2 ivan and Doug: Regarding the VBox speed, I see winxp guest is reasonably fast (I even thought, it flies for me). Also, as rklipp notes, we're working on VT-x/AMD-V support, and with it, it is even quicker. Regarding the Additions ISO, you just need to choose Devices->Attach the guest OS Additions ISO image, then agree to download it. It take some time to download it. Also, you can download it manually from (the link to Addition ISO is also on the VBox Netlabs page at, near the last release link).  And then you can put it in the VBox main directory. It should be called VBoxGuestAdditions.iso to be found. (Upd: It downloads it somewhere, but not to the program dir, and in the end the VM crashes. Need to fix that.)

PS: USB 2.0 and 3.0 is available only in commercial version (they require a commercial extpack to be installed, which is not available for OS/2, yet (maybe, in future)). USB 1.0 (OHCI) should work, but raw USB device passthrough is not ready, yet. But you can attach USB mouse or USB harddisk to a VM (you only need to add an USB controller to Storage section, and attach a .vdi to it).

PPS: Also, no need to disable sound, as it uses Null audio driver. So, guests will see the audio card, but the sound will be not output. It should not affect the performance.

2Dave Yeo: You need to specify the correct GCC function prototype in Watcom source header, with correct calling convention. GCC is mostly using __cdecl and Watcom expects  __watcall by default. So, you need to specify __cdecl explicitly in prototypes.

2Dave Yeo: It works just fine for me without idl20.dll. The VM is created and started successfully. I don't understood, what is this Guru Meditation about? What you did, exactly? Did you disabled VT-x first?

2pete: Seems so. There's a single "curl" package, but no "libcurl".

I am not sure, but maybe, M$ changed .vhd format, since that. Also, as far as I know, splitting .vhd's to 2GB chunks is an optional feature. OS/2 version of VPC splits them for HPFS compatibility only. But this is not required. VBox seems to not understand splitted .vhd's. It needs them in one piece. Also, I see a 3 GB .vhd in my VM images directory. I took it from OS/2 version of VPC, and I used it with VBox, it had understood it well, and resized to 3 GB successfully, IIRC.  Or, I used that 3 GB .vhd with qemu, not VBox -- don't remember.

2roberto: And? What this has to do with Watchcat? And what this has to do with VBox?

2Andreas Kohl: It depends on the OS in the VM. Some OS'es setup, like OS/2, don't depend on the host processor, but some of them do (WinXP installs a HAL and kernel based on current CPU). Knoppix (a Debian Linux live CD) is not independent of the current CPU too. I copied VM's with OS/2 and ReactOS between OS/2/Linux/WinXP without any problems.

2roberto: Why do you think it is incompatible with an USB drive? I have no problems with this. You are, obviously, wrong.

2Andi B: Yes, it is a known problem. There could be the guest window not refreshed if the selector window present. This is some GUI lags. For now, to prevent this, you could try starting the VM without a selector window:

VirtualBox.exe --startvm <VM name>

Panorama is irrelevant here. I have this with SNAP too.

2ivan, rklipp: yes, I see the notice not disappearing from the screen, but after some clicking on "do not show this again" the message does not any more appear on further boots. This is working for me, at least. Maybe, you need some more attempts.

2roberto: So, what's the result? VBox hanged? -- Try to kill it with watchcat. Did not understood about mouse notepad and changing the icon.

2ivan: curl is the CURL exe (http downloader). You need libcurl, not curl. I suspect, curl is not needed in this case. Please try to use the latest package -- the version is encoded in a zip name. Well, we'll probably correct the packages list to not include curl.

I run win7 with 768 MB of RAM set. You can try disabling different visual effects and disable Aqua and set it to use "Classic" theme only. Anyway, we haven't 3D acceleration support, so that is a waste of resources. So, I did like this. WinXP SP3 is optimal to run on OS/2 host, it almost "flies". I set the VM RAM size to be 512 MB. Didn't seen any critical errors. Maybe, you have VAL too little (I have VALIMIT=3072 on my machine with 3500 MB of RAM available and VALIMIT=2500 on a machine with 3000 MB of physical RAM available). Also, I was not able to set more than 1700 MB of RAM to a single VM. The limit of RAM usage by applications is about 2100 MB. If I try to set more, the VM just panics (Guru meditation). This is a result of lack of available address space (remember that OS/2 is a 32-bit OS and Shared memory occupies some space in virtual memory, so, less private memory available, and vice versa).

Yes, .vhd is VirtualPC disks and can be used with VPC.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the 'mouse pointer integration' notice bar that is at the top of the guest program window?  clicking on any of the icons on the right does nothing (the X and /) and if I try to click on a program icon under it it just fill up more screen space.

You can click on a "Do not show this message again" button at right of the message itself.

Is vbox supposed to support more than one processor core?  The test machine we built has a 2 core processor but I get an error if I try and use more that one core (most of our machines have 4 core processors as do our clients).

No, AFAIK, for using more than one processor, you need the hardware virtualization enabled, which is not supported on OS/2 host atm.

Is TAPOS2 part of VBOX? Who can fix it?

It is not the part of VBox. It was just allowed to use with VBox by GenMac author. TapOS2 support in VBox is now broken, not TapOS2 itself. It was removed from official VBox sources, for some reason, since some version, but I tried to return it back, with no success, yet. I did something wrong. Need to repair in next VBox builds.

2Dave Yeo: Just tried to remove idl20.dll from the LIBPATH -- VM creates and starts successfully without it. So, see no problems here.

2Dave Yeo: libidl seems to be only needed for VBox/XPCOM IDL compiler (xpidl.exe). It should be not needed to run VBox, only to build it.
