Hardware / Re: List of OS/2 Tested/Reported Motherboards
« on: May 16, 2020, 10:28:00 pm »
Hi Martin,

I think the 'new' boards should be no more than 2 years old - since 2018 there has been a vast change in AMD based boards with the older ones dropping by the wayside rather rapidly.  Here it is almost impossible to get an AMD based board that is more than 2 years old unless you can find one at one of the discount stores or eBay.

Applications / Re: Cumulus weather software for OS/2
« on: May 16, 2020, 05:55:24 pm »
Hi David,

That (wcalcos2.zip) is not the interface to a weather station unit.  It is just a calculator/converter for typed in weather information (degree F to degree C, rain, mm or inch and so on).

Thanks anyway, I hope the other programs are there as well - it is just a matter of working out either the names or where they are.

Setup & Installation / Re: Installing Warp 3 issues
« on: May 16, 2020, 03:55:27 pm »
Hi Pete2,

There is an even better utility that I have used for years  EMT4PM (OS/2) and EMT4WIN (windows)  OS/2 version found at
http://dvalot.free.fr/OS2programs.html  I'm not sure about the win version as he has gone to win 8 and win 10 versions now.

It allows for the creation of disk images using either a floppy or a virtual floppy, it also checks the validity of disk images and when writing a floppy from an image it tests the floppy for problems, bad sectors etc.

OK, I dug out the disk images for first disk - install and disk 1 for my Warp connect.  The install disk is as supplied while the disk 1 is modified to a) update some files, and 2) clear out unwanted files for space and update config.sys.

Hi Sean,

You could be right there, I seem to remember the last version of the UPS control software they sent me came with a note that it didn't require registration.  Now the problem is where to find a copy of the weather station software for OS/2?

Hi Andreas,

On my running system I get

[C:\]mem
7,906 MB  (3,311 MB accessible to system)

but I do notice that there appears to be a different layout for memory compared to Intel boards.

Setup & Installation / Re: Installing Warp 3 issues
« on: May 15, 2020, 09:40:25 pm »
How are you doing the updates?  I have found using the right tools help a great deal.  Also you will need to download the dani driver from hobbes (it is an advanced version of the ibm disk driver).  You will then have to add it to the boot diskette and adjust the config.sys as necessary.

Unfortunately I don't have the Warp 3 version you are using (I have 3 connect) otherwise I would send you the disk images that you could use to make the updated diskettes.  Also you must have 'copy from floppy=1' at the end of the config.sys otherwise the updates will not get copied to the hard disk.

Hi Koti,

I didn't know that there was an OS/2 version, I have only seen a windows and now the later linux version.  It is the main reason I have a win 7 box available, I am not impressed with the Linux 'display in a browser' display.  Also I have not been able to get the linux version to store the records from my Aercus WS2083 station.

If you do find a working OS/2 version let us know here.

Setup & Installation / Re: Airboot no longer works...
« on: May 12, 2020, 03:20:07 pm »
Hi Pete,

You hit the nail on the head with my case being about graphics.  The unit has an AMD Sempron 3850 APU with built in graphics driving a Samsung S24E650 monitor at 1290x1200.  Reported it to AN but no fix, no hardware like it I suspect.

Your problem should be fixed as it is much more serious.  I never had that problem at work even on the test machine (Asus M4A78LT-M LE Motherboard, 4 hard disks, 2 with operating systems (OS/2 v4.52 with a maintenance part plus ArcaOS when I retired, Linux Mint and Win7) all selected and booted using the old IBM boot manager with 'boot from USB enabled in the bios.  That machine is down in the garage gathering dust but I am loath to throw it out, it gave excellent service over the years and still has data on it that might be needed.

If BootManager can do it why not AirBoot?

Hi Pete,

You are lucky to get some response from Airboot.  For me, when I tried using it, all I got was a blank screen and I had to use a stop watch to time pressing keys.

In the end I dumped it, re-imaged the HD to ArcaOS only, pulled another PC out of retirement  and added it to the KVM switch and am back in business with a windows (shudder) machine to help sort out the problems friends seem to get into on the dark side.

Hi Rick,

It might be easier to just burn another DVD depending on what equipment you are trying to install on (a scratch towards the outer edge of a DVD shouldn't stop it working since the track starts from the centre).

And here am I being very concerned that this browser doesn't have anything like No Script available for use which makes it almost useless for ant real work.

I have it on one of my Linux boxes and am not very impressed with it.  Sorry.

Hi Dariusz,

Be glad you aren't in France, one of our largest computer parts supplier now only lists AM4 boards and Ryzen processors as well as their very expensive Intel offerings.

It might be time for you to consider moving up in the AMD world.  I seem to remember that you said your son has a Ryzen based machine - if so there is a simple test you can do - make a disk image of your working system, copy it to another disk then borrow the Ryzen box and swop its HD for your copy - power up and see what happens (you might need to edit the config.sys on the copy and add the odd driver.  That is how I went from my 3850 Sempron APU Mini ITX board to my Ryzen 3 2200G unit, in fact I still have the modified HD and use it to test how well ArcaOS runs on some of the Ryzen units I build for friends and other people.

Hi Dave,

To answer your last question, since I'm 80 I am supposed to stay at home here in France.  To go out we have to fill in a form each time stating name, date of birth, reason for being outside plus a few other things, you get a fine if you don't have one.  The last time I went out to get food I was advised to say I was only 70 on the form.  It is sheer stupidity as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you all for the information.

It would appear that successful recognition of USB 3 ports during boot is impossible without some radical reworking of the OS/2 boot procedure and, maybe, hacking of the os2krnl.

I will have to dig around in the motherboard hardware and bios firmware to see if I can get any more information (it will give me something to do during lockdown since at my age I'm not supposed to be outside).
