Hardware / USB 3
« on: May 07, 2020, 07:57:32 pm »
A question for those on the elite list of testers.

Does the USB 3 driver work at boot time?  I have a couple of KVM switches that work with my Linux boxes but will not work with any of the ArcaOS units with a USB 2 addin card although they will work as stand alone boxes.

A secondary question, can a usb mouse and keyboard work through one USB 3 port?  It works with a couple of my ITX boxes that have real USB 2 ports.

I had an Acer T180 running as my main computer for years before I built my own Ryzen unit to take over that role.

Ryzen base computer boards work well if you use a real USB 2 addin card although there are usually a couple of odd requirements, first they really need ArcaOS to run the SMP side of things and second, depending on the board layout they might need the hard disk to be imaged to start with.  I have built several Ryzen based units for friends and out of interest I used the hard disk with the base image on it to test them - one failed because I didn't have a spare USB 2 card available so no kb or mouse.  When/if we get USB 3.0 drivers it should be a different story.

Hi David,

I hope they are paying you for that time but you really have to worry when you start on 18 hour days - they are the killer.

It appears there is some conflict with DLLs which is why I have all the necessary DLLs in the openoffice directory and use libpath strict on starting it.

Hi David,

They do say on that site

If you use Apache Openoffice as well, be aware, that you need to install the icu-legacy package to have AOO still working (yum install icu-legacy).
which might be the answer people are looking for.

Hi Axel,

What is your motherboard?  I have had several AMD Sempron based boards up to the Sempron 3850 APU on an ASRock AM1H-ITX which is now my standby unit.

The only problems I have had are with the new AMD Ryzen based boards because they don't have real USB 2 ports and we don't have USB 3 drivers.

Hi roberto,

What processor are you using?  If it is an Intel unit it might help to turn off hyperthreading because using it is very unstable and can give the results you are seeing.

Hi Martin,

Rather than fight with the multiple adapters that this board has (HD audio, hdmi audio and some sort of generic audio) I just use a C-Media Unitek Y247A USB audio adapter with a bluetooth transmitter attached to allow me to use headphones.

The first 3 attachments should be self explanatory, the last (mix.txt) is the output from unimix.

Actually, I got that little util, pretty handy, although at some point in time it started crashing on several of the tabs, so things like : Modules, Mod Tree, Sharedmem cause a SYS3175 now.

Very strange, it works well on my Ryzen boxes.  It sounds as if you have something strange going on with your computer - it is almost as if you have a suspect memory stick, either speed or a chip going bad (I have seen memory problems when the memory speed isn't optimum for the processor and chipset).

Hi Dariusz,

I don't know if the attached will give what you want but they might give you ideas.

Hi Guillaume,

While I don't have that MSI board I do have an MSI A320M Pro-VD Plus using a Ryzen 3 2200G that runs ArcaOS with very few problems.

Lan works without problems
In my case video works VGA, DVI-D using the Panorama driver into a 28 inch 1920x1200 monitor. I have an ASUS board with HDMI whivk also works.
SATA also works, even for a DVD drive.

The BIG problem is the USB ports.  Despite what is marked as USB 2 they require the USB 3 driver which we don't have (USB2 uses a pass through of the USB 3 chipset) so a real USB 2 addin card is needed if you want to use anything USB, keyboard, mouse/trackball, USB stick, etc. (StarTech PEXUSB4DP works but only after the OS has booted therefore you can't boot from it).

You may find that you need a bit of ingenuity to get ArcaOS installed if you don't have a SATA DVD attached to the MB.

Any problems just ask.

Hi Carl,

To keep things straight, how did you install the sound driver if you installed it on a working system?  It should have been installed using minstall

Hi mauro,

If you are using an unmodified OS/2 v4.52 then you will need to use java11 that came with the install rather than openjdk6.  At least that is how it worked on my OS/2 v4.52 install.  I will check if I have the disk image of that install and see if anything shows up.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the editor selection, using EPM I can select mono font and get a well formatted display.

Hi mauro,

Attached is a screen grab of the LVMGUI program object on my computer check yours is the same and also check the lvmgui.cmd file just in case it has become garbled (you may need to adjust something to fit your setup).

Thanks Pete,  that will give me something to play with.
