 works including DOS/WinOS2. But hard get new especially with 2 DVI outputs.

- SNAP for integrated Intel video with Multihead (3 times 1920x1200 resolution)
- solving the shared mem problem
- new VBOX with clipboard and full network support
- fast Seamonkey (not slower than on other platforms) and where some (java)scripts do not bring down the whole browser
- AOO which does free all mem when closing and with fixed 'sticky window' ticket
- cmd.exe with more than 8k (more than 80x100 char buffer)
- fixed FPE (floating point exception (?) which crashes QT and other apps)
- WLAN adapter drivers
- up to date VisualSlickEdit

Ok enough for now. If I would spend another minute the list would probably 3 times as long :-)

Interested as the most advanced inf viewer is Docview which seems to be available for everything but OS/2
DocView is based on NewView which is only available for OS/2 :-)

« on: November 03, 2014, 09:13:49 am »
Thank you Dave. I'm very interested in Seamonkey.

Is there some improvement in speed compared to 2.14? AFAIR 2.14 is the version which is considerable slower than previous ones.

I've ilink v1.08 which was included with VACPP3.08, ilink v3.06 from VACP3.65 and ilink v5.0. Never heard of ilink v3.08.

I did not test eCS flash but what definitely does not work is ustream with my BlackBerry PlayBook. Ustream says flash is not up to date and do not let me see anything. But Adobe says it is. Needless to say that I trust Adobe more than ustream in that case.

Hardware / Re: Motherboard woes

I'm looking for a new board too. First thought it will be a MSI H87-G43 as my current MSI works well. But now I think I'll buy an Asus H87-PRO. Unfortunately it will take some weeks till I can say anything about eCS on it.

Hardware / Re: Compaq Armada 1750 [Laptop]

Doug, so next best option I see would be disconnecting that thing. Unfortunately this needs disassembling the hardware. Usually it is (was) quite easy with older Thinkpads but sorry no clue who easy it is with your new model.

Whoever invented touchpads should be compelled to use Windows Vista, for the rest of eternity.
Sounds to me like an adequate punishment :-)

I only wonder why it is not able to disable the touchpad in OS/2. No possibility to disable PS/2? Or is it attached via USB and are there no options for usbhid? I do not suffer from this problem as my T4x have the option to disable in BIOS so can not test myself.

Martin, will you discuss this

- will he allow developers like me to work on SNAP source code as Mensys has bought the rights to do so?
with Menso face to face. Maybe Mensys can transfer the SNAP license for source code to Lewis Arca Noae. As Mensys obviously does not and did not anything with the source code it seems Arca Noae can manage this topic better.

We really need better graphic support and extending SNAP seems to be the easiest way to get them.

Compaq cloned the IBM PC Bios (in contrary to other PC makers which more or less illegally copied it) and IBM could do nothing against it.

Questions to Menso de Jong -
- is there any update in the last 3/4 year which justify the money I spent for eCS Software Subscription?
- is there any update we can expect within the next 3 months?
- will he give me back my money as obviously there is no activity from Mensys in improving eCS since a year or so?
- will he allow developers like me to work on SNAP source code as Mensys has bought the rights to do so?
- will Mensys ask IBM to make available the 14.106 SMP debug kernel.
