Setup & Installation / Re: Re-organizaing OS/2-eCS Directories.
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:51:03 pm »
Martin, I'm sorry but I just don't understand what you are trying to do.

Moving those directories around id not going to save space so why bother?  The standard boot partition we use is less than 1 GB in size and that includes a few things we have added to the standard OS/2 install disk image ( cups, java, snap tools, utility and warpin ).

For us 'programs' is a different partition as is 'data'.  We chose this because it makes backups very easy and by having images of the various partitions in both their 'first installed' state and 'when something changes' after that.  Restoring after system or disk failure is usually less than 2 hours including replacing failed parts.

What you are trying to do has the appearance of rearranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic - may look nice but is useless in improving the OS.  The examples you give in 'Recommendation #8 – Directory and File Structure', make me wonder if you have ever looked in the 'windows' directory - it is a mess much worse that anything seen on OS/2 and any flavour of Linux isn't much better.  To follow the windows way and dump everything on the boot partition (I know win7 does create a hidden boot partition if you let it) is just asking for trouble, something IBM were careful to try and avoid when they designed OS/2.

My thoughts can be summed up as, 'if it is working then there is no need to fix it'.

You actually get youtube flash films to play?  Do you have a special version of flash player because most of the youtube offerings require at least version 12 and some now require version 14.

Setup & Installation / Re: Help ! How to: Installing MPlayer/2 !
« on: July 12, 2014, 02:08:41 am »
The drivers are the latest as confirmed from your post.  Although we have had this machine for over 18 months this was the first time we tried to use sound on it - and that was only because it was up and running when I decided to try your how to and I couldn't be bothered to go to my office.

I can't get sound out of VLC or a CD in the CD drive using WarpCD player so I will have to investigate further to find the problem.  I have a memory of having to set various IOs on another box a couple of years ago, copy it and then load it at every boot of that machine - maybe that is what is needed here.  Anyway that is for another time - after 2 in the morning here so I think it is time to call it a day.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Greggory,

Thought I would give this a try on my 4 core box - everything is OK except no sound output.

On checking, unimix does not show anything other than line playback and mic volume, yet systems sounds work.  Any ideas?

I really hope that XEU slaps me back in the face with a long term strategy for the platform, with community leaders collaborating in the forums, open source development and with better driver short term support.  I urge Mensys/XEU to do something and announce something, because it is waist of resources to discuss about them speculating.

Martin, I think you will be waiting a long time for any response from them.  I get the impression that they have absolutely no idea about what they are going to do with OS/2 or eCS.  I doubt they will continue to support it in any way - they don't have the OS/2 source code so that is out and I don't see them doing any support for multimac or any of the other efforts or we would have heard about it before now.

Jan, as far as I know the eCS product is OS/2 with addons and an improves installer.  I don't think that Mensys has access to the source code for any of the base OS/2 because if they had that should have their first priority to update.

Based on the above there is no reason why the product couldn't be split into its two parts, OS/2 and addons/installer.  In fact I think there would be a number of people interested in the addons/installer as a stand alone product.  Also, as I understand it, most of the addons are open source which only leaves the installer to be opened.

Yes, that does mean that a source of the base OS/2 would need to be found but that is not insurmountable - we manage to pick up licences when we need copies for our clients even if it does require a little detective work to find them.

Hi Joop,

The Mozilla foundation, in their wisdom, decided to change the way the Firefox 23 and up works with one of the things being how tabs work.  As far as I know there are two things that must be done to restore tabs to the old way.  One involves changing 'Browser.Tabs.OnTop' from true to false and the other is installing the 'Hide-Tab-Bar-With-One-Tab' addon.

I am not sure what is the problem with your passwords as I have no problems using passwords for the various sites I visit that require them to login.  The only thing I can think of is that I have never set/used a master password in any of the browsers.

Also I have not seen the 99.99% CPU usage, maybe because I have multi core processors here, but I have seen a process remain open when firefox is closed - in my case it was the addons not closing.

Klipp, you are not the only one having this type of problem, in fact http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/06/26/boffins_untangle_why_your_software_builds_fail/ it is a well known problem that world+dog are looking at.

I also have to say that I hope you are successful in your endeavour.

Storage / Re: DISKCACHE causes delays on JFS volumes
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:15:58 pm »
As far as I know DISKCACHE is only of use with FAT formatted drives so is useless with a JFS system.  Also it is not needed with floppy disks or anything formatted as FAT32.

Boris, we will have to agree to differ on that but in my 50+ years in IT and Engineering I have found that keeping it as simple as possible works better but YMMV.

1137
Sorry Martin, I was under the impression that you not only wanted to import the .be site but also to increase the amount of hardware that will run OS/2 eCS by getting information from the users of that equipment.

1138
Boris, not everyone is using their computer with the browser open all the time and it a lot easier to use a simple text editor to get your information down and checked first, especially if it need such things as the output of PCI.EXE, RMVIEW etc.

An HTML form might work for simple add in cards, USB adapters etc but howmany pages would you need to give full information about a motherboard?  Especially where you need to note the changes that need to be made to the BIOS to get it to boot, what order the HD controllers need to be in etc.

Your idea would work if all that was needed were responses like 'works', 'takes some time to set up', 'sound not working' or 'sound only works with xyz driver'.

Martin, a couple of observations from me wearing my engineers hat.

Contrary to what Eugene says ordinary people will contribute if you make it simple for them to do so.

Your average person is, generally, not into editing a Wiki page usually because they are not sure what is wanted.  There is a way to bypass that but it requires that whoever controls the Wiki does the actual editing based on e-mailed reports from users.

To do something like that it would require you to produce templates (something like the hobbes readme.template but in much greater detail) that people can download, fill in and e-mail back.  You would also need to provide some indication of the types of information you needed as well as how to obtain it if necessary (see the problem.txt provided with Dani's drivers).

I can say the above does work because I setup such a system at a large engineering plant so their service department a) knew what equipment had problems and b) also knew what replacement parts were most probably required (my consultant fees were paid for in the first 6 months of operation by reduced down time costs).

If you want to discuss in more detail e-mail me, my registered e-mail works.

Thanks Pete,

It does find the drives and tapes nut other than giving the drive temperature the remaining information does not look like any SMART info I am used to.
