Applications / File comparison editor wanted
« on: May 07, 2016, 01:53:40 pm »
I'm looking for an editor which can show two files side by side and highlight the differences between them.

Anyone know of anything like this?

Found a solution with an add-on called "Theme Font & Size Changer", lists the fonts available for OS/2-eCS, ie settings of your locale. Real estate returned to normal size, no sliders on the right ;-)

Where did you find this add-on?

I've only just got this latest version of Firefox working after struggling for several weeks and still finding my way around with it.

Pete,

Is there any chance of checking your disks for bad sectors? Not sure what you would use... maybe DFSee...

Could it be that the older JFS was unable to detect some errors whereas the new version is less forgiving and panics when there is a problem...

Just a thought...

I removed the DLL's I had in my 'c:\usr\lib' and proceeded to add those from the pkgs mentioned in the link, and....

it worked!

Seems I must have had an incompatible DLL in the libpath... although I did notice the mozsupport has been updated since I downloaded it initially, so maybe one of the newer DLL's made the difference.

Anyway It works now, so I'm happy about that.

Hi Andreas,

I'm aware of the problems of moving an installation from one drive to another because of all the embedded paths, that's why I wanted to switch to a different partition and because LVM lets you reassign drive letters, you can have the original drive letter on a different partition. And it worked a lot easier than I thought it would.

Amazingly, it worked and I've booted up on JFS partition with 300GB free disk space!

With a little luck you will be able to boot to a working Desktop from D: as a result.

It's C: that I want to boot from which is what I can do at the moment, except I want to switch drive letters so that what was Z: will  become C:.

I'll make the switch shortly and see how it goes. I may end up with an unusable system so could be gone for a while :).

Hello John. Nice to hear from you again. Have you checked that you have all the required dependencies? PMdll ( http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/pmdll-2.12.zip) is a good tool for this.

I have run chkdll32 on firefox.exe  and xul.dll and all the required dll's are available. There are no error msgs displayed. Firefox simply will not load. I'm obviously missing something fundamental since no one else seems to have this problem.

Am I unable to load the latest Firefox because DIVE  cannot be enabled?

I can run v31.8.0 without any problems.

Hi John

If I read it clearly you plan on

1] Copying your installation on drive C: to Z:
2] Changing the drive letter for C: to D:
3] Changing  the drive letter for Z: to C:

You will definitely be able to boot from the new C:

You may have some problems with D: related to Desktop location in the os2.ini file being set as C:\Desktop - I have seen some info about this somewhere but, Sorry, cannot spot it at the moment; guess you could try "googling"...

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

You understand me correctly. The main issue seems to be to run SYSINSTX because the boot sector is different between HPFS and JFS.

I'm initially concerned about booting up to a command prompt rather than worrying about the Desktop. However the os2.ini file should still be correct if it had C:\Desktop as the location of the Desktop because the JFS drive would be renamed as C:.

Setup & Installation / Moving an OS/2 installation from HPFS to JFS
« on: May 06, 2016, 09:39:36 am »
Can someone comment on this scenario in terms of whether it should work or not?

I have two disks, one of which I currently boot from, and the other I want to configure as my main disk - disk 2.

Disk 2 has two partitions plus space for a BM partition. Partition 1 is formatted HPFS and has OS/2 installed and is defined as C:. Partition 2 is formatted JFS and is defined as Z:.

If I copy everything from partition 1 to partition 2 and change drive letters C: -> D: and Z: -> C: should I expect to be able to boot from partition 2 if both are marked bootable in boot manager? (Assuming JFS support is included in config.sys)

Setup & Installation / Re: Installing OS/2 on 320GB disk

John.
You can't have two instances of BootManager on the same machine.
Use DFSee to remove the unwanted one and then install the new one where you want it.

Ivan,

Believe me, you can have two instances of BootManager on one machine,  and when you do it gets very confusing, especially when you have two bootable C drives.

I'm not saying that you can install BM on more than one disk, but if you are using two disks with BM installed on both then they will remain. I'm not sure how BM reacts if it finds another BM on the system.

Hi John

Maybe if you go through the steps you are taking in trying to create a partition/volume someone will spot the problem.

I am currently using two disks.

Disk 1 is a 60GB disk which has Boot Manager and two partitions, both of which have OS/2 installed, one of them being just a  minimal partition for recovery purposes.

Disk 2 is a 320GB disk where I want to install BM, but am unable to do so, although I have created a 7MB Primary partition at the start of the disk where I hope to put it.

Disk 2 is only bootable via BM on Disk 1, so the question is how to get BM on Disk 2.

Does anyone know of any guides for setting up a dual boot system with OS/2 and Linux or FreeBSD?
